As a young writer myself, I honestly love seeing people laugh at their old work. It feels like even if I write something like this, when I’m a more experienced writer I can look back on it and laugh. It takes away the pressure to be a ‘good’ writer, and it helps me remember to just have fun :D

What a treasure! Thank you for sharing! Don't be too critical of your young self. It's easy to look back through the lens of what we know now and wonder what we were thinking when we wrote THAT. But what we were doing in our youngest years as writers was discovering the joy of writing. We were courting imagination and story in its purest and most innocent form when everything was possible. We were realizing that not only do we love to make up stories, but that we held the power to create. And it's that joy that keeps us writing until late in life. So be proud of, and be kind to, that thirteen year old you! Because without that all-important phase of unbridled creativity, we never would've learned to carry the spark for years to come.

You invented an entire life, birthed it from the womb of your mind, substantial and complete, and invented a story to go with that life. What a marvelous achievement. Plot holes be damned. I loved the story, and had I read the book I would have loved plucky, violet-eyed Elizabeth Alice, too. Well done, my 13 yo friend.

Don't laugh at Young Shaelin :( She didn't know anything about writing and still produced an entire novel! That's such an amazing feat. Be proud of her, of every wonky sentence and cringey little scene. She'. The reason why you're now as good as you are. Her first wobbly steps are the reason you can dance now. Without her fearlessness and resolve you wouldn't exist.

Here's the thing though: was the writing objectively bad? Absolutely, it was written by a 13-year-old in their Dramatic Era. However, could I clearly see the nascent potential for what could eventually be very well-crafted writing? Yes! For certain! There were several moments where I could see what 13-year-old Shaelin was TRYING to do and accomplish, and even though it was clear that there were a lot of stumbling and fumbled bags, I could also see where it writing misstepped and how far the execution was from at least marginal success. There are several lessons here but my favorite is this: recognizing that something falls flat of its goal is a valuable observation, but the real gold lies in recognizing HOW and WHERE it falls short of its goal because those are your first clues to improvement and refinement. Thanks for this hilarious video for reminding me of such a priceless lesson!

You're very brave for putting this online with so many jerks out here. There's nothing wrong with being a 13 year old when you're 13. If someone judges you for your writing back then they clearly aren't far along on their journey to have been humbled by the process of writing and growing as a result of putting yourself through it.

A 90k words full book at 13 is so impressive. I wrote 8-10 chapters of a book when I was around 14 or 15. It was a rip-off of a book called Marked. The funny thing is I never even finished the book. 13yo Shaelin wants a word...she's not happy with this video XD That was the most memorable existential crisis I've seen and an amazing video. You're so brave to read what you did when you were young, I literally can't myself. Everything I've done before the age of 20, my mother has at her home and it's better that way. I don't want to see those ever again, my brain refuses to acknowledge their existence. And, btw, I'm certainly not saying that the book seems good or anything but it's amazing that you wrote it at such a young age. Just by the passages you shared, I can tell you've put some time and effort into this. Even the segments that are super melodramatic, I can see what your young self was thinking and understand what you tried to do there. You had the passion, but not the skill to put it onto the page, yet.

This was so entertaining. I didn't manage novel-length stories until university, so a full novel at 13 is impressive! I enjoyed a lot of the passages, even if I can see the technical issues. There's something so pure about those early attempts at writing. I look at mine and it's this mental snapshot. I'm taken back to who I was when I wrote it. My first attempt at creative writing at 13 was about the main character waking up (classic) and several paragraphs describing the sunrise. Then I realized I needed an actual plot and gave up. I thought that if I started writing, the plot would just come to me? Even though the main character had less personality and forward momentum than the actual sun. Watching this led me to read my first attempt at an original novel (in my twenties). I paced things way too fast, with one-page chapters and references to characters and events that I don't explain at all. Because exposition is bad! My most emo line: "I envy those with terminal illnesses."

I wrote most of a novel when I was eleven. It's about three kids who are named Jack, Jilly and Johnny. They live on a small island they aren't allowed to leave for some reason, but they leave anyway and find a different island. Here are some highlights: ‘“My mom has a boat,” said Jack “but she keeps it locked up in the garage because she has no need for a car.”’ ‘They had just enough money for three life jackets. They were fluorescent orange, Jilly thought them beautiful. “I’m not sure if ‘beautiful’ is the word I would use,” said Jack. “Maybe eye-catching?” “Enough adjectives already!” said Johnny. “It’s time for dinner.”’ ‘In no time at all they could see the island ahead of them. As they got closer, they could see details.’ (Obviously. Thats how vision works.) ‘Suddenly, Jilly remembered something that her grandma had told her about the ocean when she knew Jilly’s dad wasn’t listening ‘It’s a sand bar! It’s higher than the rest of the sand’ is what her grandma said.’ (I'm not sure why her Dad hate sand bars.) ‘Just then, Jack remembered why they came up here in the first place. He felt silly for not thinking of this before. “I can’t believe I overlooked this!” he said.’ ‘They were officially lost in a cave. All this happened while they were walking, which was a very bad idea because then they all fell into a hole, almost invisible from the darkness. To Jack, it felt like they were falling for minutes on end.’ (Who thinks ‘I’m lost in a cave. Better keep walking without looking where I'm going.’ Also the hole’s like six feet deep.) ‘And with that, Johnny took a running leap towards the cliff, caught a piece of rope in each hand and then slid himself down. “Where’d you learn to do that?” asked Jilly, who did not seem to be at all surprised or worried about her little brother. Jack’s face had turned completely white. “Relax. He’s fiiiine,” said Jilly “Most likely.” “You’ve got to work on your reassuring statements,” said Jack.’ (I don't know. I hope you enjoyed whatever this was.)

I didn’t come to laugh, I came to relate because I too wrote a novel at 13! Although, I find it funny how some of the ideas were same to mine, mainly the main character being a girl and an orphan, and the fact on planning two sequels. Difference was that I ripped off mine from a franchise that I’m not even a fan of but saw it because of the hype at the time, character name (which is also the title) was stolen from a character in the franchise, and the main girl is a princess and is completely unaware of that. More facts will stay kept to myself 😂 12 years later, I’m currently on the second draft of a novel I plan to publish this year. My story may have sucked, too, but I’m grateful it was the starting point towards today ❤

Dear shaelin, As you may have noticed, I've stopped capitalising the word 'shaelin'. Why? Because im legit upset that some of this book you wrote at thirteen is better than what i am writing now at thirty????? this is mortifying i want to scream cry and rip my own hair out the pain is so much (oh and also i actually don't use capital letters in my normal colloquial writing so basically i lied a little bit. but. i am still mad tho.) no but fr DESPITE the fact that this is just really good writing for a thirteen year old,,, it is genuinely inspiring that you are brave enough to share writing from when you were a lot less skilled (and obv a lot less mature) than you are now. i can only imagine how i would feel sharing my (emo) poetry from when i was thirteen lmfao. so. yeah! plus, yes, it did make for an entertaining half an hour minutes ps rewrite this book and make it Gay (...don't)

If Alexie had been born on the island, she likely would have learned how to make functional bows and straight and sharp arrows by this point in the story. However, half an hour is an unrealistic time frame for two bows (from scratch) and 10 arrows (5 each). 3 hours to a day (depending on the level of decorative detail and what kind of wood they're using) would have been reasonable. 👍

LOL This reminds me of some stories I wrote at sixteen - Gods they were bad!! 😂😂 Utterly melodramatic, with practically EVERY dialoge sentence ending at !!!!!!!!??!?!?!!??!?? (for the very least😅), plot rushing through increasingly unlikely "events" and everybody's dying at the end. They had to die, otherwise the story (such as there was any) would never be able to end. At some of them I just *had* to get to the point when the main (teenage, of course) characters are ninety, so they would FINALLY die and I'll FINALLY be allowed to finish their stories and get rid of them, so the last two or three chapters were mere chronology - child born then, grandchild born then, made this, did that, blablabla, !!!!?!?!???!?!??!?, and that is it, the loving couple are now ninety-something, they lie together in bed, they die, THE END.😂😂😂😂 Shortly after I turned seventeen (and already realized how to write good stories), I took a hard look at ALL of those... _scribblings,_ cancelled ALL of them AT ONCE and never looked at them again LOL

A thirteen year old with presence of mind to write a novel of any length let alone one of 90, 000 words -- is pretty awesome.

Oh, I'm revising a book I wrote as a teenager right now. Publicly online. I think I need that embarassment to really work on it, because, well, it inself is a darling to kill. Also, congratz for 90k words written as a 13yo.

I get a strong sense that your main character here (Elizabeth), is autistic. You're saying "emo" and "introverted", but I'm autistic and I'm seeing autistic traits. Which happen to, yes, resemble introversion, but she's also obsessed with sensory input, which is common for autistic people, either dreading sensory overload, or fully enjoying the input and craving more. (Autism is weird.)

I'm honestly impressed by 13-year-old you too. Yes, your descriptions were excessive. Yes, you wrote a Mary Sue. But, frankly, I've read worse prose from adult authors. So, be proud of your start and be proud of how much you've grown.

Yeahh I remember when I read what I wrote when I was like 11..man was it stupid. No wonder my dad told me to stop writing. But I’m trying to get back to writing, trying to write a game of thrones meets cyberpunk, with some magic the gathering inspirations. Basically 3 villains, a mad warlord, a AI robot that can transform into a dragon to a giant warship etc, and Death itself. Then the hero is a clone of the king who trying to transfer his mind to his son body to live forever and he doesn’t know, and there a chick who royalty and blah blah. Write like 20 pages and quit

If the adopting family are extended relatives and the 15 year old had no one else, then it might happen. Certainly during the second world war that did happen with families that had people on both sides of the pond, because wanting kids to be somewhere that's not being air-raided was definitely a thing. Also, despite your embarassment-- I came here to be impressed, and I am! 90,000 words at 13? Even if it's based on an existing plot, writing a 90k AU fanfic at 13 is still heeeelllla impressive!

I can't get over the 'The silence of the ocean is calming' line, it's so funny in contrast with a devastating plane crash, if it wasn't for the fact that it was supposed to be serious it would've been perfect as a work of dark humour! Hahaha. To share mine in return, this is a paragraph from a fanfiction I wrote when I was 14 that was ~totally~ not a self-insert, bonus points for dropping the M word when describing other people that happened to have different interests from me and extra points for including real-life teenage dramas; ''Being the quiet type of girl I didn't have friends however I didn't care for that. I tended to stay away from the loud, mundane girls that would allow you to befriend them. Then they would rather un-discretely stab you in the back. They were awful to me and just because they sound friendly, would never truly mean that they were.'' So incredibly emo... Good grief, haha. I hope mine's able to give you a good chuckle, too! Thanks for sharing! ♡

9:00 "Those ARE all colors, you are correct." I know you're sassing yourself, but you're also sassing someone half your age. And for some reason it's side-splittingly funny. 10:55 "we didn't get adopted as babies, we're too damaged" ... good lord, there's emo, and then there's nihilist. 17:20 is as far as I could get before I had to run away laughing my brains out. 13-year-old Shaelin's dialogue is just as bad as you say it is. ✌

Stories written by tweens/young teenagers are great because you've learned all the words but you're still too immature to really grasp their meaning or use them correctly in context, you just string a bunch of words together that you think sound cool and I think that's so fun Edit: Though obviously it's very VERY impressive that you wrote a whole novel at 13!
