Mick Jenkins has one of my favorite discographies in all of hip hop and probably my favorite rapper. He’s cool, poetic, smart, chill, energetic at times, he’s great for a lot of moods and both stylish and intellectual. Also this is his angriest most power-voiced album yet, one of his best but he has a lot of amazing albums

I wouldn't consider the closing lines on ROY G BIV being shots against Little Simz as Mick has a feature on her EP from 2015, not a super well known cut though. The lines could also be a reference towards Saba's album Care for me, another artist that Mick has worked with quite a bit in the past who runs in the same Chicago music scene, The albums cover art is grey and has a song titled Grey that brings up the struggle to maintain artistic integrity in the rap industry (A grey area). A reoccurring theme on this album is about Mick being content with his position in the industry now while still being true to himself hence no longer being in a grey area. There is also the aspect on no longer caring to appeal to a white audience in order to reach mainstream popularity when you consider the "Fuck the silver and blonde" and "Need these ebony flows out the white gaze" lines.

I love that “They spend so much to be desired” line because it can be taken in many ways. Firstly, it means that people put all their money into the game so that they can be desired by listeners and record labels etc. but it also could mean that they spend so much money, for the listener to still desire something more from them. They spend all that money but are left to be desired

I'm thrilled that Bob has finally delved into an album by an artist I suggested quite a while back, possibly around early 2022. I've been following this channel since November 2021, initially captivated by the reaction to Kendrick Lamar's GKMC. It's honestly a joy to express my appreciation for this unexpected turn of events. I hadn't anticipated him covering an artist who's not widely recognized or firmly rooted in the mainstream, being somewhat of an underground gem. It's quite unlikely that many subscribers would have recommended this artist. As I've journeyed alongside the channel, I came to the conclusion that Mick Jenkins might remain absent from the roster indefinitely, considering you typically tackle just one album per week, and occasionally two in rare instances. My enthusiasm dimmed as I thought this incredible artist might go unnoticed by you and the wider audience, missing out on his remarkable music. Given my understanding of your musical preferences so far, I truly believe Mick Jenkins is an artist that would resonate deeply. Thus, it's with immense elation that I've witnessed this sudden plunge into the world of Mick Jenkins. I'm overwhelmed by gratitude that you chose to explore his work out of the blue. Words can hardly encapsulate the happiness I'm feeling right now. On a side note, I want to extend my gratitude to Bob for taking this unexpected path. It's a genuine testament to the surprises that can come from open-minded exploration of music. Love your channel, from Nigeria.

Mick Jenkins is a special rapper I listen to both him and Kendrick Lamar simultaneously. He's just that dude, even just conceptually nobody can touch him. He's on his lane kinda like Travis Scott but as a conscious rapper. And he is also quite ahead of his time with the beats, quite raw too. I love this dude man, a really good rapper and JID knows it. Good reaction, Bob. I also rap (and react). I was consistently mind blown by Mick Jenkin’s rapping. He had an aggressiveness and lyrically was on Lupe, CyHi level. Mick toned down the singing and vibey tunes to focus on the lyrics cuz its so so hard to be dense and musical (damn near impossible, as u saw on the Travis reaction). As a rapper, this album laid out the blueprint for this lane of music. Ppl like Mick, Isaiah rashad, JID, earthgang, Yasiin Bey, Freddie Gibbs and many more can combine what Mick is doing and extend the songs, THEN apply Travis Scott level production in terms of complexity and beat switches and intros and outros and u have the perfect mix of musicality and lyricism.

Another reminder that Chicago got the best rappers. "Consuming music rather than enjoying it." - exactly! But most of the music these days is so vapid that it comes and goes. That's why I'm a big Lupe fan, it's so layered that you gotta come back to it. While I'm talkin Chicago, you gotta go back to the classic Adrenaline Rush by Twista.
