I want to hear your comments, and I also want, and want you, to be able to hear everything said by some of these Hall of Famers and other greats. Maybe you might consider pausing when you comment, and then rewinding just a few seconds before the pause for continuity before continuing to play the video? Either way, thanks for the reaction-- I really enjoyed it, and hope this means you're now intrigued, and will be going down the Bird rabbit hole. If so, I would love to see your reaction to the great vid of the greats talking about his infamous trash talking (I can't remember the name of the best of those vids, but I'm sure some other commenter will; Dominique talks about the first time he played v. Bird as a rookie, and it's hilarious), and "Larry Bird, Greatest Passer..." (again, I can't recall the exact title, but this will be enough to get you to it). If you do choose to react to it, make sure to get the "re-edit with additional footage" one. Also really interesting is "Five Times Larry Bird Was Injured and Refused to Quit," which will shock you-- his toughness was unbelievable, and this video has some really interesting facts that will blow your mind. Here's a hint/taste: he NEVER took pain meds, according to Parrish and others...not even an aspirin; when they sliced his infected foot open, he nixed the pain meds the doc offered, and asked for a beer instead. And that Pacers game he returned to to win? No goggles, no shot, no pain meds...he just went in and took over with (in case you didn't catch it) a fractured orbital bone. He also had a concussion and was seeing double. He said he just picked one of the two baskets he was seeing and aimed for it. I think I read, too, that the doc had told him he was out of that game for good, so he waited until the doc's back was turned and ran back in on the sly. Thanks again for the reaction-- I subbed and hit the notification button to show my appreciation (and, okay, also in hopes of seeing you react as you learn more about Bird and get more and more surprised...maybe even amazed).

He was drafted in the 1978 draft but played his senior year of college before signing with the Celtics in June of 1979 shortly before the 1979 draft. 1979-80 was his rookie season. Bird retired in August 1992 just after the Olympics (1992 Dream Team) His retirement ceremony was held in February 1993. The Boston Garden was sold out for the event. There was no game that night.
@leahmollytheblindcatnordee358611 күн бұрын
He led the Celtics to 3 championships. The one he came back in (with the fractured cheek bone, concussion and double vision) is another one of the times he brought the team back from losing to winning the game and it was near the end of his career. He was hard to guard because he was just as dangerous passing the ball as shooting it. He played 13 seasons for the Celtics, but 1 of the years he missed all but 6 games due to season ending Achilles tendon surgeries on both feet. Came back the next year and averaged 24.3Pts, 9.5TRb, 7.5Ast and 1.4 Stl. That one where the other bench was celebrating his shots was his 60 point game, but it isn't what he called his best game. In that, if you were to ask the opposing team, they said he was everywhere, rebounding, passing, stealing, reading the plays and of course shooting. Small suggestion that will gain you viewers and make it easier for you. When you are thinking of making a long comment, especially during the talking part of the video. Pause it, comment and then back up 5 seconds to continue. It keeps the continuity of the video and makes people happy. We don't mind the pauses, or at least most don't. We love Bird. I know you have done one of the trash talking ones, but his greatest passes, the re-edit one, his ones where he is injured, but still plays and his play off games with the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan are good.

Magic and Larry were both super competitive and had battled each other both in college and the pros and did not like each other initially. Then they filmed a Converse commercial in Larry's hometown. Magic was not happy about having to go there but it was in the contract. At lunch, Magic was planning to go to his trailer, but Larry invited him home for lunch. Bird's mom had prepared a nice home cooked meal, and told Magic that he was her favorite player. They go to know each other as people rather than rivals and a friendship was born that would last the rest of their careers and beyond.

Just a bit of NBA history...The Celtics' championship last season (2024) game them a total of 18 which is one more than the Lakers who have 17 total. The majority of the Celtics' championships came between 1957 and 1969 when they had Bill Russell. Russell played for 13 seasons and won ELEVEN championships including 8 in a row. 7 of those championships came against the Lakers. For the ten seasons from 1980 (the year Bird and Magic came into the league) through 1989 either the Celtics or the Lakers (or both) were in the NBA Finals.

They always say he played thirteen seasons, but he only played six games in the 88-89 season before double achilles surgery and a second surgery on his back, which he reinjured. He initially broke his back in 1985. So, from 1985 through 1992, that's what he played through. That and finishing two games with broken eye sockets, a playoff series with a broken hand and a fractured cheekbone and a concussion. Oh, and five games with double vision and averaged 28 points per game during that stretch. Durable? He was the toughest player in NBA history. There is no debate.

Different sport, different continent, very same story. The most crazy players, games, atmosphere. It was On-On. Now they go face to face,spitting bs. Nothing more. Also in European football. As a kid, I saw a defender play 90 minutes, with 2 broken toes, for months. In football. John de Wolf. The strange thing is that the NBA had Magic Johnson and Larry Bird both listed at 6'9". Look at any video of them standing together in Larry is a good 2 inches taller than Magic. So either Larry is 6'11" or Magic is 6'7". (The answer is that magic is 6'7". He was measured for the Olympics and he was 6'-7 1/4" in socks). Completely irrelevant to this video, but Michael Jordan had always been listed as 6'6", but I stood next to Michael Jordan two different times in the 90s, and he was actually closer to 6'4". Which makes his accomplishments even more impressive.

I'll never forget the 10' "shovel-in" to 7'4" Ralph Sampson that was LUCK but it went in to win the WCF series and poor Michael Cooper fainted right there on the court under the basket. Lakers had the 2-1 Finals series over the Celtics, but they lost their first try in '81 and had to add James Worthy to be able to beat 'em. Sweetie you need to learn more about Larry... he literally gave up his basketball career when he was like 18... at Indiana State.. it was just too much for him.. being in the spotlight.. he went home and started a career as a trash man.. working for public works. Larry was never afraid of hard work.. now matter what it was.. You need to watch the documentary of Larry and Magic..

Look at Pete Maravich in college. 44.2 ppg no 3 point line and only played 3 years.

If you see other players talking about him, they'll say Larry was a legit 6'10". See him taller standing next to Magic? Magic is 6'9". I think they just took and used the college stat of 6'9" when he came into the NBA.

Don't quote me on this but, I've heard that Bird preferred to be considered 6'9" because he preferred playing *small* forward. Supposedly, at that time, a player's height was an influence on the position they might play. I don't know if that's so, but it is something I read somewhere.

You need to watch the video by Clayton Crowley. He has a series making the case for eight players he believes have legitimate claims as the GOAT. One of them is for Larry Bird.

Every young reactor says the same thing when they see players fall for Bird's fakes What you don't understand he was a true Triple Threat if you didn't react to one way he was going to get you the other if you reacted to that way he was going to get you with another. That's why players were so on edge and why so many of them feigned injuries when they had to play against Larry, lol. P.S. Keep in mind, every single athletic player back in the day, just knew that they were going to be the "one" that shut down Larry Bird.. and player after player after player failed and failed miserably.

Dude, you miss half the video when you talk while the people on screen are talking. I saw you miss so much in this video, amazing stuff being said, teaching you history, but all you young people like to talk instead of learn. A little advice, listen to what they are saying, you missed the pacers celtics game narrative completely by talking over it. Bird had a broken cheek, the Pacers were losing until Bird went out, Pacers came back, Bird iced them. People want to see you react to the whole story of these videos, not ask questions like, "I wonder what the score of this game was", talking right over the people telling you about the game. Frustrating to watch.
