It's hard to understate how badly this movie flopped in the '80s. This was back in the day when people thought cartoons were strictly for children, and doubly so for Disney cartoons, so when this film came out, parents freaked because it was so dark and gruesome. If Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg hadn't taken over as President and VP of Disney right then, it's likely the studio would have shut down the entire animation department.
@mstorrboy Жыл бұрын
It almost broke the animation department from what I've heard elsewhere. It's too bad, I loved the imagery in this movie.

@@mstorrboy There's a great book called Disney War by James B. Stewart about Eisner's tenure at the studio, and it begins with The Black Cauldron fiasco. The board was ready to shut down the animation department when Eisner and Katzenberg took over. Instead Eisner hit upon the idea of creating a TV division that would keep animators busy while movies were in pre-production, then he and Katzenberg took the animators on a retreat where they brainstormed the ideas for Little Mermaid, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Some call this one of Disney's worst films, but I'd say it's one of their most underrated. And you think it's surprisingly dark now? They actually had to remove 12 minutes of scenes that were even darker. A portion of it was found and showed a guy's skin melting off. They probably made the right call.
@HeathsHarleyQuinn Жыл бұрын
They weren't 'removed'. The people in charge of the animation dept RIPPED THEM UP like ASSHOLES. It was most certainly not the right call.

I loved seeing this as a child, but you’re right. This was the final box office failure before the Disney renaissance. On the one hand, their following movies turn Disney into the modern power house that it is. But on the other, they did dark fantasy really well in this movie. Had it been successful, then Disney could have really varied their story telling style over the years.
@jamesplunkett8912 Жыл бұрын
I found news on how this made people run out of theaters with their young children screaming 😱 for their life's. The way they did this movie was changed for a good reason. That's why this is Disney's first rated PG movie 🎬.
@wespauls90202 ай бұрын
Unfortunately those 12 minutes were because Katzenberg, who Disney had just hired, demanded that those be removed. He had no understanding of how animation works, but because he was in charge the animators had to do what he said. Apparently they had cut some stuff under his direction, but he still wasn't satisfied so he ripped even more frames and scenes out himself. The "too scary" thing seems more like an excuse for the real reason, that being an arrogant suit walked in and ripped it up himself because he thought he knew better than the people making it. Not trying to be a downer, but sadly that's the case for this movie.

Black Cauldron was the first Disney animated film released to use CGI, however I think a lot of what you guys thought was CG actually wasn't. For example all the smoke effects were real footage of dry ice mist, and the stormy sky I believe was an optical effect but I can't find confirmation of that. From what I've read CG was mainly used for fire, bubbles, Eilonwy's orb, and the certain shots of the cauldron. The film was pretty much half done by the point they decided to incorporate CG. One of the producers had seen the clock tower sequence being worked on in The Great Mouse Detective and wanted that team to do some effects for Black Cauldron.

I loved this movie as a kid, even if it scared the crap out of me as a kid. I did get more critical though as I got older (Taran is insufferable) and then I read the books, but I still love it. "The Chronicles of Prydain" are written by Lloyd Alexander, who was inspired by legends like King Arthur and wanted to create his own. This movie uses bits and pieces of the first two books in the series, "The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron," which is why at times the story seems to be lacking details. I highly recommend reading the book series, because you'll get the full story of Taran and Eilonwy, and the country of Prydain.

Yeah, I've always wished that Prydain would get more attention. Lloyd Alexander received the Newberry Honor for The Black Cauldron and the Newberry Medal for The High King. I'd be totally on board with the series getting a proper movie/TV treatment.

Another bookseries of his that would make an awesome movie or movies is the Westmark novels - the Wikipedia article says the country it's set in is supposed to be Not-France, but IIRC Alexander said it was meant to be one of many small kingdoms and princedoms of the divided Germany of the 15th through 18th century. Which explains why the main character can cross it in a few days and not weeks.

It's actually based on the first 2 of the 5 books of the Chronicals of Prydain that were kind of mashed together, which meant it really rushed through and simplified a lot of story elements and characterization. I loved this movie. I had a couple copies before the frikkin housefire. Now I can’t find a copy. I even had a dog named Gurgi when I was a kid. The restaurant next to Dumbo used to me called Gurgi’s Munchies& Crunches.

I loved that you both got to see this one. I saw it in the theater when it was originally released. I remember mostly waiting in line for it and later it being a little scary. I was only six. But the event of being in a theater and all the colors on screen was what I remember most. I didn't really follow the story really, I was overwhelmed just being immersed in the cinema experience. The musky smell of the popcorn, the stick floors from all the spilled soda, and trying to see over the head of the person in front of you. It was a pretty small theater but to me it was enormous. This movie didn't do very well at the box office, if I remember correctly, to justify the big budget. Also, I think Don Bluth had already left Disney with some of the other animators so it put a ton of pressure on the remaining animators. Bluth made a few epic movies but my favorite is The Secret of NIMH. The animation in that movie is amazing too.

Taran and Eilonwy always gave me Link and Zelda vibes. Plus Eilonwy's little light ball is clearly a fairy and the Magic Sword remind me of the Magic Sword from Zelda 1

I remember seeing this when I was young. To this day I've always said this is the scariest and darkest Disney cartoon ever. It well it doesn't scare me anymore like it did back when I first saw it but you get my drift. Still an amazing movie, animation, and story.

This Christmas, you guys should definitely watch Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009). It has animation that will blow your mind!

The Horned King was the Disney Villain that gave me Nightmares. Everything about him scared me, and I was only like 3 or 4 years old when I saw the movie in VHS especially at night

notes from the books: In the books Dallben has sticks with symbols or letters on them. When he places them in front of Hen Wen she points with her nose to different symbols, that Dallben then reads to determine the prophecy. There are two groups of bad guy soldiers. The cauldron born, and the Huntsmen. The Huntsmen travel in small groups. when you kill one the others gain the dead one's strength. Eilonwy is quite a snippy girl in the books. Dallben is an enchanter. The books are inspired by Welsh mythology.

I love how much you appreciate the older animations. I've always found this to be such an underrated film! It also makes me laugh because my cat doesn't pay much attention to the TV but whenever I put this on she always watches the fairies and tries to catch them 😂

I love this movie to death. Fun cinema fact, the voice actor who narrates at the beginning of the black cauldron is also the voice of Gandalf from The Hobbit animated movie from the 70s

The animation looked so good because this is when Don Bluth worked for Disney. IIRC, this might have been the film that caused him to break off on his own. There was no CGI in this film, as it was LOOoooong before the concept of CGI. I think Beauty and the Beast was one of the first Disney films to really use CGI. Once the film flopped, Disney basically buried it and that's why it's so hard to find or even hear about. There was the Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour in Tokyo that ran from 86 - 06 and featured an animatronic Horned King from Black Cauldron in the climax of the ride.

I don’t think Don Bluth was involved with Black Cauldron, he left Disney in 1979 with his last contribution was being an animator for _The Fox and the Hound_
