Darkseid came first in the comics in February 1971 in Forever People while Thanos came out two year later in 1973 in Iron Man 55.

I mean. Having absolutely no hope is kind of Darkseid's thing. Keep in mind, he was made to be so incredibly powerful that characters like Superman and Dr. Fate can't really challenge him alone. And it makes sense considering he is a literal omnipotent god and always has been. A character where going in with brute force alone doesn't really work, making a unique challenge that requires clever strategies to overcome.
