The multiple life sentences are for each count of murder. If a person kills 4 people, he may be sentenced a life sentence for each victim

Part of it is so no victim or their family feels betrayed or left out from justice. Part of it is also in some states at least life sentences can be commuted even paroled given certain circumstances & even possible pardons so multiple life sentences makes any of those things more unlikely & harder to come by. I also agree but do understand its one reason why Darrell E. Brooks Jr. who was wanted for DV & later driving an SUV into a holiday parade in Waukesha Wisconsin 2 years ago was given something like nearly 750 years in prison without parole. 6 people died & at least 62 others were injuried mostly children & seniors. BTW 2 weeks before this incident he was arrested & release on $1000 dollar bail after being arrested & charged with running over a woman
