Now you understand just how great those times were. Can you imagine a pop song theze days singing about Russia?

That is one of the smartest, funny songs ever written.

Those people who hated this song were taking it way too seriously. The Beatles never intended it to be an anti-American song. They simply decided to write a rival song to Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA". Typically, thin-skinned Americans took the lyrics to be proof that the Beatles were sympathetic to communism. They were nothing of the kind. It was an example of their typically warped British sense of humour. They were, as we say in the UK, "taking the piss" out of the Communist regime. One "America's Got Talent" contestant who sang the song interrupted himself during the performance (he had just sung the line "you don't know how lucky you are, boys"), to apologise to his American audience, saying - "I'm sorry, guys. Those are the lyrics...". A European audience would have laughed him off the stage for taking the lyrics too seriously.

I whole heartily agree with that and I was eighteen years old in 68 and I don't ever remember it being controversial whatsoever. It was a great rocking song. One of the great ironies is that now of the three places they spoke of that were once a part of Russia Ukraine, Georgia, and Moscow the former two are now independent Republics. Ukraine is now currently being threatened for invasion by Russia in an attempt to prevent them from further aligning with the west and perhaps becoming a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

The difference was the chuck Berry song was "meh" and the Beatles one was genius, off an album that sold 31 million.

But if you'll notice the lyrics "leave it to tomorrow to unpack my case Honey disconnect the phone." is an obvious dig on the KGB's propensity for tapping Russians' phones.
