17:40 In 2002 the following was voted as the funniest joke in the world: Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says, "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence; then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says, "OK, now what?"

It might be a bit soon to watch it right after THIS, but you should definitely check out 'Monty Python Live (Mostly)'. It was a big reunion show they did back in 2014, with all 5 of the surviving members coming back to perform their most famous skits on stage, complete with musical numbers, new jokes, improv'd lines, flubbed lines, celebrity cameos and a huge repetoire of extras and dancers to turn every scene into a gigantic event. As said, it's basically the same thing you just watched here (a 'best of' of the show), so it may be too soon to do it, but it's absolutely worth a shot. It was great to see them all back together after so many years, revisiting so many of their greatest hits, all with a massive crowd laughing along every second.
@Deegee_1969 Жыл бұрын
It was good to see them all again, even more so now that two have shuffled off this mortal coil. This was my introduction to the Pythons, or stumbling onto the tv station whilst the dancing statue of Venus was being shown. I never knew what hit me, being doubled-up with laughter and I was hooked on their comedy from there on. The "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" show is the Pythons on stage doing their routines as usual, but with some audience participation thrown in sometimes. There are a couple of new sketches there too. Also, there's two episodes the Pythons did for German TV, and they do contain some new stuff.
@billbabcock1833 Жыл бұрын
This reaction was fun. My introduction to Python was this movie. Here in the US it wasn't on TV in 1971. Eventually they put reruns of the show on Public TV. I still have all of their vinyl albums.

I was introduced to Monty Python's Flying Circus shortly after it started appearing on a public television station here in Vermont in the mid 1970's. I was about 17 years old at the time. It became a weekly obsession for my friends and I. We would get toasted, and settle in for some of the strangest stuff we had ever seen on TV. I had seen Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, so I was a little used to weirdness in a TV show, but Monty Python even out weirded that show. You might want to check out Rowan & Martin at some point. They even had Richard Nixon on as a guest shortly before he became President.

It's from 1971 (while they were still making the TV show) and predates all their other films. I prefer the TV versions of all of these sketches. After you've completely exhausted the Python collection, you might enjoy some films by one of Cleese's inspirations, W.C. Fields. Cleese did a short tribute film pointing out that he was doing surreal "Pythonesque" bits long before they came along. Fields was often a rapscallion: smoking, swearing, getting revenge on small children. He was at his best when the studio wasn't meddling so much: It's A Gift and The Bank Dick are particular standouts. His late classic Never Give A Sucker An Even Break is his wildest, most surreal adventure. I have a particular fondness for The Bank Dick, because Fields creates this whole little cartoon town. Everyone there is as off-kilter as he is. You could combine comedy and westerns by doing My Little Chickadee, a film he shared star billing with Mae West (who I think wrote most of the script, apart from his own material).

It's really silly and fun. The whole thing is only two series so it might work for you, or maybe just do a couple. It's REALLY good and well thought of. And it's all Michael, all the time ❤

There is actually a sort of real-world contender for the funniest joke in the world, the joke that nobody can hear and live, and it has an indirect Python connection. Another comedy troupe who in various combinations worked with members of MP called "The Goodies" had a TV series that ran all through the 1970s. A man in Norfolk, Alex Mitchell, died from laughing watching a 1975 episode in which one of the Goodies demonstrates a "Lancastrian marital art" called ecky-thump that involves clubbing one's opponent with black puddings. (There are other accounts that credit the death to a sketch where someone wrestles with a bagpipe like it's a giant octopus, but the ecky-thump version is more reliably documented.)
