Brandon Sanderson's BYU lecture series is just amazing and, in general, he's probably the one source I'd recommend without a qualifying statement to anybody looking to get into writing. And oddly enough, Shaelin's "tree planter" advice from her professor echoes Brandon Sanderson's "brick layer" advice from one of his lectures >_>

I love how Sanderson just tells you how to find the right process for you instead of telling you that you NEED to do X in order to write a good novel. Even with regards to things he doesn't do or doesn't like, he's very open-minded. The only times he says something is wrong is when it's not the result the author intended, or it conflicts with the tone and what's been established before.

Great video! You and Brandon Sanderson are probably the two people who have helped me the most in learning writing craft, and finding my own process.

I've found the insight and advice from both Shaelin and Brandon to be very valuable to me. Thank you for this.

Anyone else have any idea how they found themselves watching one of their favorite teachers validate another one of their favorite teachers?

One way to develop side-characters is to create an agenda they have which clashes with the MC's character arc. This lends itself to subplots well. Off stage subplots must crash into the main story problem ( at some point) and that's a good way to add layers of complexity that are related to and complicate the main plot and protag's character arc.

Sanderson's classes are the nuts and bolts of writing in a workman's formate. A this is a job and these are the steps need to complete a novel. He is not one of those teachers who cultivates a cult of personality. It is wonderful his whole course is on line, the only thing missing is having him critique your work.

So so so can relate with brainstorming a story while doing the dishes. 😅 I think about my story practically each moment I do something else like other chores or even driving. We need other physical activities also, anyway, otherwise we'll kill our shoulders and eyes from writing. And when the time comes for me to write the things I composed in my mental note during other activities it is easier. Beandon Sanderso is a Genius Author and Professor.
