What is your favorite book to film adaptation of all time??
@shadowfauxe6468 Жыл бұрын
YA book alone, Definitely The Maze Runner. There have been a lot of YA to Film adaptions, but most of them have failed to entertain me the same way the books have. But The Maze Runner delivers. While not as "by the books" as other book adaptations, Its non stop action, its character development/morals/relationships, cast, and over all premise, seem to win me over every time.

If we’re talking any book to film adaptations, then The Chronicles of Narnia for sure. Unfortunately I watched the movies before I knew the books existed, but I love the movies and the books equally. Now if we’re talking just YA novels I really liked Hunger Games and I still haven’t read the books yet, but I actually gotta go with The Maze Runner. Yes book 2 compared to the movie is almost completely different but I absolutely love both the books and the films.

Spoilers for the book: This franchise really struggles with all the changes they made from the books. The books have an almost completely different plot. The first movie follows the books more but it still took a lot of liberties. They cut out a lot of backstory for Newt as well that really makes his character better. They also make Thomas much more of a leader than he is. Thomas doesn't lead the group, its actually Minho and Newt that lead the group. Of course, Thomas is very important but they play up his role a lot more in the movies. Also Minho never gets kidnapped. Newt also doesn't hide his infection from the others because Wicked just tells him and everyone else that he is infected. His death is so heartbreaking in the books because it is really drawn out. Newt also leaves the group willingly to go with the other infected so he doesn't infect anyone in the city. Brenda and Jorge are immune in the books as well. Thomas is also not the cure. There isn't a cure. I feel like the movies are fun but they do change a lot. Newt's Backstory: Newt was originally a runner but he started to think that there was no way out of the maze. So, he goes in to the maze one day and climbs one of the walls and jumps off. Alby finds him (In a deleted scene they say it was Minho but it is Alby in the books). Obviously, Newt survives the fall but his leg is permanently damaged. He walks with a limp. The limp is shown a few times in deleted scenes but it much more prominent in the book. Thomas watches that happen to Newt which is what prompts him to tell Wicked to send him into the Maze. Thomas forgets all of that when they take his memories. Newt is also the older brother of one of the girls (Sonya) from the other maze. She is the one with the blond hair that's shown at the end. Newt does actually remember her towards the end because the flare sort of gives him his memories back. Sorry that was a lot but I felt like it was necessary information.

How could Newt ask him to do something like this? How could he possibly kill one of his best friends? "Kill me or I'll kill you. Kill me! Do it!" "Newt..." "Do it before I become one of them!" "I..." "KILL ME!" And then Newt's eyes cleared, as if he gained one last trembling gasp of sanity, and his voice softened. "Please, Tommy, Please." You all can knock that skyscraper jump to pool all you want. That was an epic shot. The way the camera followed them out the window and down into the pool, making you feel like you were jumping with them, so good! And the ending WAS necessary for the visuals and that beautiful score, if ONLY for that, it was necessary! (Also Thomas wouldn't be Thomas if he didn't go back and try to save everybody, he did the SAME thing in the books!) I swear this movie was such a treat for the film school nerds. The books were great but love these movies. The cinematography alone was worth it. Also you all just completely missed the big picture morality questions of the movie. Like we just went through a pandemic, were losing 10s of 1000s of people a day across the world at one point and are well on our way to 7 mil deaths worldwide but you can't fathom why Teresa would make the decisions she made? We all knew she was going to die in the end. Nobody's sharing a bunk with her in the safe haven. WCKD was wrong but they were wrong because their extreme experimentation broke every human rights law in the book. They were scientists doing the job the world expected them to do, find a cure to save everyone. I feel like this was a missed opportunity to have a semi-serious little discussion and some of you seemed to want to talk about the bigger 'issues' but the rest were just busy talking about how much they hated Teresa.

Very true. These films are incredible productions. I feel they'll be regarded as classics someday. The multi-layered story, the acting, the direction, the cinematography, the score .... What is even more amazing is that they were done "on-the-cheap." You'd never know it! $157 million for all three films when the average "big picture" film is at least $100 million. And from a first-time director, as well. They're an incredible accomplishment, really. Everyone involved with them should feel immensely proud. While the books are YA, the films are very adult. Many profound themes are explored. A central theme being "does the end justify the means?" It's a principle often associated with totalitarianism, and the phrase has its origin with Machiavelli, although the idea is much older. The principle is part and parcel of consequentialism, a teleological theory that says whether an action is morally good or bad depends on its outcomes. The more good outcomes outnumber the bad, the better/more moral the action. In that view, it's sort of a moral calculus. Under this rubric if WCKD finds a cure, then WCKD is very good, indeed. Therea/WCKD adhere to this end-means principle rigidly. This principle is, unfortunately, a too common belief today. It allows people to believe their actions are justified regardless of how they go about achieving the desired end result. It allows for all sorts of aberrant behaviors. A rather trivial example of this is the following scenario: My end is to get a certain work promotion. To get it, I work to sabotage all the other candidates. Hopefully, we agree that's not a nice way to behave. This is essentially the viewpoint of WCKD and Theresa, although they are dealing with an end of much greater significance. Accordingly, WCKD and Theresa are totally ruthless in their pursuit of a cure. Thomas, on the other hand, believes that the means are just as important, or, maybe, even more important, than the end. His viewpoint is if the means are morally objectionable in themselves, then this outweighs any potential benefit from the end. In other words, the "how" is at least as important as the "why." Thomas, just like WCKD, wants to find a cure to the Flare, he's only opposed to how WCKD does it. Thomas is willing to sacrifice himself to obtain a cure and save humanity. He's not willing, however, to sacrifice the unwilling. Theresa's/WCKD's morality is relativistic and man-centric, whereas Thomas' morality is based on absolute principles and God-centric. Even so, the trilogy challenges both WCKD's and Thomas' perspective, and makes us wonder which one is "right." I'm reminded of Pilate when he said: "What is truth?" We have man's truth, and we have God's Truth. Theresa was so wedded to WCKD that she couldn't live in a world without it. That's why she chose to die with WCKD as it were. Also, I think she felt that by saving Thomas, she and WCKD had accomplished their objective. Job done, WCKD is good! Likewise, Thomas, by not remaining in the Safe Haven, is determined to finish WCKD's objective, even if it means his death. Thomas represents a more enlightened WCKD.

Nice reaction guys To be honest I'm surprised you guys didn't enjoy this one that much. Yes they deviate from the books a bit and I'm the first one to be upset by that sort of thing but these three movies including this last one for me are very well made. Jumping out of a window, explosions, yes there is a lot of crazy stuff going on but if you look at the story, the attention to detail, the overall quality of the film it works very well. Better than it has any right to. I mean it's not a documentary, even the maze itself was unbelievable so you do have to suspend belief. I'm not saying these are academy award level movies but they set out to do something and they do it well from beginning to end, with ethical questions, strong themes and for me great use of exposition. Difficult to fault in my opinion within that context. Way better than the Hunger Games for example. There are some real emotional moments in this series and Newt's death was dealt with very well. All characters had a decent arc and change by the end. Even Teresa. It's not perfect but it's very good when it had no business being that good. I watch this series once a year and don't ever get bored of it. But that's just me. But anyway, great video.
@wilhelm-z4t7 ай бұрын
I'm not impressed by the reaction. This film is a science-fiction action film. In fiction you are often required to accept a premise which you would never accept in the real world. In a genre like science fiction, there are scientific/technological elements in the story which you would not believe in your everyday world. Even in a more real-world genre such as action movies, the action routinely goes beyond the boundaries of what you think could really happen. Think of all those crazy car chases or those pistols that never run out of bullets, for example. Along these lines, anyone watching this film has to also realize: 1) It's a dramatic film, and it's allowed artistic/dramatic license and 2) it's science fiction, not science fact. The viewer also must be able to separate his reality from the film's reality. There's a both a suspension of belief and disbelief. Artistic license allows characters to jump from tall buildings into a pool of water and survive uninjured. Many great action films have scenes like this. Now, If instead of falling into the pool, they flew like Superman, then they'd be violating the viewer's suspension of disbelief. As long as a film is consistent within its universe, the viewer has no cause to complain.

Some differences between the movie and the book: 1. In the movie, only Teresa is seen as a traitor, but in the books she and Aris are the traitors. 2. Brenda and Jorge work for W.I.C.K.E.D. more help Thomas and friends and Brenda and Jorge in the books are immune. 3. Thomas and Teresa kiss shortly before her death in the film, but this kiss does not exist in the Death Cure book. Including, in the movie, she falls along with the building, in the book, the building collapses on top of her. 4. Despite Thomas' crush on Teresa, in the books he shows a certain amount of affection for Brenda. He is noted in the final scenes of The Death Cure as showing affection from her without the rejection of Tomas sometimes. In the movies, only two scenes demonstrate this. One of the scenes is the exchange of glances in the Cranks' tunnel when she saves him. Another is the connection where she cries when Thomas tells her to leave without him. But at the end of the book it is implied that the two end up together, but in the film Thomas apparently has no relationship with anyone at the end other than his eternally beloved Teresa. 5. In the movie "Death Cure", Gally says he was rescued by the Right Arm, but in the book he was rescued by WICKED and inside he found a Right Arm spy and followed instructions to be expelled from WICKED. 6. In the books, Newt runs away from Thomas and leaves a note written: "Kill me. If you are really my friend. Kill me." Then Thomas finds him and then Newt begs him to kill him before he becomes a full crank. Thomas kills him with a headshot. 🥲

i never liked teresa all that much even in the books, but to be fair thomas and her feelings for each other and his difficulty in letting her go made more sense in the books because for a large chunk of the story they were telepathically connected and could talk to each other in their minds, so we got to see a lot more of their conversations and their general dynamic explored more. i have no idea why they left that out in the movies, it would have helped their relationship make a little more sense and possibly even make teresa a little more sympathetic to the audience. i enjoyed the movies because i thought of them more as another series _inspired by_ tmr, rather than an adaptation of tmr because of how much the second and third movies split off from the storyline in the books; which were definitely far superior to the movies, despite the top tier casting the movies had. but hey, that's just how movie adaptations go sometimes. very hit or miss, and almost always hated by (or generally upsetting to) the book lovers who got to experience the story in its optimal form. i think mostly we just feel frustrated that movie watchers who don't like to read/have no interest in trying to read the books will never really get to know the full/real story, just the bastardization of it via cinema. it is what it is tho lmao

Teresa is less worthy in the books. Are we just going to bypass all the ways she backstabbed and tortured Thomas? Even kissing other dudes in front of him? In the movies, she's practically a nun.
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF Жыл бұрын
@@xejelah i never said she was worthy or a good person in either version. my point was that there was more context and build up for their relationship in the books, so it was more believable that they even had anything between them to begin with. they said after watching the movies they felt like there was never really anything there between thomas and teresa, so basically my comment was confirming that it was definitely a case of the director/writers cutting it down so much and leaving out important aspects.

as someone who's been a massive maze runner fan for years (read the books but preferred the movies), am i the only one that think the second and third books wouldn't have translated that well into movies? the plots were good book-wise, but turning that into a movie then becomes a whole thing on its own so changing the stories kind of makes sense to me. i generally treat the movies and the books as their own separate entities

So… I haven’t read the book in full yet. I’ve read like halfway through chapter two so far, so I really can’t say a whole lot on the comparisons between the movie and the book. Except the beginning is completely different! I really loved this movie like the other two. I literally bawled my eyes out after watching this movie. Newt’s death hit harder than any character death I have ever seen, even Tony Stark’s death didn’t hit me that hard. I ended up watching some really sad video edits afterwards and I started crying all over again. It took me a couple weeks to get hold of myself 😂. (Let’s just say I’m a very emotional person hehe.) Hey fun fact, Thomas Brodie Sangster actually wrote Newt’s letter himself and was standing behind Dylan reading it. Those were also real tears that Dylan was crying when Thomas was gonna shoot Ava. Guys I can not stress this enough. You Need To Read The Books!!! Also Stella I must say you have a very cute nose twitch 😂. 1:00:29 Well that’s it. Absolutely loved the reaction to the trilogy!

I feel like we need to see another film from Wes Ball, the director. This trilogy was his debut, and the biggest problem was the script. I feel like if someone gave Wes a great script, he could direct a great movie, cause he also had a lot of creative freedom with the look of things, like the grievers for example

With the books, only 3 were made into movies. The final 2 books of the series are prequels to the original trilogy. There was never any motive to make the final 2 into movies. There’s also a new-ish book that is a part of the Death Cure (book 3) that’s told thru Newt’s point of view. Not to mention, there’s tie-in material from the Maze Runner Files, which is a collection of short stories and info about the series. And there’s the sequel series, the Maze Cutter series. It takes place 73 years after the original trilogy. That series is supposed to be 3 books. For the universe that this is all told in, there’s going to be 10 books. This, of course, isn’t counting in the comics which focus more on the movies than the books.

I haven't read the books and I LOVE the movies! I understand book fans being upset about the changes they've made but nonetheless this is a great trilogy. The last one could have been better tho. Teresa is the reason a lot died but she's also the reason a lot lived and she really believed she was doing the right thing, not like Janson for example, so I can't bring myself to hate her even tho I know that's a very unpopular opinion lol

Unpopular opinion, but I have always liked Teresa. Even when I read the books, I never felt that hatred for her character that other people have expressed. I like how she believes in what she's doing, but she still feels guilty about it. She's definitely a character who will justify the means if it meant saving the "greater good." I like her death scene in the movies a lot more than in the books. In the book, Thomas and Teresa are running to try to get in this portal thing because the building was collapsing if I remember correctly. Well, they were almost out, but a piece of debris falls on her and she just died right there. It was out of nowhere and I wasn't sure how I felt about it after I finished the book. In the movie, it's seems much more of a deliberate choice of Teresa. She knew what she did was wrong and I interpret her staying as she felt too guilty to go with them after everything she'd done. She betrayed the whole group and watched as Minho got tortured. She knew she couldn't come back from that. I also think we understand Teresa and Thomas's relationship better in the books. They both had the ability to talk telepathically with each other. They had a bond before the maze, so that's why it feels like Thomas can't give up on her.

Teresa is a great character, she teaches that sacrificing friendship and love to work on a goal, without following what others say. There is no cure in the book, but she shows her dissension at the last moment when she realizes that there is no more time for a cure, that's when she decided to go with Thomas even though she died 😭. So excited to see your reaction. I've been putting it off for when I had free time so I could 'watch the movie' with you guys haha. By the way, they didn't have 5 books adapted into these movies. The movies adapted the 3 main books. The other 2 are prequels (IIRC) to the whole story and were not adapted into the movies, except some tidbits from _The Kill Order_ James Dashner might have wanted to include. (the other prequel, _The Fever Code,_ was published after the first two movies.) As I said in a reply, I've always believed that the relationship between Thomas and Teresa would've been better if they were siblings. Like, _so_ much better, especially in the movies in which they lacked their telepathic power. Didn't get the full picture of why Thomas is attached to Teresa so much? You don't need their backstory -- just knowing that they were siblings and have their memories back is understandable.

From what I recall from the books there was a lot of Thomas/Brenda adventures and getting to know each other that got cut in the movies. I think they hid out in a car all night or something and just talked. I remember Thomas and Brenda end up together which at the time I loved because there were not many series where the lead character stays with the second female lead (almost always it seemed it was the first female lead). I also think Teresa’s betrayal in the books was forced and they solely did it to see how Thomas would react (by forcing Teresa and Aris to fake a romantic affair or something?) because Wcked was testing Thomas in every way possible (I.e, physically, emotionally, etc).

Totally agree with Nobu and Stella's view on Teresa in this movie, especially at 15:51-17:00. I get where Teresa is coming from, and I can understand how she's rationalizing her morals and where she stands. However, I don't support the way she went about it. She could have easily gone back to WCKD without betraying her friends and getting all those innocent people killed in the second film. She also could have just talked to the others about it instead of waiting until the very last second to just completely blindside them. I also don't think she was redeemed in this movie at all. She only regretted and realized how she was doing things was wrong when Jensin was trying to kill Thomas and Thomas got shot saving her life. So, her dying did nothing for me. The movie really tried to get us to feel sympathy for her and I kind of do think she has good intentions but she's just very flawed morally. Sacrificing tons of lives to find a cure is not going to solve anything. Why do some lives mean more than others? And how many more have to die for this cure? That makes no sense. Also, finding a cure at the expense of kidnapping, torturing, and killing people, is not the answer and does not make you the saint fighting for humanity. I don't get why they didn't just ask for volunteers, instead of being so militant about these trails and tests. I feel like there won't be half the deaths if this was the direction WCKD went.

So I haven't read the books, or even seen this movie (just the other two and your reactions), but like Stella was saying, in the movie continuity, the reason Brenda is fine despite being infected in the last movie is because of the doctor lady who was part of Right Arm who made serum for her using Thomas' blood. That doctor lady then gets killed when WCKD attacks after Teresa betraying them. Doesn't that mean that Teresa trying to do "what she thought was right" is actually even worse than the moral implication of betraying your friends to try and save others? Since that doctor lady would have realized way sooner that Brenda was completely fine and then been able to make the cure from Thomas' blood without anyone else dying way earlier? Or even just making more serum from Thomas and then curing more people completely by accident!? So betraying them ended up working counter to Teresa's own goal and that's just never brought up by anyone!?
