Ali’s boss not paying him for months is something that happened to so many Indian/foreign people in Korea(and still does). After the show came out, it shed more light on the working conditions. This is from an article talking about the show. “Foreign immigrants were first allowed into South Korea in 1993, when the country’s rapid development made it impossible to fill all the blue-collar jobs in manufacturing, construction and agriculture. The situation they were dealing with was incredibly exploitative. Employers would pay them very low wages and sometimes even seize their passports and pay them nothing at all. Since their visas were tied directly to their companies and there were no foreign-language options for reporting exploitation, they often had no options. Isolation, small living quarters and dangerous work environments were constant realities.”

@@K000H it really is. Some places here in America do the same to undocumented people, especially from Mexico. They take passports and make them work. I’ve seen news stories of people doing it to maids and field workers. The most recent big bust I saw was in Georgia a little over a year ago. “Victims include over one hundred laborers smuggled from Mexico and Central America into “brutal” and “inhumane” working conditions. Under the threat of gun violence, some were allegedly forced to dig for onions with their bare hands, earning only 20 cents for each bucket harvested. At least two people died on the job. Another was allegedly repeatedly raped. When not out in the fields, workers were detained in work camps surrounded by electric fencing, or held in cramped living quarters, including dirty trailers with raw sewage leaks. There was little to no access to food or safe drinking water. According to the indictment, laborers were charged unlawful fees for transportation, food and housing. And though they were putatively hired for agricultural work, some migrants were illegally used for lawn care, construction, and repair tasks. To prevent escapes, members of the accused crime ring unlawfully confiscated workers’ passports and documents. Conspirators also sold and traded workers amongst themselves, per the indictment.”

This is one of my fav episodes of the whole season, for reasons. Fun fact: The girl that plays the thief in the first episode is a supermodel and this show was her FIRST acting role. Take that with you as you watch the show.

The writers having the characters go back was the best decision they could have made, its such a hard episode to watch but its one of my favorites. They were in such desperate situations that the game makers didn't even have to threaten them. Genius. "Hell" is such a fitting title.

A friend said that Squid Game is like Saw. I told him the difference is that Saw’s victims had no choice because they were forced, while Squid Game allowed for the players to choose to be in the game or leave.

This is one of the episodes that turns this from a good show into a great one. It puts the choice of participation into the hands of the characters, making the show about something bigger than just “what if children’s games but you die.” It also serves as a great introduction to the other characters, not just their circumstances but their character and values. And it also establishes that The Games has a certain ethical code, it’s not just a bunch of kidnappers who want to watch people get hurt. And it’s still not even the best episode- anyone who’s already watched the show can probably guess which ep I consider the best.

Note the distinct color differences between the outside world and the Game world. "Real life" is bleak, dreary, grey, and washed-out. The "Game" world is bright, cheerful, vivid, and colorful, and distinctly child-themed. Such an impactful cinematic choice in lighting and color usage. The music is another amazing aspect of this show. Powerful impressions, both fitting and contrasting, are really highlighted by the music choices.

There are nearly 10 million people in Seoul alone. The population of New York City is nearly 9 million people and 15,000 people go missing there every year. The people in the Squid Game are lower class, poor people who don't have much family or they wouldn't be so desperate to play the game, and poor people are often considered disposable. Sae-byeok (the woman) and Ali are both illegal immigrants who rarely get reported missing.

The idea to send them all home this season might be what makes this show so good. They all got to witness what the game was first hand and they still decided to come back shows what kind of position they are in.

One thing that's not always clear to reactirs is that Song Woo was burning charcoal in his bathroom in an attempt to commit suicide. It helps add to his character knowing that I think, especially his choice of wearing a full suit.

Yea, i don't think a lot of non-Koreans are really aware of the charcoal brick - at least not Americans and Brits. I'd never heard of it until i started watching kdramas and got into other Korean culture. I'm shocked how deadly it is, but how easy it is to get hold of them!

One thing I have to give to Korean industry is that they deal with actual things that are going bad in their society, and debt is a part of it. Its one of the reasons I liked Parasite as well. I hope you guys continue watching because it gets sadder but the story is riveting.

I love how this episode highlights the question of "did they ever really have a choice?" For most of the players, they're dead either way. The game only serves to give them some kind of hope On a slightly related note, if you haven't watched Alice In Borderland yet, y'all should react to it! It's absolutely amazing

Being diabetic myself, I can just imagine having to have a limb be amputated. I’ve had relatives who had to lose a leg but then infection spread and they died. The realization and desperation one must feel to go back to that environment for their mom’s sake 🤧

55, litterally been to hell and back, thought I was a pretty strong person. Not a tuff guy, but i mountain man up to get things done.... I have to warn you ahead of time. I have never had something break me like this series. I will not tell you when, or how, but even watching the reactions still after maybe the 70th reaction to this show will make me cry like a little baby. I consider this a Masterpiece of Modern Emotion, that has not been captured in any form of art, in the history of humanity. PURE ART!

I love that this show paints a very deep debate about this competition. Yeah it’s violent, unfair, and horrible…but is it any more horrible than the lives these people lead? The world is so unbelievably broken and more of a hell for so many of them that it makes perfect sense why all of them would rather die or risk their lives than go back to it without the money. And Gi Hun’s story in this episode is fucking painful to watch. This is why he is such a fascinating protagonist to watch. Yeah he’s an awful person but he is not malicious. As opposed to Sang Woo who is both an awful person and malicious. You can’t help but emphasize with Gi Hun despite the fact that you understand that everyone in his life calling him out on his bullshit are absolutely correct in doing so. And that moment where his daughter looks scared of him? Man…that killed me the first time I watched the show. This episode is my favorite episode. Everything that comes after this would not hit as hard if this episode did not exist.

If I were in the position of that old man, where I was dying and I had nothing to lose, I would also cancel the game. It isn't really all about me, even if I wanted to stay. over 200 people died, we are left with 201. and half of those people want to go home, doesn't matter if 100 want to stay. You can't force 100 people into a game to be murdered. It was in the end their choice to come back. If It was me tho, I would have chosen to leave. I'm not going to risk my life for money.

I think in watching this episode, is not considered enough a cultural context . In Asia I have experienced this type of voting over and over. The mentality of not wanting to be the "nail sticking out" or the "deciding factor" is forefront. This is a huge decision for the entire group of debtors. I was not surprised at the 50/50 to the last man.

I really wish reaction channels would stop including these "throwaway" blurbs in their episode titles because they add nothing. They could, however, contain potential spoilers for the episode. For instance, in the title for this episode, you added the blurb "WILL THEY COME BACK??!! And for what? Especially because the question was answered in the end of the episode. So who was that for and why include it at all? Reaction channel viewers know the answer, but your title is available for all to see (including those who've not expressly decided to venture into spoilerland with a click). Your reaction here 6:05 was priceless. This 100% certitude of yours is what we viewers tune in for. And you weren't alone. 99% of everyone who reacted to this had their expectations subverted in a major way. So why throw out potential spoilers in the video title? For some sharp KZbin consumers out there, that could be enough to nudge them in that direction. Sometimes these blurbs are vague enough to be innocuous. But increasingly, the channels that choose to include blurbs in their titles will have a few that provide spoiler information. For reaction fans of a show, simply putting Squid Game 1x2 "Hell" is sufficient. The extra stuff (which is always based on something gleaned/experienced AFTER HAVING VIEWED THE EPISODE) runs the risk of containing spoiler info. I think your judging the main character a little too soon your gonna feel bad when you get to know his full story😅yes he’s not your archetype main protagonist but he’s not a bad person either does he have a gambling addiction? yes but he’s not a money hungry person he didn’t just take the money offered to him by the stepfather and abandon his child ,even tho he’s incapable of taking care of her he still cares for her and did he steal from his very old mother ?yes but he also is trying to help her in this episode you kept saying don’t say that when he was asking for money and saying I’ll pay back but whatelse is he supposed to do just sit back and do nothing and let his mother die he also chose to get into the game knowing he may die for his mother he took very bad life decisions not a bad person tho

Yeah but he IS kind of a shitty person. In the first few minutes of the first episode he literally STEALS his mothers debit card and uses it at the ATM to withdraw cash for GAMBLING. That is NOT a good person.... He has good traits and bad ones. Sure, he gets better over time, but their initial judgement of him I think is accurate given what they're showing of him to this point.

We all make mistakes in life, and those mistakes can cost us very much, and before you know it, you're in a whole lot of debt. So don't be so quick to judge. Life's complicated. Please switch over to the other, actual translated English subs! The subs you're using right now are for the dubbed version. Sometimes they're not even close to what the actors are actually saying in Korean. The dub for Squid Game is HORRID.
