My dad said that in the early 60s, right after he got out of the Air Force, he went to see Redd Foxx at a club. Dad was the only white person in the room, Foxx went off on him for twenty minutes, and it was the funniest thing he’s heard in his whole life. In fairness, he had the audience applaud my dad for being such a good sport, bought him a drink, and talked with him for a few, minutes after the show.

Back in the day when stores were closed on Sundays, random relatives “would come to call” whether they got along family members they were visiting or not! I hadn’t thought of this in years but my Dad had a female cousin who would randomly visit who he really didn’t like very much & they would trade insults like this back & forth, it was hysterical! 😅😂

Yes and no... I think it was originally ignited on "I Love Lucy" between Fred and Ethel. However, it was raised to a whole new level on The Dick Van Dyke show between Buddy and Mel. Mel still played more of a straight man but by the end of the series, he was slicing up Buddy just as much. Buddy was relentless! I think Fred and Esther were influenced by both productions and blended them into their own, which was then blatantly copied by the ones you listed.

There's a famous old photo of them, Redd is graciously sevring LaWanda a drink. It shows how much they really loved each other. It's intriguing to watch the reactions of people young enough to be my own children and appreciating the hilariousness of this show. As you can see, Redd Foxx and La Wanda Page had unmatched chemistry on the screen. This show proved to be the death knell for The Brady Bunch, which simply couldn't match this sitcom for true humour.

Sanford and Son is my favourite transfer of a British show to the US. The interplay between Fred and Esther was fabulous.

My mom wouldn't let us kids watch Sanford and Son when it first came on television. She heard a record album of his comedy a few years before, and thought it would not be good for children to watch. She said "that Redd Foxx has the filthiest mouth I ever heard!". I said they won't let him talk like that on tv, mom. She watched one episode to make sure it was "not filthy" before she allowed us to watch. My mom was a lot like Aunt Esther..very religious. She loved the show as much as kids. Redd Foxx was a riot! LOL!

I hope you can view these great comedy clips knowing the fact that Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page were childhood friends and Redd insisted on LaWanda auditioning for the role of Aunt Esther

Sanford and Son was based on a British TV comedy, Steptoe and Son, which ran from 1962 to '65, then '70 to '74, and centered on a father-and-son junkyard business in London.

Redd & LaWanda were great friends in real life and he the writers create "Esther" for LaWanda, that's why they almost always had to take a second while doing their sparring as they would constantly make each other laugh or see who could make the other break character.

I grew up with these shows, you guys are around my son's age. So cool that you are exploring this history of television. Grady is a spin off of this show as well. Also check out Soap & Benson. When my son was 16 I introduced him to soap and we watched it together all the time. Great Stuff. Golden Girls and Betty White..hall of fame stuff there. I enjoy your channel , thanks for laughing!!

The series was an adaptation of a British comedy series called Steptoe and son. The British series had two actors who portrayed comedic characters and it showed in the tone of the series that constantly swayed from comedy to tragedy. With Sanford and son, it was played by comedians and played for laughs as well as expanding to included Aunt Esther, Grady and Bubba. They were two different shows but Sanford is a rare successful adaptation of a classic British comedy.

Yes,..yes the 70's were hopping, yes Norman Lear, seemed like everything he touched was gold,..so many stars, you mentioned all those heavy hitter shows,..my folks knew about Redd Foxx, he had been a comedian for a long while before this show, I'd hear mom say, this was tame for him, he did a lot of swearing, and really, really dirty jokes in his stand up,..but ohh God when we would watch this show, we couldn't wait til Ester showed up, we knew once she showed, the fireworks would be abound,..lol,..and Foxx use to crack me up when he went looking for his reading glasses,..drawer of a thousand glasses, would crack me up, and the irony of it, as I got older, I started buying those cheap glasses, until I finally broke down and went to see a REAL, eye doctor, and got the real glasses I needed,..now granted, I never had a drawer full of thousands of cheap Walgreens glasses,..but I was getting there, a spare in the car, one or two at my bedside, one in my purse,..I very nearly turned into Fred Sanford in that respect,..do keep going,..this show was a riot, Foxx was brilliant, had a long standing act in Vegas,..yes there's so much more, do keep going,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

The 70s was a decade if a lot of extrene social change for the world and definitely in America. I was a kid in the 70s and a teen to 20s in the 80s. The 70s began a rapid switch over from Traditional Family Values spiked by the Socal Trauma from the Vietnam War, Women's Liberation Movement, The Gay Movement and a drastic normalization of Divorce as socially acceptible. This is why we saw a lot of Sitcoms and other shows being focused on these social topics.. sort of as Change Agents to push along the Social Engineering that was taking place implemented by those "Ruling the World". This still happens today.. Movies, TV and Socail Media are used to influence psychological change, which leads to change in peoples opinions and actions, within the world's population. It was long ago proven very effective to use "Programming"... to implement socail change. Great videos guys!!
