I hired a professional organizer who specializes in ADHD a couple of years ago, and the first five minutes of the appointment sum up my ability to keep track of things perfectly. She suggested we start by organizing my school stuff, and I spent a solid two minutes looking around my 300 square foot studio apartment for my bright blue school backpack. 😂 The biggest piece of advice she gave me during that session was to assign something a place in the location where you use it. Even implementing that one bit of advice has made my life so much easier.

I have to put things like car keys away before I step off the door mat, if I get further into the house the thought of having to do it is gone and they are lost. So where storage for certain things is located is critical. Must be at point of use/need in many cases. Every time I break this rule I get in a mess.
@TheFeldhamster Жыл бұрын
@@dees3179I hear this "searching for the keys" thing from so many Americans (regardless of their neurotype) and I can't help wondering why. Don't you have a little shelf / table / sideboard thingy right by your door? Where I live, that's the culture in every house - some sort of landing area directly by the door where you immediately drop the keys and your wallet and probably your gloves in winter. And where you put stuff you don't want to forget when you go out, like, idk, grocery coupons or your water bottle. So you see them when you take your keys. I couldn't live without something like that, we actually have quite a big side table for this. Yeah sure, it makes our entrance hall look a bit cluttered but that's a small price to pay for always knowing where stuff is when you're in a hurry to get going. Can recommended 100%.

3:17 I hate this aspect of ADHD. The entirety of my working memory is consumed with making absolutely sure I DON'T FORGET THE THING, and so nothing gets done because I can't spare the brain energy. This was particularly bad when my work schedule was 5-6 days a week, because it essentially meant that a) I couldn't do anything before work because I couldn't risk missing my work shift, and b) I'd spend so much mental energy at work masking and making up for my neurodivergence that I had none left do do anything useful after work. So essentially, only the "emergencies" (no clean clothes! no clean dishes! bills are due TODAY!) got done, and literally nothing else. I was living in a state of constant burnout, simply because I had to go to work every day. I recently was able to change my schedule to 3-4 longer shifts a week, so I get several days off now, which has helped somewhat. But it's still a significant challenge on the days I go to work. 7:02 This drives me crazy, too. The fact that I can forget what I'm doing WHILE I'm doing it just boggles my brain. It boggles the brains of other people, too. We can be having a conversation, and sometimes I'll get interrupted, and someone will notice and ask what I was about to say. I just have to tell them, "Sorry, I've had like 20 thoughts since then, and I have literally no idea."

I'm fairly certain it's been at least a year since I put away my laundry. The clean pile is a couple feet high and the cats sit atop it often.

Ok, I actually relate to the second last one, a lot Like, last week. I wanted to return some books I borrowed for the library. And Ok, first. I keep my library books, in two bags. One for "haven't read/finished", and one for "have read" And I usually keep both, near my bed. But for some reason, I put my "have read" bag, near my door Ok. So! I was going to the library, planning to return some books, and spend the afternoon there. For some reason, I forgot to put my binder on. So I went back to grab it, then went back to walking to the bus stop... Only to realize. I forgot my library books Why? Because I moved then from their spot. And even though I was constantly looking at them in their new spot, before I left. I forgot them

The name thing... I saw the perfect gif to represent how my brain handles names. It showed a piece of paper coming out of a printer and falling perfectly into a shredder. "Oh your name is _____? That's nice. *shred*"

I can 100% relate to the laundry one. *Currently have a pile of dried but unfolded laundry on the other side of his bed... and it's been there for 3 days* Ok in fairness I can relate to most of them. I also remember song lyrics from songs I haven't heard in a decade. WHY
@waffles3629 Жыл бұрын
I just gave up folding anything that's gonna be used within the next two weeks unless I need it to not be wrinkly. I organize into a laundry basket in separate 'piles' for pillowcases, PJs, towels, underwear, etc. That way it's not just a growing pile on the floor and I can find stuff relatively easily.
@AnimatronicBadgerlord Жыл бұрын
@@waffles3629I don't even have enough clothes for 2 weeks haha. I should get another basket though! That way it isn't just sitting on my bed.
@waffles3629 Жыл бұрын
@@AnimatronicBadgerlord oh, I pretty much have to wash every week or I'd also run out, the two week rule is just to force me to put away things I wear/use infrequently. Otherwise it just accumulates till I have a breakdown because I can't find anything.

The laundry thing is clearly wash > wash > wash > dry > empty dryer two days later > put laundry basket in hallway until someone else carries it upstairs > live out of laundry basket until it’s half empty > put away \o/

The laundry one, for me, would be: Wash…then wash again, because I put more dirty clothes into the washing machine BEFORE putting the clothes I just washed into the dryer (because I’ve forgotten about those).

The laugh and nodding/agreeing to the camera before saying what she thinks is so relatable. Because of ADHD I always notice how fast I think and sometimes my friends couldn't "keep up" with me. So the laughing at my own thoughts and nodding at what I think before saying it out loud is such a symptom.

I actually relate so hard to the “what i think…what people understand” one. It’s one of my biggest struggles especially in a committed relationship. A thought/feeling will make sense so well in my head and when i go ahead and try to express it, im completely lost with words and how to put it together so that someone can understand me. AND MOST OF THE TIME, ITS A VERY COMMON THOUGHT/FEELING.

Speaking of putting stuff in random places… Once I set my glasses down in a hanging organizer in the walk-in closet of an apartment. I so thoroughly lost them there that I went and got new glasses and then didn’t find the old ones until we moved from there. I still will put my glasses and phone down randomly, but it’s now more of a “they’re in one of these 10 places” kind of thing.

Yea, the captain planet one should've said "short term memory problems", or "working memory problems" but they were probably limited on space and had to straight up shorten it. Speaking of, I can remember the strangest, most random stuff from aeons ago. Like this one memory of my granpa pulling me along the beach in a red Ryder wagon. He died when I was six, so I couldn't have been any older than 4 at the time. Probably younger, tbh.

For me nothing, especially keys, has just one place to be. This allows my brain to have flexibility it craves and not the rigidness that it will destroy. You know the "This is the only way to do blah blah blah" that is so soul destroying when it doesn't work for you. That is me and "Everything has it's one place to be and you must put it back after you finish using it" rule which has never worked for more than 5 seconds with me before I have forgotten the solitary place something was meant to be because it no longer made sense for it to belong there. For example I often have 4 places that keys can be - In my pocket, on the table in the hall way (by the door), beside my computer (I'm in IT) or on my bedside table. This means I only have a small number of places to check before going into full panic mode thinking my keys have been left on a train or bus and then finding them on a different table that is on the way from the front door to the bathroom. :)

What trips me up about many chores is if it's a big chore, like cleaning an overflowing sink. I need to empty the sink in order to make use of the sink to clean the dishes, so the counters need cleaning and the trash bin needs emptying, and so many steps just to get TO the dishes. Nothing is particularly enjoyable, lots of repetitive movements that don't play nice with arthritis, why do The Big Chore when I could be doing anything else?
