Great video as always @Jack! More and more recently, I have seen the true power of RX and see how the observable pattern is so powerful (Svelte stores). Can we please see a video on SingleSPA server-side rendering and possibly even see if we can integrate NextJS into SingleSPA’s ecosystem. If not, even a demo on the recommended SingleSPA SSR integration would be awesome 😀

At my current job I am creating a highly interactive map application that uses a native Javascript library (leaflet), so I needed the reactivity and interactivity that integrates well into React, as well as just plain Javascript. I searched for hours, finally discovered RxJS lately and I got to say I am loving it. Having streams of data, combining them and having the whole application react to that (not only the React, but the javascript map part as well) is life changing. The first time I created a complex stream I felt like a genius, everything is so readable and all interactions flow so well. Also being able to separate the business logic of your application and the actual React UI components feels great. React was intended to be a UI library, and now all my React components are only concerned about the UI, with all the complex logic being written outside of them. If you need complex interactions with data (inside and outside of React), RxJS is a life saver. Coming from Redux even with Redux Toolkit, I am crying at how happy I am switching to RxJS. No more endless one liner actions, no more selectors and dispatch slugs. You can make RxJS as easy as Jotai or as complex as you want it to be.

Rxjs is bundle heavy. It’s also better used if you have more help in unsubscribe. Like the pipe async in angular that auto unsubscribes As it is right now , i don’t see the combo being practically effective.

For example how to structure and implement the domain layer with immutable entities, use cases, the data layer such as repositories (here maybe a more OOP or imperative style), so to extract business logic from state management solutions such as xState for separation of concerns! Really like the simple explanation on how to implement rxjs in a React project. I am just a little bit curious on the why part tho. What sort of project would you recommend rxjs over any other state management library? I really like how this works, but it does make a project much harder to understand for developers who don’t have any rxjs experience. When would you choose rxjs over just regular context or any other state management library? Also another question, what were there any more advantages in exporting the observables in the context instead of just importing them as constants?

Gotcha. Yeah, this video was a question about how to do it, and not about why to do it. So I wanted to cover a lot of the methodology bases. As for the why, it really depends on the nature of how data is modeled in your system. If you have real-time data then RxJS would be a good fit for that. But if you are looking to just do shared global data there are a lot of other simpler options for that, for example, recoil or jotai, would be good substitutes and would be a lot simpler. In fact, you could do the whole thing in custom hook/context combination since the entire tree needs to re-render on any state change anyway.

I would love to see RxJs used in combination with React-Query. You could demonstrate an example combining and filtering content feeds from an API. Or using RSS feeds from news sites that update very frequently so we can observe changes in the resulting feed live.

You don't need react-query if you use rxjs. IMO react query is a lightweight version of rxjs + useState

I can confirm this is a wildly powerful technique. I looked at useQuery and useMutation, they are just setting up subscribers that properly update react or force update. so i converted this logic into rxjs with subscriber.next etc, just replicating when react would update and trying to get same sequence of events. its amazing, i made it so that query options are passed in as stream, same with mutation observer. if the options change, the observer does not get thrown away, it is its own observable logic so i keep that around and just let it emit on changes. i can observe the state changes of a whole bunch of related API's and do derivations or side effects from them and its simplified logic like optimistic updating to be way easier. I set up an optimistic updating stream that uses scan to maintain an online reducer for all the api events that would change the entity being updated/read/created from a CRUD-api then you subscribe to that stream and there is your reduced state from side effects, no need for a global store or emitting event to represent the value somewhere else

I am always looking to use reactive programming, but I don't often use Rx to do that. Most often I'm doing reactive React hooks using the basic hooks (useState, useReducer, useEffect, useMemo and useCallback) with the dependency arrays.

It is. And hooks does the reactive state management as well, if you get the hooks right. But if you need some global state (e.g. a shared shopping cart, or a count of pending chat messages), this is actually a pretty nice solve for that.

Having gone through this exercise my general sense is that RxJS is an event based state management system. From what I understand about React however, already is reactive in nature, and has its own state management system via React hooks. Is there any specific advantages that RxJS has over React hooks?

The RxJS subjects can be global. Which you can kind of do with context, but even then it's not global to non-React sources. But there are a bunch of different ways to do simple global reactive state (Recoil, Jotai, react-hooks-global-state, etc.)

Great question. There is GraphQL Code Generator (www.graphql-code-generator.com/) which looks pretty good, and there is also the Apollo code generator, which if you are doing the Apollo thing, would be my preferred first go-to. Personally I would start with Apollo and URQL and then see what "global" state they did not manage, and then figure out how to manage that remaining state. If it was something like identity and auth tokens I'd just use context. If it was something larger then I would use something like zustand or xstate.

@@nepalcodetv6298 That's just my take. :) The move to the Flux model was a push towards singleton state (i.e. "local state is evil"). Then hooks pushed us back the other way; "local state is ok/preferred." Now, IMHO, the trend is a combination of local state right where you need it, and a smaller set of shared globals. And in that world the big infrastructure of large scale global state management doesn't pay for itself. Why do I need something like Redux Toolkit, or Sagas, if all I'm sharing is user identity and the content of their shopping cart? (Just an example.) I can get by with something much smaller, e.g. valtio, zustand, recoil/jotai, shared state hooks, etc.

There are some environments that support it: kangax.github.io/compat-table/es6/ The issue appears to be that supporting it actually slows down none tail recursion code. So it's a chicken and egg problem, you have to get folks to write for tail recursion so the can us the feature but you have to do it while it's not supported, then enable, it, blah blah blah. Honestly, just another reason why JS is not a true FP language, and no FP language built on top of JS will be a true FP language.

I'm maintaining a large legacy codebase at my job with react and rxjs and my god the code stinks. Every single logic is deeply coupled and nested with those rxjs apis, I had no idea whats was going on. Watching this tutorial I could understand what most of the main functions do, its going to help me a lot. Thanks Jack! I'm not sure I understand the different between RxJS with React vs React with RxJS, is there something that covers the "philosophy of states" that I can look at? Basically this is doing what every state manager does with React. React components register listeners on the state, the state changes, that triggers the listeners, then listeners trigger a re-ender of the components. The state in this case just happens to be managed by RxJS.

I think a little bit more and what happens is that is so common to almost always see the useState and useEffect hooks, so I felt that removing them is like removing a core functionality, but as you mentioned React is about re-rendering when there's changes. Also, I think a reason people like React is because all the logic is in one file and removing the logic part of the fetch requests makes it more abstract and harder to understand (that's for me 😅), but it looks cleanner and faster to read. Is the first time I see how is use RxJS with React, and I felt unsure if use this state manager or not, I guess only practicing it I would make a decision. 🙌

You have used {...spread}. You told us it is performance killer in another video. you should use p.power = ... return p;

It's not always a performance killer. It's fine in this case. As it is with a map. Because you are creating a new object for every object in the array. The problem with spread in a reduce context is when you use it to build new versions of continuously growing object or array.

It maps an inputted value of type T to a value of type V. If you have an Employee class and you called .map(employee -> employee.getSalary()), it would transform each element using that function and create a new stream of just their salaries, which might be an integer type.

Rx js is great until you have to read it and understand it again in a year. Also good luck to the poor devs who inherit it. Lots of tools that manage things in a different way and would argue should only be used where absolutely nothing else does the job.
