Yes, when wiring, say, someone’s kitchen, appearance is just as important as functionality, so everything’s hidden behind walls and in cabinets, even if that means having to tear holes in the walls if something goes wrong. On the space station, aesthetics is less important than being able to access things quickly if something fails.

4:42 I think they also (mostly) don’t understand orbit, ie falling toward the planet at a constant speed but missing it because the orbital velocity is higher. An astronaut wouldn’t just “float” if he had zero orbital velocity. They may think the fact that he’s not falling means he’s outside the earth’s gravity, rather than being in orbit, constantly pulled toward the center of the earth.

WRT wiring. "Patch Panels" are often 'messy'. Yes, we've seen posts where all the wiring is laid down nice and even, zip-tied together in neat bundles. But the whole concept of 'patch panels' is that you can quickly find a connection, disconnect it and move connections to newlocations. Think of the old time telephone switchboard we've all seen in photos. The operator pulls up a cord, plugs it into the jack with the flashing light and asks, "number please?". Then puts the other end of the cord into the requested connection. Random, quick-to-connect, quick-to-disconnect.

@Jack-Hands that's correct. An interesting theory I heard regarding David and Goliath is that there is a possibility that Goliath had a condition called Acromegaly. Acromegaly is when the pituitary in the brain secretes excess growth hormone resulting in the body becoming much larger than normal. People with acromegaly are at a much higher risk for developing cerebral aneurysms meaning that sections of the walls of the blood vessels in their brain balloon outward and become weaker. If Goliath had acromegaly and had developed a cerebral aneurysm, it is quite possible that the impact of David's stone caused that aneurysm to burst, killing Goliath.

For the wires on the ISS, I don't know this as a fact, but I can almost guarantee it's like that because putting all of that behind paneling is just extra weight. Extra weight eats into your max payload capacity. Plus extra weight = extra money. So why the hell would you ship up a tonne of panels just to make it look a little nicer?
@Sevicify
@Sevicify Жыл бұрын
That's a reasonable thought but it is incorrect. In a search on the topic I came across a Reddit post about the exposed cables by a former Operation Support Officer, which they described as basically the mission control position in charge of maintenance and various equipment in the space station. In this post they stated it was designed with the intention of being neat with covers and such that had been launched. Indeed looking at old footage of the Destiny Module (the module shown in this video) launch (specifically the post flight presentation of "Space Shuttle Flight 102 (STS-98)" is great for this) the sides were all cleanly covered and the tour shown in said video showed covers in other modules, and looking at newer footage of the Destiny Module the covers are still there just with stuff that have been run on the outside over time. The reason stated for this is because the astronauts are generally very busy so for efficiency they do enough to make equipment work rather than spending too much time making it all neat.

Even though weight is a concern, it wouldn't be that much of a concern in the ISS. As it was launched into space using several missions. None of which pushed the limits of payload capacity. As someone else pointed out the astronauts are busy bees and don't have the time to keep everything tidy. Also the ISS is constantly changing its configuration, so it would be a endless cycle of tidying up everytime something changed. Want to a real mess, look at some pictures from the MIR. They had so many "lose" wires they couldn't close several internal hatches which on a couple occasions caused serious safety issues.

I was so happy to finally find someone like me. Not easy when one is a metal head with cooking and long walks as an interrest.... However. When we went into the topic of knowledge and experts, she cut the communication, when I said that I would always believe an expert that had +30 years of experience in one field than I would believe some facebook scientist that did 10 minute watching a video on facebook or whatever. 6:36 What wasn't addressed here is the landline phone thing. Arthur and Dan addressed the photo, but I think the main "argument" of this picture is that the president talked to Apollo 11 via a landlane phone. But that would be impossible if Apollo 11 was truly in space, therefore it must've been fake. However, the explanation is of course incredibly simple. The landline went from the president to the NASA mission control. From the mission control to Apollo 11, the communication went via radio waves, not via a landline. Obviously. 10:35 Ahhh I hate this one. First of all electromagnetic fields have nothing to do with this, gravity does. Secondly, yes, planetary bodies do have an impact on Earth and organisms living on it, that has been proven. However, again, this impact is caused by gravity. And the only thing gravity can influence really is movement. So yes, planetary bodies like Jupiter or the Moon can influence the movement of things on Earth. But not personalities. Maybe the gravitaional pull of Jupiter causes my body to move 1 nanometer closer to it every second or something, sure. But there's absolutely no reason why it should also affect my luck in love or my bravery or any of the hogwash that astrology proponents talk about.

I think younger people noticing 'shower thoughts' as being a time when they get inspired ideas may be down to the fact that when they are in the shower is one of the few times during the day when their attention is not 1000% glued to the phone in their hands or some other device. It used to be, in the pre-internet era- that people would often spend a certain amount of every day just idling daydreaming. This could happen while sitting on their porch with a glass of ice tea, under the shade tree in a backyard swing, while taking an aimless walk, or while doing some insignificant chore like washing dishes (gasp!!! washing dishes by hand!!!). People still do a lot of sitting around and walking, but often they walk while staring at their phones. The mind needs a certain amount of time to just ruminate on its experiences of the past days and weeks. This is when inspiration can often strike.

It's funny, cuz Facebook is also where my SIL gets her information on how to be a good mother. Needless to say she's doing a shitty job. For a while, my then 1½-year old niece had some stomach problems and would often throw up, and yet nothing seemed wrong with her. They couldn't figure out the reason. They asked on Facebook (obviously) and even went so far as to contact family members to see if this was something genetic. But nothing worked. It turned out that, surprise, a 1½-year old can't tolerate cola which they were contantly feeding her. She had this big three/four liter bottle she was constantly carrying around which was filled with cola. Who could have ever guessed that was the cause? But would they listen? No. Cuz they are the only people in the entire world to have ever had children so no one knew anything about children except them. Not even other mothers who had adult children at the time. No one knew a thing.

That was nothing but fun - thanks SciMan Dan and Arthur TV for pulling this together. Memes are fun - I share them with my kids - great dad jokes are found in memes. My favorite was the Goliath skull meme - a complete photoshop job - and coming from a group that claims everything else is photoshopped. What a hoot! And as far as evolution is concerned, farmers and ranchers have been breeding positive traits into animals for hundreds of years - it isn't natural selection, but forced selection - it is amazing to see the changes in farm animals in less than a century.

I am French and my level in English is rather good but not excellent. So, when I read this kind of Facebook science posts, I always tell myself that I must have misunderstood something, that it's too complicated for my level of English. Then I reread it and I am reassured because the problem does not come from me, what is written is just an abysmal stupidity

I definitely think you should do these from time to time. I still like the one topic long form Tin Foils but sprinkling in a little crazy now and then like this is fun. I like the concept of having a guest reviewer who may not have heard the same arguments over and over just to see a "layman" reaction to the stupidity that us regular viewers are so used to.

Keep being that beacon of truth in a bleak fog of ignorance. Whether or not those you surround yourself with understand, or agree, or accept. Remain steadfast by the truth and do it for no other reason than because it's the truth. Objective reality does exist, it just exists outside the subjectivity of our minds attempt at perception.

That evolution punch was almost a side splitter. 2 years, honestly…what did you expect to see differently ? I am on the fence with all aspects of evolution but I am very confident that there was a whole lot of adaptation going on over the course of time. None of us were there at the time, so nobody can say with 100% certainty but it is quite obvious that the species on Earth have been affected by evolution in many ways and adaptation, they sort of go hand in hand. But to visit a zoo and look at a monkey 2 years in a row and not notice any change….am I in Bizarro World ?? What in the heck is going on nowadays, are people regressing ? Maybe a reverse evolution in some manner for some of these folks ?? I don’t know but it’s that or our education system is truly failing its students to the absolute MAX !!!

The Goliath skull one cracked me up, because it doesn't even make sense within the Fundie frame of reference. The Bible says David fought Goliath in the Valley of Elah, which is in Israel/ Palestine, and killed him by shooting him in the forehead with a slingshot. The badly photoshopped giant skull in the image was supposedly found 'outside Rome' (in Italy!) and conspicuously doesn't have any slingshot damage. It's silly on so many levels I think it might be a parody or trolling, but you can never tell with Fundies.

I won't say that a tangled mess of wires would be easier to fix than if they were neatly organized behind a panel Also for the Darwin post you use nautical miles for distance over sea and usual miles for distance over land and the math checks out :) Also also, the co-host (Arthur, is it?) looks like he still has some hope to make the flerfs understand his point, and Dan already gave up on that long ago and only makes sarcastic remarks

Shower thoughts are believed to happen because you are warm, relaxed and often less stressed - allowing thoughts to flow, your mind to wander and therefore ideas to pop up! Not magical but I do know some people who use being in a bath or shower to be more ‘still’ in the brain and channel their spiritual beliefs 💜

1:50. Glad I learned what the term was. There is a special type of arrogance with personal incongruity because its like "well, if I cant understand it, nobody can and therefore its a hoax". Whats funny is the complete rejection of something based on 1 picture but then they construct an entire worldview thats easily debunked or lacks any evidence on their end yet is somehow more believable.

2:00 I would like to give a probable answer for those cables, as an old system-and network engineer we tend to make things messy, but in an environment where you really need to check everything, neat and tugged cable management is a pre. It looks good, and it is not an obstacle when someone needs to get out of the server room and accidentally tripping over cables, you don't want that, because in case of a fire, the automatic fire suppression system is not a healthy environment. Now in space, you can't walk, you float as a matter of speaking, your body-actions are far more controlled than on Earth because you know all mistakes end your life, so, you must be careful. Tugging cables away is done on the space station, but when making and testing different experiments, sometimes cables and tubes have different functions, you can imagine that changing it all the time leaves hardly any time left to make things every time neat. But listening a bit further, Dan explains it too

The cables thing annoys me greatly: the pictures usually show RECONFIGURABLE LABS which are designed to house a wide variety of modular experiments over the lifetime of the space. Tucking all the cables away behind wall panels and such would be TERRIBLE design for such a facility, because it would make removing and installing experiments a huge headache, not to mention likely to break something - imagine if you have to remove a wall panel every time you need to remove or install a module, because some genius thought things should "look neat". If nothing else, you'd end up stripping screws or breaking clips, and it's not like you can just run over to Home Depot to get a bunch of spares...
