'In Seoul' means the universities in Seoul which are considered better than the ones in other areas since Seoul is the capital of South Korea. When they wrote the song, most of them were teenagers and they wanted to say their own story.

They are ages 20-25 right now, however this song was first released in 2013 (the year they debuted).This particular performance was in 2015 I believe, at their HYYH 화양연화 On Stage Live concert (someone correct me if I'm wrong). When they debuted in June 2013, the youngest member, Jungkook, was 15 (international age) and the oldest, Jin, was 20 (international age). (Korean ages are figured differently, but I'm not sure how, so I'm using their international ages, based on their actual birthdays.) The music video really drives home the message of this song in my opinion - about the pressure young people (students specifically) face in the Korean education system (and society too). Side note: The HYYH 화양연화 On Stage Live concert has some of my favorite live performances from BTS. I think it's the live band...their music always sounds so much more visceral with live instruments, so combine that with a live performance? oof. one of my favs is "Ma City" - a song about each of their hometowns. There are a lot of Korean geographic and cultural references in the song, but they are each so passionate that I think it still communicates well even if you don't have the full cultural context. => youtube[.]com/watch?v=nb-H3DdXNUA

I think they were talking about education more than the idol industry. In korea (and most asian countries) parents put their children under al lot of pressure to get good grades and focus on school. This songs was about not following the dreams of your parents (education) but going for what you want to. I know that rm en sugas parents for sure didnt wan them to do music, but focus on school. But because they were both passionate about music they didnt listen. So in a way, it is their story, as in they went after their own dream to make music

BTS is really well known for their inspiring and beautiful lyrics in their songs which they cover things like mental health, depression, drugs, social controversy, etc. Which are taboo topics in Korea. This song is about them saying NO to the strong Korean system of where parents forces and pressures their kids to study and be No.1 instead of following their own dreams and goals. Such an inspiring song
@abbiea12376 жыл бұрын
So funny the one reading the lyrics the most intensely even to the point of missing the performance is the least understanding of the lyrics which were clearly talking about the pressures of school, parents dreams and hopes versus younger generation whose not allowed their own dreams or hopes which are slowly but surely being squashed. This is why so many of the younger generation in Korea but some other countries as well with similar societal beliefs and system are suffering from depression as well as having suicidal tendencies and in many cases (Korea having a record high) leading to actual suicide! Some of BTS had to suffer one of this with their own parents while growing up. These lyrics as well as many other songs from BTS have literally saved lives and given back hope to many. This is one if the reasons BTS (Bullet Proof Boyscouts) have such a loyal diehard following. Since the very beginning BTS has been writing these kind of lyrics speaking out and taking chances and risks in doing so being that Korea can be a very repressive society. Luckily things are getting a bit better (hopefully) with their corrupt president being finally impeached and there seems hope with their new president who funny enough got elected around the same time USA got Trump! Luckily BTS come from the most supportive company (BigHit Entertainment) ever that actually encourages them in their pursuits, even encouraging them to write as well as produce their own songs although they do have some of the most amazing in house producers as well as dance trainer/choreographer. Unlike any other company the profit sharing is beyond fair and rather amazing. Their CEO Bang Si Hyuk (Hitman Bang is more like a father figure although he wants BTS to be strong and stand on their own and doesn't want to take any of the credit. Army totally loves BigHit and consider them as part of the family. So.......your interpretation of the lyrics was so off. But indeed if it was any other entertainment company you would have been correct. Especially the big 3 which are now called the small 3. Since they do totally control their "idol" artists. Getting back to BTS they are so into speaking up for the younger generation and trying to inspire encourage and give them hope to never give up that BTS has even teamed up and become partners with UNICEF with an "End Violence" campaign for youth to protect by trying to stop abuse, bullying and violence. They themselves have not only donated large sums of money but a part of the physical sales of albums and merchandise goes towards this cause as well!

The education system in South Korea is something else. After regular school lets out, students go to cram schools - special classes in math, English, science, etc. (which parents pay $$ for). Many high school students don't get home until 9pm - 10pm and then, they do homework. Students are ranked within their class and within the school, so there is constant pressure to move up the rankings (i.e. step on one's friends). Since parents are paying for the extras, there is pressure at home, too.

This performance made me into an hard ARMY. I all know about the pressure they talk about as I grew up in Korea. I spent my adulthood in US thinking I was different from my parents. But... this song woke me up. I became my mom. I was telling my children follow my dream for them, not theirs. BTS really inspires me!!!
@kimchi44386 жыл бұрын
BTS has a lot of very meaningful songs like criticizing the society, encourage, and most especially hope. Their lyrics is honestly why they attract so many adult people. You might be surprised to know that the largest age range of the BTS ARMY is around 20-40 y/o.
@blxcklab6 жыл бұрын
It's about the pressure of the society in South Korea towards their kids. Their parents or the system rather are very strict when it comes to studies. They get tutored early in the morning around 6-7 am before they go to school where they have to grind their brains out with the exams. The systems expectation is very high out there...if they fail their national exams they won't get another chance of being hired by big companies.. So their parents encourage their children to study hard so they can achieve their dreams.. but when the kids fail they commit suicide. That is how tough the system is. BTS songs are mainly about how the younger generation should reach their dreams and not hinder it. This song is about the system. Kai is some parts correct. BTS is a victim of the system, but they dared to chase their dreams and encourage the young generation to reach for their dreams no matter what.

Jk, the youngest, was born in 1997. Jin, the oldest, was born in 1992. But, Korean age is a whole other thing. In Korea babies are considered 1 year old at birth. Then, in January, everyone is one year older. So, technically a baby born in Dec can be called a 2 year old in January. (I know this doesn't make sense.. which is why it's safest to go by the year one is born.)

Hey guys.. I'm glad you reacted to this piece..They were talking about the hardships of youth who were being forced by their parents to study study because in Korea parents tend to have this competition or shall we say obsession to have their children study hard and even after classes still go to some academies to study some more....saying that's for their future and stuff..They were trying to convey that young people must have the freedom to choose their path.They must know how to say NO and not always saying YES to their parents wishes..(although that's not bad at all) but from the young people's side.. parents must consider.Anyways.. thanks for looking deep into the meaning of the song...If you got time try clicking the MV.. it's hella lit..kzbin.info/www/bejne/o57KqYOCgbGsjNE

Right now they're 20 to 25. They've been in the kpop business for 7 years. The youngest Jungkook started when he was around 13. They're talking about the Korean school system. How Korean parents are always pushing their kids to be the best, at the detriment of their own dreams. There's a high suicide rate in Korean school children and young adults because of this.

I wish you two could do the journey of all BTS genious and inspirational lyrics like this one cs this stuff is really what sets them apart from other artist and the fact that they make meaningful music and yess you are rigth they are talking about the next level presure korean society puts in youngers and how they feel sufocated by it to the point that corea is n1 country with the most sucides in the world. Is a cultural isue in corea and sensitive topic but still they wanted to talk about it and just tell their fans that if u want to achieve your dreams just work for it till the end and say N.O to everyone who wants to drag you down like it happened to them!! Plus BTS songs have a complex lyrical composition bcs they usually use a lot of korean word-play or popular sayings that most of the pple who listen never seem to notice. I hope in the future u can understand their deep mesages cs they worth it!!!♡ And so sorry for my gramar here im from Argentina!!

Kai your comment regarding the KPOP is right on.....The kids are trained at an early age and are told what they can and cannot do which is not normal. The company rakes in the money while the kids work very hard and probably don't get paid very much. The kids have a lot of pressure which hurts them mentally.

This is one of the earlier songs from when they first debuted 5 yrs ago the youngest Jungkook had just started h.s., Jimin & V were still in h.s., And RM & Jhope had literally just graduated. So they're talking about themselves but also talking about the immense pressures Korean society as a whole puts on its youth to succeed. Suicide rate in Korea especially among youth was #1 in the world At one point And if it's still not #1 I'm pretty sure it still up there. A Kpop group singing about this stuff is usually Unheard of Especially a rookie Kpop group. If you pay attention to be BTS lyrics you see most of the time They're really deep and meaningful & their albums usually have themes about things that are affecting them And people their age Right now we're in the "Love Yourself" era But this song N.O Was off an album in their "School trilogy" era 'cause like I said most of them were still in school During that era. and To answer your question right now their ages range from 20 to 25 The youngest will turn 21 next month At least that's their international ages for the Korean ages you have to add 1 or 2 years depending on when they were born (Yeah they have a different age system).

Interpretations differ for every person. But personally, i believe they are talking about what they feel- what every student feel on the education system esp in South Korea. "in Seoul to the SKY" is a direct reference to the top 3 universities there. So would you be happy just by having the opportunity to study there? Or is there more than that? Beyond the competition and stress from people around you? That's the question this song held. But i love that while one of you was focused on the lyrics and another one was on the performance and instrumentals. 😊
