I drove to Florida from California on Interstate 10. Tombstone is just about an hour or so off the interstate so I took a little detour. It was neat, I got there just near sunset after all the touristy stuff was done for the day and we were in that downtown area alone. My brother actually moved to that area about 8 months ago, but I've yet to return. Pretty interesting little history of that town, but sadly it was the genesis of anti-2A laws that we are still fighting over a century later. They couldn't control the criminals so they infringe the rights of everyone else.

A rough translation of what Doc and Ringo were saying to each other in Latin. Doc: "Yep, I'm sure of it. I hate him." Wyatt: "He's drunk." Doc (Latin): "There's truth in wine. Or in other words "Even though I'm drunk I know what I'm saying." Ringo (Latin): "Do what you do best." Doc (Latin): "I don't think drinking is what I do best." Ringo (Latin): "Some people need to learn from experience." (He touches his gun.) Doc (Latin): "Rest in peace." Or in other words. "It's your funeral."

Virgil continued working as a lawman (off and on) for several decades after this even though he had only one working arm. Wyatt roamed around a lot and ended up in Hollywood where he was a consultant on western movies; he met a young John Wayne who was working as a prop man at the time. Ike Clanton was shot to death while trying to steal a horse. Johnny Ringo was found shot to death but no one really knows who shot him; it might even have been suicide.
@itt23r3 ай бұрын
John Wayne apparently idolized Wyatt Earp in that I think I heard someone say once that Wayne got his iconic walk by imitating the way Wyatt Earp walked. And Doc Holliday was known to have been in a courtroom in Colorado when Ringo in Arizona died. So that kind of eliminates him as a suspect. In fact, the entire vendetta ride was a Hollywood fabrication after the scene where Wyatt shot Curly Bill in the creek. Having killed all the people they suspected to have been involved in Morgan's murder they skedaddled out of the territory. And that makes sense given that they were all now wanted for murder (and justifiably so). But leaving the job unfinished didn't suit the movie makers, so they embellished.
@wolfgar2713 ай бұрын
Ringo committed suicide. There was always speculation because there were no witnesses as the area was somewhat remote. But if you are familiar with his behavior leading up to the death and the circumstances, it's pretty certain that he shot himself.
@itt23r3 ай бұрын
@@wolfgar271 He was found with his boots hanging from a tree, which is what they did back then to keep the snakes out of them when they slept. So we are supposed to believe that he was so despondent that he was suicidal yet he was worried about snakes crawling into his boots? Just one of several reasons that people have speculated he was murdered. I mean woudn't he have wanted to die with his boots on? Wasn't that a thing back then? Seems to me they made a subtle reference to that in the scene when Doc died.
@wolfgar2713 ай бұрын
@@itt23r Respectfully, dying with your boots on was much more of a Hollywood thing, not so much in real life. His boots were not tied in a tree, they were tied to his saddle and the horse had apparently wandered off (saddle and all) shortly before Ringo's death. The horse was not found for another eleven days. Ringo had tied some cloth torn from his shirt around his feet and had apparently walked a short distance with his wrappings. In other words, another person had not loosed his horse since he had time to wrap his feet and walk for some distance. Also, they did not tie their boots up to keep out snakes, that's a falsehood. This was July in the Chiricahuas, it was monsoon season. It was more likely that he was drying them out. Incidentally, I've seen people in the middle of a suicide attempt complaining about paramedics cutting off their clothes so logic kind of goes out the window in the case of despondent, intoxicated, suicidal folks. Ringo was very despondent in the weeks leading up to his death and had been drinking heavily. His own pistol had been used according to the inquest composed of eyewitnesses, the pistol was found in his hand, the hammer was resting on the spent casing. There were no signs of anyone else having been in the area. Ringo had been talking about impending death and other dark thoughts leading up to his death. If it was murder, no one in those days cared about staging a suicide, especially in this part of the country. There has been a lot of conjecture about it and plenty of people love to make a more interesting story especially when it comes to western lore. I've seen a number of websites that have misrepresented certain facts to fit a speculative scenario. Usually, the simplest explanation is closest to the truth.

So few historical corrections to the movie...the Cowboys did not actually wear red sashes; that was something they made up for the movie to help the audience identify they characters. Fred White was a much younger man than depicted. He was actually 31 and there were several outlaws on a shooting spree but his death was likely an accident during that incident. Johnny Ringo was not very well educated and did not speak Latin, probably a little Spanish but not much. Ringo in all likelihood committed suicide (based on accounts of his friends, events leading up to his death and eyewitness accounts from the discovery of his body). The Earps were not seen as the "good guys" by many in Tombstone at that time (and by some even now). Many saw them as just another family of opportunists vying for power and profit when they arrived. In truth, they were far more into a moral grey area than any film likes to portray. It wasn't uncommon for some well-known figures of the time to straddle the line between outlaw and lawman. The Earps were even said to pimp out their wives when they were short on money. A very deliberate public relations campaign by Wyatt's wife Josephine (also depicted in the film) over the years, books and close ties to early Hollywood have created a very positive image of the Earps and Doc Holiday. Not that the Cowboys were upstanding citizens...just that it was more of two opposing factions coming to a head rather than the pure, good guy vs. bad guy scenario.

Yay, Tombstone! Wyatt Earp is one of the most famous people in American history. This movie gets some things right, but adds a lot of "creative" elements to make a good movie better. Wyatt Earp was never married to Mattie. They had just been together so long, she was considered his "commonwealth wife". She was addicted to opium and they were near breaking up when they went to Tombstone. Doc Holiday was a dentist who had to give up his practice once he contracted TB. Doc Holiday was so good at card playing he was sometimes accused of cheating at cards. There was never any evidence of cheating found. Doc Holiday was an extremely intelligent and well educated man who could count cards and strategize at poker better than those he played against. In the beginning, that poor newlywed wife wasn't just killed. The cowboys had their way with her first, then killed her when they were "done".

So (at 8:20), the line where Doc asked Wyatt, "Do you actually consider yourself a married man, forsaking all others" was telling ... he knew Wyatt was NOT, but wanted to know if he *_FELT_* he was. It was a test of Wyatt's resolve, along with a bit of Doc's strange sense of humor. Wyatt's response was that he was committed, not that he was married ... he didn't believe in it ... after his first wife died tragically just after they were married. Mattie was actually a prostitute that Wyatt dragged around with him, for convenience, more than anything ... so he wasn't alone all the time, but she was a leech and a drug addict, and her time was running out before they even arrived in Tombstone. However, since Arizona has never, EVER recognized ANY "common law" marriages at all, Wyatt was free to do whatever, with whomever and whenever he wanted to. Even so, he tried to help Mattie, but you can see she was slipping further and further into her addiction, and yet, Wyatt *_never_* got together with Josie until long after all 3 left tombstone ... each going their own separate ways. Wyatt caught up to her in San Francisco nearly a year later. I STILL love you and your reactions. Can't wait for the exciting conclusion ... 🤣😂🤣👍👍

I agree with what you are saying about Wyatt and Mattie's relationship. But from my understanding it is not entirely settled. I recall that there are some from that time who insisted Wyatt and Mattie were legally married,.

@@itt23r Fair enough, but I've done some pretty extensive research on this, and that's the info I found.

Back then there was no known cure for Tuberculosis. There is now. John Henry Holiday was called Doc because before he succumbed to Tuberculosis he was a dentist.

If you ever make it out Arizona way. Tombstone is about an hours drive southeast of Tucson Az. The town still exist... although burnt down a few times. There are still some of the places still in existence. The Saloons, the Birdcage theater and the Sight of the shootout a the OK corral.

Yesterday was Holliday's birthday. I grew up where Morgan is buried in Colton. Their parents liver there. Tombstone is an amazing town with tons of paranormal tours and stories of wild deaths.

I recommend these two movies featuring Wyatt Earp as well; Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) and Hour of the Gun (1967). I personally find Hour of the Gun really underrated.

I guess root beer is the more popular flavor, less of the bitter profile. Root beer is a soft drink made from the root of sassafras. I’ve seen first time tasters in the UK say it tastes like toothpaste to them.
