One thing I‘d like to hear about is your philosophical approach to music/beatmaking, like what‘s the point of it, how does beatmaking fit into the cultural past of music, what has it taught you about life? Appreciate the videos and the chill vibes, you are a legend!

Great video. 20 minutes of expressing why everyone should be comfortable being themselves, and the joy of music should be within making it, not trying to make it for others. All gospel truth,

Great vid and thank you for including my comment . Your response makes me feel even more at ease with my process. I feel that your process is very organic and also minimal as possible which is the way I go about it as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us🙏🏾

you said "minimal".. that's one of the reasons that +I+ could not work with this "come back to it in a month" style. +I+ would just keep piling crap, on top of track, on top of crap... I think it would end up exactly the opposite of minimal +for me+.

Marlow I had an mpc2000xl with an eb16 fx chip. It did wonders to very plain samples. Did you ever install the eb16 on any of your mpc2000xls? And how was your experience? For me it got basic piano melodies to have good echo and wah wah like Pete rock used to do . Even after eqing it perfect the eb16 felt like it filled the blank spaces more. If that makes sense

About the last comment/question, I've heard this 'argument' before. I think it's best phrased as 'You can't make Baroque music because this isn't the 17th century.' I get that reasoning, but I do struggle to see the value of that knowledge; except for, I can appreciate that I have not experienced the context of the Baroque music and that maybe a needed consideration when making the music? Or, an understood flaw of 'reproducing' and sounding like Baroque now in the future? Its a paradox of a question and interesting to consider.

Great video, brother. Your comment about step-write really struck a chord with me. I used it back in the day on my MC-303. I know that unit gets a bit of hate, but I have a lot of great memories with it. And regarding the 90s sound, just because a decade only lasts 10 years doesn't mean the vibe can't continue. I grew up in the 90s and still think of music creation the same way when I use my 2000xl. Keep doing what you're doing, brother; you inspire so many people. Love you, man.

I think I figured it out +for me+... Regarding your style of "coming back it in a month": +I+ think of songs like entries in a journal or diary. Each song is the way that I felt.. that DAY... or that WEEK. Coming back to finish a song, a month later, feels +to me+ like... picking up your journal/diary, turning back to some day that happened month earlier and then writing some extra emotions and junk down.. for the end of THAT day. Counterintuitive +to me+. But... we all think of music in different and beautiful ways! Dope video... per usual, sir!

Idk how cost effective it’d be, but I’d love to see a modular MPC option. Give us 3-4 housings to use with varying pad/screen layouts based on what they’ve tried, 2-3 screen size options, including one the size of an iPhone. And then pick your internals, you want 8 outs on the MPC one, it’s an option at a cost type thing. Want 2TB and a speaker, cool. It won’t be for everyone, but those that it’s for would love the flexibility. I’d gladly take an MPC studio (Black), current OS, with a battery, 5” touch screen, WiFi/BT, 2TB and mini speakers for $1200 😂 😂. If you could reimagine your MPC from what’s available, what would come up with?

Marlow, what's your take on buying gear and making beats occasionally as a hobby rather than for content creation and making money. Sometimes I feel, when I don't make beats for money, I'm just wasting money buying equipment, but deep down I love making beats.

Most musicians in the world are not professional musicians. Not everything has to make a profit - in fact most art is not profitable. So buy gear, make your music and enjoy it - BUT make sure you have time to be creative and learn the gear you have.Sometimes what we crave is inspiration and time to be creative - not new stuff.

@@TheMattmatic thank you for your response, means alot. And I honestly don't buy gear as I've been unable to afford it, however I plan on purchasing some before the year runs out. I'll keep making music and upload occasionally for fun. Thank you once again.
