Lea was 17 at that time :) That was a 3 day intensive audition process then was asked to go to London for the final Assessment. They started to look in the Uk, ended up empty handed, then search in The US, New York, L.A, Honolulu then they realised most of the girls who were really good either a Filipino or half Filipino so why not go to the Philippines instead so there they found Lea and 12 more Filipinos.

She was 17 when she first auditioned, 18 when they started rehearsing and 19 when the show started running. You have to understand that she was already a known child singer in the Philippines and was with Repertory Philippines. Her very first audition piece, she sang The Greatest Love Of All. And when asked to sing another song, she sang On My Own. This audition was probably the last one in London when they have to decide which of the two girls- Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson, both products of Repertory Philippines- would play the original KIm. Monique of course ended up as the understudy. There is a complete DVD of the making of the show.

I saw miss Saigon back in the early 90's in Broadway NYC when I was a kid. I teared up when she died at the end. She was phenomenal. It was like watching a live movie at front. I was blessed to see her playing as Kim not the other substitutes. One of the best Broadway show ever.

I remember watching the documentary of how this play was made and saw the different applicants for the role. None of them could hit the high notes the way Leah did. The look on their faces was proof that she bagged the role.

I also remember this documentary when it first came out and when Lea sang that song, especially the start, I just burst out crying it was so beautiful. I also had the privilege to see the show in London about 3 months after it opened and she was Kim on that night, and to date, it is one of my best ever nights at the theatre. She is an outstanding singer and her voice is nearly as pure now as it was back then.

If I'm not mistaken there was an interview by Lea where she explained the whole step until she was chosen. Hopefully you can find that interview because it's more complete.
