I swear. Powerless. Is. The. Best. Book. Ever. Stop. Fricking. Hating. Being an eleven year old who is about to enter the editing phase of my third book, I think it’s very impressive that Lauren Roberts published it when she was eighteen.

okay two things - first, eleven with two books out already? thats rly impressive coming from somebody who writes for fun is also a teen:) and second, i dont rly think its impressive. the writing is average and it really should have been marketed as a romantasy from the start instead of a tantasy, because - personal opinion but still - this book is almost like 75% romance. yes i get kai and pae and whatever, and yeah theyre cute, but it gets so repetitive. like, i want plot and i read this and picked it up for the plot, which i admit has intriguing premise, lots of potential. but its not carried. no, its focused on the romance instead, and the plot is kind of a side character here. then u gotta count the obvious 'bad things', like pae being claustrophobic even though she literally moves through CROWDS and MASSES in the slums which she stated herself. also, why are sticky buns the only thing anyone talks about? and actually, my main problem isnt the romance because at least thats cute, or the loopholes because it doesnt affect the story to a disturbing point, but that adena. was. forgotten. literally the best friend, and paedyn conveniently forgets her for some chapters while being swept up in this whirlwind romance. then she dies boo hoo - i dont get the emotional impact because it was never built up. and yes i read powerful and reckless just to see if the series could be better, but i felt like adena was such a wasted character, one dimensional and whatnot. like literally in powerful, when adena apparently got harassed by those men, it wasnt even described, only stated. and reckless was just kinda repetitive, yes the twist was good but most part was just me being confused about calum and being bored. oh yeah and flat characters, stand in characters - another big problem. like blair, she exists literally just to be crappy. no development, just a one-sided mean girl who exists to exist. yk? so its kinda not fun. and yeah dont get me wrong, im not hating on the author. i do realize how much effort it is to write a book, but i do hate the wasted potential. it could have been a really great book, maybe even comparable to hg if it was written better, developed better, and so on. she deserved a better editor, and yeah i just dont get the hype. yes its an easy read, but like its definitely not as good as everyone says. like lenny and the resistance - develop them more! dont introduce them for like three scenes then make them so instrumental for the plot. anway. thank u for listening to my rambling.

Good point with the claustrophobia, and I love to hear other people‘s opinions on books. Thank you so much btw! Also thanks for sharing your perspective, if I reread this book I will definitely keep all these ideas in mind. You made some great points, and I do agree with you, especially on the romance part, but I did enjoy this book and I totally understand that we have different tastes! Thanks again!

@Lylywithautism oh, thank you for replying! yeah i totally get why some people like it, because rly, its plot premise is good, its romance is good. its basically like hg x red queen, as its marketed as, but just falling short of expectations, at least for me. different people, different choices ig:) and lemme end off with restating - ur genuinely amazing for publishing two books alr at 11. i admire you:)

4:10 as a teen, I do quite like sophisticated and thought-provoking books and have several friends that also prefer such. YA is supposed to be more mature--that's why it's not _middle grade._ A lot of Booktok books get slapped with a "YA" label mostly because they have some makeout scenes or intimate romance, not because it actually handles a complex world/plot and mature topics.

i’ve read all of those besides red queen but i own it and am planning to read it once i move and unpack. the other books were masterpieces, except I personally didn’t like Caraval as much as the others. I did read it right after ouabh trilogy, which was absolutely incredible, so i may have had too high of standards when reading caraval. also the review on hunger games. children murdering each other is horrendous, but that’s also the point of the book. emphasizing on the horror of it and acknowledging poverty and partiality towards the rich and poor/uncabable.

@milky694

@Lylywithautism the characters had no personality. When switching POV between Kai and Paedyn, they had the same voice. The author didn't seem to change how Kai or Paedyn spoke from their perspectives. Paedyn also doesn't seem to have any motives to be a part of the resistance. And Kai didn't feel like his character was written in depth. Also, I wouldn't say I liked the power dynamic in their relationship, Kai having to protect Paedyn as she had no power. Also, the author constantly would tell instead of show and repeat the same points over and over again. I think the author doesn't believe the reader can read between the lines, but we can, so I wish she would leave space for us to read between the lines. for example, show me how Kai is a monster, don't just tell me. when it comes to being similar to Red Queen, I will list some similar points off the top of my head. Both poor thieves with the seamstress's little sister, meet the prince after stealing the coin. mean girl at the castle who is mean to the MC. After the public event, the poor girl is invited to the castle to live with two princes. princes have different mothers but the same father, and pine for MC. The girl joins the rebels while in the castle who has no power and wants to overthrow the monarch. the same ball event happens with the dancing with the other brother secretly instead of the one she goes to the ball with AND at the ball a bomb goes off too. and at the end, we have the same arena fight, a bomb goes off, escapes, and the brother she went to the ball with wants to hunt her down. while there are many differences too, they are overshadowed by the glaring similarities that just frustrated me to no end.

@milky694 thank you so much for your opinion! This definitely helped me see this book from a different perspective, and I will definitely keep your thoughts in mind the next time I reread this book. I do honestly kind of agree with you in Kai and Paeydn‘s relationship, it was a little odd and confusing, but I did enjoy this book, and we have different perspectives, so that’s ok! Thanks for sharing!

I read 5 survive. It wasn't that good. When you think about it, ya it's good. But the thing is, it was boring. I mean, yay life threaining and since i don't want to spoil it, when thinking about it's a book i would've liked. And i kind of like it. I was just so happy when it was over and i finished it.

Nah I understood the red queen but i legit thought it was the 'glass sword' the second book of the 5 book series. That book was absolute DOGWATER I didn't even get past it, It was actually so boring, so lengthy so bland compared to the red queen. I love red queen, i have that one red special edition but DONT waste your time on glass sword
