I have a theory that a think is going to explain tooooo much about the illogical things in Dumbledore, anothers professor and Hogwarts... And maybe Magical Britain too. the name that I use to that is: Time Turner poisoning. The idea is that all professors, Filch, Hagrid + the students like Hermione and Percy... Use time turners all days, three times to Dumbledore, because he has three Works... And that is Bad for their mental health and rasoning and to Hogwarts to, with so much people playing with time and space in there. Brothers, think about it... How McGonagall do classes, plan classes, take care of the animals, read homeworks, head of Gryffindor, second in comand and security in the nights... Time Turner... And how a intelligent caring person see someone puting a orphaned baby in front a door in november, to live with the Worst type of muggle and Say... Yeah, I'm no going to do nothing about that... 33:25 For anyone curios about the text on the Chinese Peter Pan Harry Potter cover, my partner told me that the reason the weird Peter Pan cover title translated to “Mysterious Magic Mouth” is actually just because of the font. The character was recognized as mouth instead of stone. As for the “with 2” part, it’s the same. Weird font made the word for author get translated wrong. It’s most likely the correct book inside, but with the wrong picture.

Some context for the Mass Market edition, that was the one they gave school students when they chose Harry Potter as assigned reading. So, they needed a cover that was meant for mass production so a school can buy 100+ at a time and hand them out to students for free. So it’s less meant to appeal to people who already know about Harry Potter, or people who are new and see it at a library or bookstore, but more just to school administrators who want to cut costs

When I think about Hogwarts's Entrance Hall I envision the one from the games...and it didn't even appear once in the movies.

Yep! That's actually the edition I read Harry Potter for the first time when I was 12. It was the first edition of the books in Catalan, if I'm not mistaken. I remember only reading the first and the third books in Catalan. The rest I read in Spanish in the Salamandra editions

The picture on the Chinese New Curriculum edition at 32:30 is from the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone PC game from 2001, which is quite interesting, depending on when this edition was printed, it could be seen as quite niche, as the game is not sold anymore and can't be played on modern computers without modding, meaning the target audience might never even have had a chance to play the game, though if it was released while the game was new, it's a bit more understandable.

For the first one I think he probably just found him in the garden or something. It's mentioned Peter would have to find a Wizarding family to hide in to keep up with the news (it would also have been more comfortable and safer than living in the wild). He might even have targeted the Weasly's as a porer family, more likely to let one of their kids keep a rat a pet rather than buying owls or other fancy pets, but most likely scenario is he just showed up in their garden and acted all friendly and cuddly until he was made a pet. As for Hermione never getting Crookshanks is more interesting. For one thing there wouldn't be the same tension between Ron and Hermione through that book. Without Crookshanks stealing the passwords from Neville, Sirius couldn't get into Gryffindor Tower, but as that was ultimately useless it wouldn't change much. Also "Scabbers" wouldn't disappear for the last third of the book, meaning he wouldn't be at Hagrid's at the end, but most likely just up in the dorms, meaning Sirius wouldn't have any reason to attack them when he did, meaning the entire ending would be different, including Buckbeak would most likely be executed as there would be no reason to go back in time and save him, if Sirius isn't caught and locked up in a tower at the end. Would change the story quite a bit, would be interesting to see their take on it. As for Wormtail being killed, the main points would be that he couldn't find and help Voldemort, or bring Bertha Jorkins to him, so the entire Goblet of Fire narrative would be completely different. Quite possibly though Barty Crouch Jr. Would still have a part to play in Voldemort eventual resurrection, as he said he was able to fight Crouch Sr.'s Imperius Curse even before Voldemort came to him and set him free properly. Also Peter dying early would mean his hand can't turn on him like it did in Malfoy Manor, but too much might've changed before then so they never even end up there, or under widely different circumstances. As for Sirius I don't know if he could clear his name with a corpse, or if he would even get the chance. Also, even if he could be cleared for the murder 13 years ago, he would have made himself actually guilty of murder, and I'm not sure if they would let him tell the story, or if they would believe him or if it would matter at all, so he might still have to go on the run. Could be interesting too as a What if.

About the capes, for one thing they are associated with magic, I don't know how prevalent they are in later covers, but for a first entry before the series picked up steam, it was probably just thought of as a way to get the point across about magic. Also I don't know for other languages, but there might be some translational confusion. In Swedish, the word for cloak (which they do wear at least sometimes on top of their robes) is the same as the word for cape, and which one is meant has to be inferred by context or by more descriptors. Maybe that is the case in other languages as well, causing for some confusion.

glad someone else highlighted this, to add to your explanation typically cloak & cape can be interchangeable in the uk, with the only significant defining difference is that cloaks typically though not always have a hood, also I think the brothers are confusing Capes/Cloaks with Robes somewhat

@@TatsuChi For sure. Robes are themselves kinda cape/cloak like, though usually with sleeves. The Harry Potter robes are probably more like full length dresses, rather than say a bathrobe that open fully at the front, as that is their main garment, and judging by some clues, (like in "Snapes worst memory", where Snapes "pants" (underwear as far as I understand in the UK) is shown when he is upside down), trousers don't seem to be standard Wizard-wear. It's been a while since I read the Swedish translation, but I don't even think they translate robes, but rather call them the equivalent of garments, or just clothes, since we don't really have a word for robes. We have bath robes and pajama robes, but the word used for those is the same as "coat", so that would just lead to even more confusion, so clothes it is. As for capes/cloaks, the way I learned to associate the words as a foreign speaker is I imagine capes as more regal, something that dosen't really serve any purpose other than to look fancy, usually (but not always) the ones that just cover your back, while cloaks in my mind is the kind of thing that you could wrap yourself completely in, like what we see a lot in Lord of the Rings. Like before they had invented modern coats and jackets you would wrap yourself in a cloak if you were going out when it was chilly or rainy. But both those use the same word Swedish.

The following Italian book covers from the first edition get so much better! I recommend checking them out, they get less inaccurate and somewhat more abstract, whilst becoming more deep in meaning, e.g. The deathly hallows has Harry and Hermione under the invisibility cloak visiting the Godric's Hollow cemetery, with as a background a very faint print of Lily and James' tombstone inscription and lilies on the back of the book.

While the classical Harry Potter "font" was created for the US edition, it's quite likely that any non-US editions using that font did so because the movies popularized it (in Sweden the first 3 books where actually released with a straight font first, then later had the Harry Potter font added in never print runs). So it's more likely a book with the Harry Potter font on the cover isn't a readers first meeting with the character, or at least not their first knowledge of it existing, which might affect what the publishers choose to put on the cover for marketing purposes. Using the logo at all after the success of the movies is of course a marketing scheme in it self to really highlight the books in the book store.

The cape thing is probably due to translation. Cloak and cape means the same in German, I'm sure it's similar in many other languages. Growing up, I used to think Harry did wear a cape for that very reason - because I read the books in German as a kid. Also, fyi, Catalan is the official language of the Catalonia region in Spain (where Barcelona is located), the Balearic islands, and the country of Andorra. :)

yessss! I was waiting for more cover reactions! The first edition Czech one is actually quite rare, they changed the look of the sorting hat later and then just adopted the US cover even later on :D I have this first edition and actually learned how to read with it so I'm glad it at least got some points! I personally love the representation of the Sorting ceremony, but to me the true magic of these first editions is the inside and the fact that there are little maps inside - do the other language versions have them? I'm curious 👀 Anyway, looking forward to more book cover reactions! Hopefully also with Ben! :)

According to Amazon, the Breton edition of this book weighs on 1.06 pounds, therefore it CAN'T have any actual bindings on it because that would probably triple the actual weight of the book.

I think I have an explaination for the cape thing. I'm German, so I only read the German and English version, but this might also apply for other languages. In the English version, they wear cloaks right? "Cloak", you could translate into German as "Mantel", which is more like a coat (so thick winter outer wear), or "Umhang", which is more like a cape (and of lighter fabric). As the students were wearing their cloaks all year round, and also inside, they went with "Umhang", and I guess, when the illustrator got the German version to read, they invisioned more of a super heroe-y cape. This design became insanely recognisable in Germany, so they didn't do any adjustments after the movies came out. So, tl;dr: One word can be translated in different ways in another language, which might cause "confusion" with the illlustrator.

Also, fyi (I didn't see any comment explaining this yet): Catalan (7:33) is a language spoken in Catalonia and Andorra. These are regions in Spain (capital Catalonia: Barcelona), and Catalan is quite close to Spanish, but also not at all.

The Peter Pan edition is an unauthorised version published in 2000. Basically they took original book, changed the cover with something found on internet (and in 2000 it wasn’t easy to find something good)

The US Market Edition was the first version I ever read. I remember thinking it would be about thieves stealing a powerful stone just but the name and art. Fell in love with it regardless.

7:54 it's pronounced Cat (like the animal)- uh - lan (like local area network). It's a dialect with roots in Spanish, I believe, spoken I think mostly along the Mediterranean. Also, the Persian Harry himself is somehow reminiscent of Footloose while the nameplate is somehow reminiscent of "Diary of a Whimpy Kid"

It's not a dialect, it's a separate language, like portugese and spanish are separate languages, otherwise you're right, it's mostly spoken ín Catalonia, Valencia and the Balear Islands, also it's a relative to the occitan language also mentioned in the video, spoken in southern France
