In England we sometimes call women birds. Paul McCartney wrote this about civil rights in America. The Beatles first toured the USA in 1964, they found out some southern state concerts there would be segregation, so they refused to play the concerts if black people were segregated away from white people. The concerts went ahead with no segregation.

Written by Paul McCartney about the civil rights struggle in the US. During their touring days they refused to play to segregated audiences in the south also.

@David Hargreaves Which bit are you saying isn't true - that it was written by Paul referencing the civil rights movement (he's said in interviews this was what he was thinking of when he wrote it), or that the Beatles refused to play to segregated audiences in America? (When they found out about this practice they quickly had a clause inserted in their contracts with venue management to say playing under such conditions was unacceptable; examples of these signed contracts can be viewed online.)

@@papercup2517 Even in interviews when The Beatles are asked about playing to segregated audiences, Paul states that their music is for everyone and that playing for a segregated audience makes no sense to them. The Beatles were very much against segregation.

Substitute the word "man" for "bird" to spot what the song is really about.

Actually, the word 'bird" is slang for girl, so this is more about black females.

Even though this song was credited to Lennon and McCartney, it was written and recorded as solo by Paul, who is the only Beatle on this song. The tapping you hear hear is Paul tapping his foot on wooden floor.

Of course. It gets a little tough doing Beatles reactions because all their videos block. I have to keep disputing them any pray that the copyright owner releases the block so the video can be seen.

I Appreciate your willingness to take the BEATLE journey.you have to understand living it then and living it later like now are two very different things.there was no you tube. NO FM even at that point.we waited on the edge of our seats for months.what would they do next.every album was a leap of faith into experimentation no one else ever did. Revolver blew minds Sgt PEPPER blew minds in a different direction. The WHITE ALBUM was omg .wtf there was 4 guys so creative what will they do next. It all took them to LET IT BE. .thats why there's the BEATLES. And everyone else

It was written for you brother, black person, but back in the 60's. Paul specifically wrote it for the black segregation that was still happening in USA at that time. That was a time when it was really happening. Today I think it's mainly happening in people's heads.

Paul wrote this after Martin L. King was assassinated! The message is ; this is your opportunity to rise and claim your freedom! There is a lot of messaging here. Into the dark of the dead of night- segregation.

Black Bird is a "Black Girl". The BRITS referred to girls as "birds'. John Lennon did also in HIS song; Norwegian Wood.

This is Paul's best song, IMO, taking melody and lyrics. Paul has songs with maybe better melodies (Paul is king of the melody), but no song with better lyrics. Melody is based on a Bach composition, by Paul's admission. Lyrics are based on the civil rights movement.

Commenting on the song without providing context to its lyrics leaves one a little empty. This song was and is too significant to not underscore its meaning.

The clicks you here were additions added by the Beatles to frustrate record owners who didn't want to hear any skipping (clicking) noises when they played their records. When a record had a scratch on it it would make a clicking noise when the record spun around and played. This clicking would drive music purists crazy.

well as Phillip Bachelor said below, or above, 2 months ago - this song was was a metaphor for the civil rights movement, and The Beatles made statements about not playing to segregated audiences in U.S. As I recall the KKK threatened to terrorize the 1967 show at then DC Stadium, later RFK Stadium where I saw them play then because of Lennon's comments about the relative popularity of The Beatles and Jesus for 1960's English kids, and just as likely that anti-segregationist stance thrown in. Nice if the reviewer bothered to learn the history of the song a bit before bouncing along to it like a nice little catchy tune that doesn't relate to the history of race relations in Amerika ...... Too much to ask to do your homework before presenting your report to your "class"????????????????????

First, how much can one learn about a song without taking the chance that it will start playing and ruin the genuine nature of the reaction? Second, how many people realized the civil rights analogy in the song upon first hearing when it was released? Perhaps we can agree that the reactor can give his reaction and not the recycled reactions of others?
