What a classic album. That chorus on "Doomsday" still hits differently now. May he continue to RIP. Dude had so many unreleased albums. Patiently waiting until his family sees fit. I can only imagine the pain. I've lost my mother recently, well 2021 but that shit doesn't go away. Only a bit easier to deal with. Still hurts. So a loved one, a partner, a father to your children, a best friend... I hope she and their children are doing ok.

By the way, MF DOOM was part of the Nuwaubian Nation, which is a new religious movement that is an off-shoot of the Five-Percent Nation of Gods and Earth. A lot of rappers were part of the same religious movements including Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, LL Cool J. A lot of the terminology in 90s hip-hop is derived from the teachings of these movements "God, Allah, word is bond, dropping science, break it down, represent, do the knowledge, mathematics". They call themselves 5 Percenters because they believe 10% of people in the world are the elites and their agents, 85% of people are ignorant and being controlled by the 10%, and 5% are the ones who have gained the knowledge and have been awakened. They believe that black people are the original people of planet Earth and are therefore "Gods". They also have the "Universal Language" which is made up of the "Supreme Alphabet" and "Supreme Mathematics" where they attribute numbers and letters to words with special meanings. So a lot of times when you might hear seemingly random numbers or words (knowledge, wisdom, culture, cipher, born, god) being thrown out, a lot of the times it's references to the supreme alphabet and mathematics.

Doomsday's scratching is a sample of BDP's (Boogie Down Productions) "South Bronx" 33:20 KMD, the group he was in with his brother and Onyx, had an album ready to be released. The record label did not like the political undertones on the album, and it got shelved after Subroc died. I see this skit as a reference to that. Record company interference with the artist 49:15 A lot of Wu Tang members have their own variation of the Wu Tang symbol. For example. Meth's is the symbol flipped, GZA's is the symbol shaped as a G, etc. So switching like the Wu Tang symbol. Being different but the same. Oh and about Grimm. He was the first MF (Mad Flows), and he financed this album as an executive producer. They got into some real personal stuff because of that 54:14 Muslims don't eat pork. Pork is in gelatin. New Muslims might be unaware. "Some would debate, wait the fella ate gelatin" means that the guy of the story was new, did not knew the code

hey bob! hope you get a chance to read this a few weeks ago, i translated Sobrevivendo no Inferno by Racionais Mc's in its entirety, 26 years after its release. the most influential brazilian rap album of all time. it became an obligatory read for college tests all over the country, was gifted to the pope by the mayor of são paulo, sold 1.5 million copies (and god knows how many pirated versions), and in almost three decades, had never gotten a full translation to english. but now it has. i welcome everybody in this comment section to take a peep at it, especially if you enjoy 90's rap -- "tô ouvindo alguém me chamar", 4th track of the album, is by far my favorite one. an 11 minute masterclass in writing that keeps you hooked from the very beginning until the last syllable; "diário de um detento", 7th track, inspired by the carandiru massacre, is a punch in the gut that does not hold back or sugarcoats any of the dirt of the penitentiary system; "capítulo 4, versículo 3", 3rd track has a beat that could change a man's life this album is great. it's raw, it's real, it doesn't hold back. don't go into it expecting clever metaphors or complicated verbose language. what has to be said is said, and it's said the way it is. please, i'd love for any of yall to check out and give a chance to brazilian rap. it would be a pleasure i've sent you an email with a pdf of all the translated lyrics if you ever want to check that out!

"Switch like the Wu Tang Symbol" is referencing the fact that each Wu member has a modified version of the Wu "W" as their logo. For instance, Method Man's logo is the W upside down. Genius is rotated 90º with an extra piece to make the descender. Inspectah Deck is also a rotated W to make an "E" in Deck.

In addition to just being a flat out incredible album, the backstory to this album is amazing too. His brother Sub Roc passed away, KMD was dropped from their label... leading Zev Love X to disappear and become a recluse. Years later he re-emerges from the depths as a metal faced supervillain and the MF Doom persona is born. This album and the 12" singles leading up to it are where this all started.

I love that you see the bittersweet tone in ‘?’ on first listen. I’d recommend the music video which actually shows that pic of his brother he’s talking about

Apparently when this came out DOOM worked on some of this at DJ Stretch Armstrong’s pad using his equipment. Stretch Armstrong thought he was nuts for sampling rap songs because people didn’t do that back then. He also worked on some of it around the “CM Crew” in Manhattan. People like The Beatnuts and Heiro would visit Kirious’ pad and while they were in there partying and acting wild DOOM was off in the corner working on this masterpiece and participating at the same time. From what people that was around said about him, I got that they thought DOOM would’ve made this album even if it never came out. Making these songs was like breathing for DOOM. Good thing for us it did come out along with everything that followed! About the mask…….he only wears it while he performs or is “in character”. A lot of times he hangs out at venues he performs without the mask and no one knows it’s him. Essentially he’s a rock star with the mask and without it he’s an every day person, and I think that’s the perk of using the mask.

The very first DOOM album. I remember just picking it up on a whim back in in 2000 and was like meh .. it's ok ...But I played it more and more and it just necak an earworm and then I really listen and I was hooked.

although it would be call to do the whole diss track thing in one video, going along as it happens is part of the fun of it + not even for views but you are such a good reactor when it comes to lyric analysis so it would be perfect

I think there's an early demo of either Gas Drawls or Dead Bent you can find under his earlier alias "Zev Love X" that has him sounding even younger. It's weird to hear the song that way.

MF DOOM is one of the few classic 90’s-early 2k’s rappers who have actually stayed relevant till today. It just shows how timeless and formative his stuff is.

People know who Doom is, he's Zev love X of KMD. His mentor is MF Grimm and his influence is Ghostfacekillah It was just shocking to come up with such a scheme because although he's underground as KMD the mask pushed him beyond popularity he asked for.
