When my daughter was in preschool her best friend had two moms. When she brought it up all I had to say was “yes everyone’s family looks a little different. Some people have two moms or two dads. Some people have a mom and a dad. And some people only have a dad or only have a mom” And that’s it. That’s all she wanted to know.

Not even that but its just wrong biologically. Our brains arent developed enough to understand or cope with a deep emotional relationship as children, not even as teens. As adolecnats we are learning about ourselves and growing our brains are developing different mechanisms and tatics to survive and thrive and interact in a social capacity, a child getting into a romantic relationship is going to deeply affect that development and maybe even stunt or negativly influence the way the brain handels certain situations or normalize other toxic behaviors. When teens are in abusive relationship, its harder for them tonfind healthy relationships in the future because their brians have normalized the abuse and been shaped by it. Platonic love is far less demanding and compromising than romantic love. So while a person can love platonically at any age, romantic love needs a certain amount of growth and development as well a social interactions to have sucessfully also because the younger you are the more likley you are to confuse infactuation/lust with love.

Even with the horrible ways nature treats me, I still like being a woman. Stereotyping gender and gender roles doesn't send the best message, either. When I was 8, I was watching T.V and the word "lesbian" came up. My mother was in the room with me, so I decided to ask her what it meant. She said: "It's when two women like each other in a romantic way." I nodded in understanding and just kept watching T.V. When I got older, my older brother admitted that he liked boys to me and my mom. She didn't seem fazed at all. "So?" she asked. She let him know that she didn't care who he loved, as long as he treated them right and they gave him the same respect. Nothing dramatically emotional. Just straight to the point and done with. Since then, my brother and I like to fight over male actors on the screen. The whole "I saw him first!" game. When I turned 14 and was just discovering the LGBT community and the prejudice against homosexuals, I was talking to my father about it and asked for his own opinion, and that's when he told me that he was in fact bisexual. "I like guys and girls," he said, then proceeded to ask me what I wanted from the store. Then my friends began to come out after when they learned about my brother. And I had no problem with it. All because my mother made it sound normal in the beginning. You don't have to give children a full hour session on LGBT to make them accept it. Allow them to learn as they go along. Let them learn for themselves by meeting different people. If you make it sound like it is accepted, then they will accept it. Young minds are very moldable. If you beat it into them, however, they'll only associate it with stress. They'll become annoyed with how much pressure is being put on them. Just. Let. Kids. Discover.

I disagree I think when they're 12-13 is an ok age to introduce the topic of sexuality and gender to kids because that's usually when they've hit puberty and have their first sex Ed lessons. Usually it's around this age that people realize their sexuality or gender so I think it's a good time to talk about it for those who are questioning and for those who aren't who can just be educated about it. But I think it should just be introduced. Not a whole week where they learn about every sexuality and gender in existence. Then when they get another sex Ed in highschool it can be discussed again. I want to say one thing, growing up in the 80’s I was a “Tom boy” which is NOT gender dismorphia. I enjoyed dressing and not being stereotypically female. I am happily female (and straight if that matters). However had I been hyper exposed to this I may have inadvertently made decisions that weren’t true to me. I’m glad I grew up when I did. It gave me the opportunity to lean in to who a really was/am an not be influenced by who i “ could have been” ... the teenage years are the worst!!

Danielle T I keep thinking about myself , my daughter, and all the classic “late bloomers”, who weren’t “boy crazy” (we also didn’t end up as unwed teens, or thank God, the victims of PP)....but, if we were growing up today? With the craziness and indoctrination of public schools? You know you’d be having some school counselor or school nurse recommending or suggesting or encouraging “trans” as a “fix”.

Same! I was born in the early 90s but I also had a tomboy phase as a kid. And was considered "one of the boys" amongst my friends. I can't imagine how confused I would have been if I had half of this stuff pushed on me at that age.

My younger sister was born in 1999, and she grew up as a tomboy. It was lucky that even back then it wasn't as bad as it is right now, because otherwise, some people may have tried to talk her into transitioning. She grew out of the boy clothes when she was a teenager, but when she was younger, and her mind more moldable and easier to manipulate, she may have believed them if she was told she was trans.
@alexh67675 жыл бұрын

Growing up, all I was told was exactly what you said - some men fall in love with men, and women with women. No negative or positive connotations. I didn’t see anything extraordinary, but it was about the most I could comprehend at the time Kids at that age simply cannot understand complex concepts like gender nonconformity and even sex as a whole. Its really is ridiculous to be feeding them all this bs that doesn’t make sense to even the wisest adult

I got the talk at about 5. But for a good reason. My grandmother was a lesbian and my mother and her siblings never thought about talking to us about it. But I, even being the youngest, was the first out of about 15 kids in my family to ask why I had two grandmas and not a grandma and a grandfather. So my mom and her siblings gathered us all and explained to us. It was much more organic and not at all creepy

Re: You can fall in love at any age You are so much more generous than me. That set off alarm bells in my head. I just can't imagine a good reason to tell a kid that. Sure if a child has an innocent crush, you can just say it's cute and still have reasonable restrictions for when they can date but I don't see why someone would make a point of telling them they can fall in love at any age. As for teaching kids about LGBT in general, I've never understood why people think the only choices are hiding it from kids or telling them a bunch of age-inappropriate things. I was about 6 or 7 when my dad was watching the news and the word "gay" came up. It was a now-infamous story about a mysterious "gay cancer" (which of course, turned out to be AIDS). So I asked him what that meant and he just said, "A man who wants to marry another man or a woman who wants to marry another woman." So I just said, "Oh." and went back to what I was doing. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. I actually said, "Ew!" out loud when that kid asked the speaker about their genitals and my dog got worried and jumped on me to sniff my face. True story. As a kid, I would have been horrified to ask a teacher or adult visitor something like that. But clearly, things are being taught in a way that made that question seem normal to that kid. 😳

Yup same, it's supposed to be an open educational discussion, it's like he didn't have the balls to be honest, no pun intended. Honestly that answer probably confused the children more. Shaming kids for asking questions creates short term embarassment & long term ignorance. Many topics are taboo or only whispered about where misinformation spreads, you can get pregnant while having sex standing up! Putting on educational talks like this are supposed to be a judgement free safe space... It seems like they only want that to work one way.

@ohfortheloveofguacamole68035 жыл бұрын
@Mntry Mntry o.O Life skills usually mean cooking, sewing, mending clothing, and cleaning...survival skills could range from personal finance skills (woefully never taught in school) to gardening, gathering in a forest, fishing, maybe hunting in some areas. Also...Europe is a bad example for America. In most European countries, guns are illegal in the first place. Furthermore, gun laws in America are much different. I first shot a gun at 5 years old. I first went hunting with my daddy at 9. o.O Hunting is, in fact, a useful survival skill, and for some people in America, it's necessary for them to have food on the table. But in America, kids who go shooting up public places are not usually taught to shoot by their parents. Most of them are just crazy people with mental health conditions.
