Danny DeVito was the perfect choice to voice The Lorax, every one of his line lands perfectly. And "How bad can I be?" Is a great villain song. Though I wish they had kept in "Biggering" instead.

This film could have been incredible if they kept the original script. It was originally meant to be a much darker film. It had a more serious tone, The Onceler was a full on villain, Ted's goal wasn't about a girl, and the songs were amazing. The Studio executives nipped that in the bud because it made them look bad. Listen to the demo/storyboard of the song "Biggering" and you'll see what the film could have been.

That's what adaptations are for. They convey the same messages as the original but do it in a different way.

U must know guys there's an alternate version of "how bad can i be" called "biggering" way more darker than HBCIB possibly the reason it never ended in the final film. If the movie is already a capitalism critic, the song is a punch to the face. In HBCIB the Once tries to convince himself that he's not doing anything bad, he's just becoming rich. In Biggering he KNOWS what he's doing but he says that's how nature works and "every creature that doesn't adapt just gets eaten" is not just a capitalism critic but shows how cold hearted blind ambition works. It's just too dark, he just doesn't matter anymore for anyone, he knows the damage and is able to k1ll a baby just for keep getting bigger. U should totally listen it. ❤️

Yes, the flashback was practically the entire story in the book. This "kid" is spoken of briefly in the book, in the second person, so the story is actually told as someone telling you what will happen if you ask the Once-ler these things. They made up most of the rest of the present-day stuff.

I agree it has it’s moments and I did enjoy the Once-ler’s story and his encounter/history with The Lorax and the creatures (the Swans, Humming Fish, Barbaloots) which personally is the main highlight of the film that the majority reactive positively too (even if the message and the ending was on the nose). Even Illumination does a very good job on the animation by capturing the Dr. Seuss aesthetic on the looks of the characters for this film and _The Grinch (2018),_ but personally I think Blue Sky Studios did it 10x better with capturing the animation of Dr. Seuss on their adaptation of _Horton Hears A Who._

Its almost poetic that studio meddling prevented this movie from being *much* darker and taking itself more seriously like the original In fact, the Onceler's original song for this movie, that was cut down in the actual release, was *much* darker and more thought provoking as it suggested that his main flaw , and the reason why he went as far as he did, wasn't his *greed* but rather the grandad of all human flaws: *pride* Which honestly fits much more into what they were going for with the Onceler in this movie. His family treated him like garbage, so he developed an inferiority complex. So once he realised that he had an idea that could actually make him rich and famous, he took it to make sure *everyone* respected him. But he went too far and lost everything. Obviously, this is a far cry from the original Onceler who wasn't intended to be sympathised with, have a backstory or even a face. The Onceler was simply the personification of human selfishness and the idea was that *anyone* could be the Onceler. But, still, this could have been an interesting take had the people making the movie not had their creative process meddled with.

Here’s a fun fact both of you will be surprised but Danny DeVito who voiced the Lorax also reprised his role in the Spanish (both European and Latin Spanish), German, Italian and Russian dubs of the movie. Which is amazing considering some celebrity actors especially those of Hispanic or Latino descent who appeared in the animated movies and voiced a specific character only would reprise their roles in one or two other languages besides the original English version (e.g. Antonio Banderas reprising as Puss in Boots in the European and Latin Spanish dubs of the _Shrek/Puss In Boots_ movies; Gael García Bernal reprising as Héctor in the Latin American dub of _Coco)._

There is a theory and it's one of my favorite theories is Ted is Onceler's grandson. When he was younger and before he became corrupted by greed her met Norma and they feel in love. Then when things got really bad and the pollution started happening, she was pregnant at the time with their daughter (Ted's mom) so he sent her away to Theendsvile so they could be safe. That's how Grandma knew so much about him and why she was able to tell Ted all that information and not only that he kinds looks like Onceler when he was young. They have a striking resemblance. It all makes sense when ya think about it.

But then after some time listening to The Once-lers's story he starts to develop genuine care for the importance of trees and in the end makes it his mission to plant the seed for not just Audrey but for The Once-ler and the betterment of Thneedville.

I agree with other sit isn't perfect, but this was one of those movies that had its charm and was perfect to watch during babysitting. I think for me besides the main lesson what stood out was the smaller lessons. Like just because they are blood doesn't make them your family, or that they know whats best for you. Dont let family push you around and change you. Anyone can be a villain, especially if they go down a dark path involving greed. Etc. Once-ler started off compromising and doing whats right, but the gratifying feeling of his family approving of him and seemingly caring about him pushed him. O'hare saw a need and wanted to fill it with his air, but immediately fell into the gratifying greed hole. Ted was fearless despite threats, yeah for a girl, but motivation only goes so far when threats are involved. Much could have been done in the movie, but I still love it.

While it isn’t a perfect film or one of Dr. Seuss Best adaptations, I still appreciate what Illumination did for their first animated adaptation of a Dr. Seuss story even if the message was on the nose and far different to the original book and the 1972 animated special. On top of that, It’s also impressive with how Illumination almost captures the Dr. Seuss aesthetic through its animation even if Horton Hears a Who from Blue Sky did it better and the voice cast is impressive as you have Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zach Effron, Taylor Swift, Jenny Slate, Rob Riggle and the late Betty White (RIP) Although the both of you will be doing _Flushed Away_ next week, hopefully if you do continue watching more Dr. Seuss adaptations I recommend the following: _The Cat in the Hat_ starring Mike Myers (even though most would be against it), _Horton Hears a Who_ from Blue Sky Studios, _The Grinch (2018)_ also by Illumination, the original animated specials of _Horton_ and _The Grinch_ by Chuck Jones, and the original Animated specials of _The Lorax_ and _The Cat in the Hat_ by DePatie-Freleng productions.

The reason the world is as messed up as it is- is that they've made us feel like there's no point in fighting because they win no matter what. That oil companies, textile companies, companies that are over-farming and polluting, they all get away with it because only a few people care, imagine if everyone cared a lot? And actually rallied together to stand up to them. Those who are the most passionate, like Greta Thunberg, get ridiculed and people fall for that ridicule. Which is exactly what they want. It's not going to get better, it's not. *Unless* people actually get their shit together and do something. People have forgotten the power of the masses, we used to be able to dethrone kings and topple dictators. We need some of that energy back tbh. Yeah yeah preachy I know I know, but if what I say makes you feel uncomfortable it's because in your heart you know it's true.

I watched Lorax in High School and I liked it🔥. The animation was great. At the ending I loved the animation shown on how the plant grew and the transition etc. The message was really good. This movie was a huge hit in my house when my kids were younger because the music is so fun. I never read the book so I didn’t mind if it wasn’t faithful it was just fun for young kids and has catchy songs. The overall theme was still good in my opinion.

I have read mny Dr. Suess books when i was a kid and my kids (especially my youngest) loved Dr. Suess books too. The Lorax was her favorite book for a long time and when she watched this movie she loved it. So it might be more nostalgia for me but i love this movie and the songs. Danny Devito was perfect for the Lorax. It has been awhile since i have watched this movie, but when it is on i watch it.

As expected there's alot of people mentioning "biggering" the cut/rewritten alternative to "how bad ban I be" Listening to your perspective about how this movie is more simple and light hearted i can kinda see why it was changed, but at the same time the Change affected the message and basically removed any accountability onceler should've had for his actions by portraying him as being ignorant and manipulated by his family.

the onceler took accountability for his actions. he said multiple times throughout the movie that everything was his fault. he knew it and accepted it. that is accountability. perhaps you mean he never faced consequences for his actions? imo, he did though. he lived the rest of his life isolated, cut off from society. whether by his own choice or because people no longer accepted him, that is the consequence of his actions. if you feel he should have been punished further, well... i just don't agree. people don't always need severe punishment after making mistakes, even serious ones. punishment is meant for people who don't accept accountability or acknowledge their mistake, in order to help them recognize the severity of the situation. the onceler didn't need additional punishment, he already knew how awful what he'd done was, and thoroughly punished himself for it. but i do agree that some of the other changes effected the message too much.

Fun fact: How Bad Can I Be was originally a different song called Biggering. It treated the subject matter a lot more seriously and cut a little deeper about the realities of big business - which people theorise is the reason it got cut in favour of this song, which basically turns it into a joke and seriously underplays how serious the subject matter is. Because the book is straight-up depressing - it's VERY serious and very dark. The book ends with the message of "Unless", and we don't see what happens after. This film is very tonally off for what the book was trying to do, and Biggering could've fixed a lot of that. Highly recommend looking Biggering up - you can find it on KZbin. It's vastly superior to the song that ended up in the movie.

It was sophomore year in high school that was the first and last time that I’ve seen this movie in horticulture class! I don’t remember anything what happened in this movie until now I remember the O’Hare Air thing and the trees being chopped off for making something which is “Thneed”. Another thing I remember learning in horticulture was topiary and we ended up watching “Edward Scissorhands afterwards because it shows all the topiary with many artificial, decorative shapes in the movie which is cool, I love that movie! And I know you guys have already seen that one, so loved that reaction:)

Maybe give Horton Hears a Who a try next. Both that and this movie are so so good in my opinion, wished you liked this more than you did but that's ok lol. I love The Lorax as someone with a degree in conservation, and also personally knowing so many people who are similar to the Onceler I find it to be a fabulous movie. (Gosh, you must have missed the Tumblr days where girls were going RABID over the Onceler lmao that was a wild time). Horton Hears a Who isn't a conservation movie but still has a very important message that maybe you'd feel a little stronger about than this one.

Another Suess movie where they made another story based off the original. When the older version of the Oncler ryhmes he does make a few direct references, the start with the snail line is from the original writings. I dont mind the changes too much I just look at it as different telling of the story, they worked the orginal stuff in it well and then added fun pandering to make a movie. I love that they use the Suess excuse to come up with these crazy worlds and buildings since that was very suess in itself. You can love both if youre willing to accept to that this a movie made by fans based off of the characters and base story of the book and that the book is a book written by an absolute legend and you should give a read if you ever get the chance

Everything related to Thneedville and it's politics was embellishment. I recommend that you guys watch the original '72 animated version of The Lorax to get the story without the embellishment. I recently learned from one of my friends that Dr. Seuss used to live in La Jolla, which is about 15 minutes from where I live. The truffula trees/Seussian trees were inspired by some of the palm trees that grow in that area! And when you said the elderly Onceler looked like Scrooge, that reminded me that the Grinch and his whole story was based on a cranky old lady neighbor of Dr. Seuss who complained of the noise she heard from the top of the high hill surrounded by cliffs leading down to La Jolla beach. He often participated in community celebrations down there, and she often griped about the loud noises from revelers that she could hear from her lavish house up in the hills like the Grinch. Bah, humbug indeed.

I respect the people who enjoy this movie, but I personally prefer the original animated version. It's shorter, and follows the book exactly. The thing is, the original Lorax story isn't quite "simple." The original story is dark, with very little actual humor, and with a very open ending that actually requires the viewers to think. This one, to me, kind of panders to the younger audience, force-feeding them the message while also trying to entertain them and thus taking away from the message. It LOOKS good, but...yeah, I prefer the original. Which I would love for you guys to react to, actually.

@@k.o.h3599 it did for a while, but then we took out critical thinking from schools and from the mid 1980s to now we've steadily become less and less able to use critical thinking... all while at the same time like sheep voted into office people who would bend, break, and make rules to favor select corporations In losing our nuance we literally became the extremes presented as the wrong way to think in the book So I would argue the book is more correct and needed today than 40 years ago

i liked aspects of this movie, but it definitely isn't a favorite. i much prefer Horton Hears a Who as far as more recent Dr Seuss adaptations go. enjoyed the reaction though! :)
