Higurashi is set in 1980's Japan, in the countryside rural village of Hinamizawa. When Keiichi Maebara moves from the city of Tokyo, he quickly becomes close friends with his classmates, and all seems well. However everything takes a horrific turn when the village's annual festival arrives. Keiichi learns recent years have brought murders and disappearances on the same night, and they all seem related to the village's worship of their guardian god Oyashiro-sama. The further Keiichi digs into the mystery, the deeper he falls as he begins to question who and what he can trust. Can you solve the mystery before another tragedy occurs?

So, just to clarify, Higurashi is adapted from a visual novel and yeah, it spans 5 seasons, 4 OVAs and a special episode, released from 2006 up to 2021. In series chronological order they would go like: -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2006) (season 1) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Outbreak (2013) (This is a 50 minute special linking the events of season 1 and 2) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (2007) (season 2) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (2009) (season 3) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (2011) (These are 4 OVAs meant only for fanservice and have no plot relevancy) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou (2020) (season 4) -Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu (2021) (season 5 and final) So yeah, the change in artstyle is due to a studio change and 7 years in between the release of the Outbreak special and season 4/Gou.

I'm pretty sure Outbreak doesn't link between S1 and S2, it's a standalone story which is then followed up by Kamikashimashi-hen. Correct me if I'm though.
