Kundiman has 2 meanings in tagalog, (1) its a traditional Classic Filipino Love Song to Serenade either to their beloved country or to the one they adore and cherish; and (2) a conjuction of 3 words Kung-Hindi-Man which means "Even if its not..." or based on the context of the song it means "Even if we're not... (I still love you)". Waving handkerchiefs used to symbolizes courtship as part of the traditions. When a man picks up the dropped handkerchief of a maiden it means he do like/love the maiden who dropped it.

Kundiman is a Filipino traditional courtship song. The difference from a Harana (serenade) is that kundiman pertains to the 3 syllables "Kung + Hindi + man" which translates to: even if not../if not then.. It means that you offer your affection to your love even if it is not possibly returned or circumstances / obstacles prevents both of you from being together. It presents one's enduring love in a song.
