There were three main reasons armies of this time period fought like that. 1. There are no radios. Officers have to issue orders via shouting, drums, flags and other instruments. Troops had to be formed up so close together to actually see and hear their orders. 2. Muskets are inaccurate and slow to reload. Trying to hit anything past about 70 metres was extremely difficult. Being forned up like that maximized the chances of hitting a target. A literal wall of lead. When the first line of men fired they usually stepped to the side to allow the second to fire or they were handed loaded muskets to fire from the rear lines while they sent their own back to be reloaded. This allowed for a constant volume of fire, working around the slow rate of fire of the weapons themselves. 3. Cavalry. Scattered Infantry make easy targets for horsemen. Infantry formed up and ready to fire concentrated volleys or arrayed into giant squares so they can't get attacked in the rear or sides (horses aren't dumb and will not charge directly into a wall of bayonets) will counter cavalry charges.

They fought in formation because armies back than were issued muskets which were so inaccurate that the only way you could hit the enemy was to unleash a massive volley of bullets at the enemy. At the same time civilians had much more accurate rifles required for hunting. That is why Martin and his kids easily picked off the soldiers while the soldiers were attempting to hit them by firing as a unit.

The reason they fought in linear formations was that rifled weapons had not been invented. The rifling imparts the spin on the bullet which makes it accurate. Muskets of this era took about 20-30 seconds to load and were not accurate, also had very limited range. So the battles of this time were not as deadly as you would imagine. It was only when the technology started to outpace the tactics that the casualties increased and that was when linear warfare was eventually phased out.

The bangs are excellent. The oldest boy is Keith Ledger. He's gone now but also did the Joker in Batman, and was the lead in one of my favorite comedies A Knight's Tale. The British and European powers in this period considered the kind of war depicted as civilized believe it or not. In some ways it was I guess, but it also enabled the Americans to use guerilla warfare to force them to withdraw.

I’m from this area of the world. About an hr inland from Charleston, South Carolina. The person Mel Gibson plays was named Francis Marion and his story is a big deal around here. There’s even a university named after him. Without his and his men’s tactics and bravery, I’d be British right now. At that time we were losing and that all changed when Francis Marion started pushing General Cornwallis out of Charleston, and then with help from the continental army they drove them out of the south all together and forced them to fight Washington and the French with a tired worn out British army. History isn’t written in black and white. There were some farmers in the south at that time who freed slaves that they purchased. My own ancestor Michael Turbeville lived in South Carolina and freed 8 slaves that were being sold in Charleston at that time, gave them the option of working on his farm and paid the ones that did. We know this because we have copies of the legal documents that show all this, as well as his diaries and letters. When the civil war broke out he fought for the north, even though he was from the south.

In this time the guns were mostly not that accurate. That, and soldiers were not so skilled in shooting. The most reliable tactic was to use men in a formation to fire a volley of bullets at the enemy. The English army were the best at this. What they did not know how to deal with was guerilla warfare, irregular tactics, which the Americans learned from the native peoples. You should watch The Last of the Mohicans. It is from a slightly earlier period in American colonial history, and is a much better film. It is in the time of the French and Indian (sic) Wars, and features the perspective of Native Americans more prominently.

European armies already had troops that used such tactics, the light infantry. Fighting against the natives of North America made the British and French realize they needed dedicated specialists for the role and not just regular infantry that would be assigned the job when required.
