Clara reacts to the Tardis that way because it is acting like it doesn't like her. Its her reaction back, being kind of defensive. I never saw Clara as a jerk. She can be feisty, but she has a natural want to help people and the doctor even at her own personal risk.

I never saw any of Clara's behavior as being particularly jerky. To me in seems that she's just a strong willed type. With the Tardis, we've seen in the past that it is not above being petty. It has a mind and sometimes it gets carried away, so Clara is just deciding not to roll over and take it. Reminds me of Donna in some ways.

This isn't the TARDIS calling Clara out for anything specific. It's being randomly obstructive to her. I'd hope that in real life people would be a little less accepting of that behaviour and wouldn't be so quick to blame the victim of it just because they haven't warmed up to her yet themselves.

Well she’s already had that line about dating plastic duplicates and them being a bit rubbish and all. It’s hard to know exactly when that is in her time line but given that she grew up with Amy and Rory became River then the whole marriage thing happened right after she made professor I would think a lot of the River we saw was after they were married from her perspective at least.

Classic series reference of the episode: the psychically-active crystal from Metebelis Three. The Doctor first picked up a crystal from there in the Third Doctor episode “The Green Death,” where it played an important role in the story; then it along with the planet itself were central to the Third Doctor’s regeneration story “Planet of the Spiders.” Side note: Matt Smith mispronounced “Metebelis,” partly messing up the callback.
@NicoleM_radiantbaby3 жыл бұрын
I always giggle at the way Matt says 'Metebelis'. Though to be fair, it's been thousands of years since he was the Third Doctor, so maybe the Doctor forgot the pronunciation? ;) (Even weirder was how Tom Baker often mispronounced Gallifrey -- that always makes me laugh....)

I think with the Clara thing that's rather the point, I don't think the show wants us to 'like' Clara in the sense of think she's a good person who we'd like to hang out with. Clara's a brilliant, fascinating character, but would I want her as my best friend? Probably not. It also plays into the whole thing of Clara being able to step into the position the Doctor usually occupies in the narrative-her flaws, the things that make her a jerk sometimes, mirror those of the Doctor.

Hello Ladies. The past year is proving to be very rough. In the beginning, it was kind of scary but cool, not knowing how long it was going to take. Thinking a few weeks and all would be right as rain. Not having any TP sucked, but we always managed to get some. Then as the days turned into weeks, the weeks into months the "fun" of it really started wear off and just become...normal. Then, right after Halloween my family and I got Covid. It was very scary hearing the word "POSITIVE". I really truly thought I was going to wake up one day, not be able to breathe and that would be the end. Fortunately for me and the rest of my family, that was not the case. We survived with minimal effect, the worst being no taste or smell for two weeks. Then we were all back to normal. For a bit. Then the weight of the pandemic started to take it's toll on everyone around me and I did my best to be supportive and strong. Then my neighbors caught it and three weeks later, my neighbor's wife had passed. This brought the reality of it hitting home. I felt like I wanted to break at that point. That was a few weeks ago. I even had to go to the clinic, because I felt like I had chest pains. I'm fine, I only had them the one day and haven't had them again since. But all of it just wears you down to the bone. I haven't seen my co-workers in over a year. We missed vacation last year and my family wants to go this year, but it's all up in the air right now. I put myself on the list to get vaccinated, still waiting for a date. Thursdays and your videos really help, believe it or not. Take me out of my reality for 20-30 minutes. So, that's how I'm doing.

It's been quite exhausting, but I'm doing pretty well at the moment. I'm working in a hospital, so I've been kept quite busy for the past few months, and it does mean that I do get to have some form of interaction with other people, so I'm not going totally insane in isolation. I do like this one, as the first half does have a very eerie aesthetic and atmosphere, it features my favourite Clara scene in series 7 with her emotional reaction to seeing the entire life cycle of Earth play out, and the Professor and Emma are really likeable characters, with a really sweet and tender relationship that's sold very well by Dougray Scott and Jessica Raine. Having said that, I'm not too fond of the second half, where it gets a bit too convoluted for its own good, and I feel the twist that the monster was actually trying to reunite with its partner kind of comes out of nowhere, and mostly came about because the writer wanted to do a ghost story which turns into a love story, an idea that "The Haunting of Bly Manor" did way better - in fact, given that Mike Flanagan is a Whovian himself, I wonder if that line from the Doctor was a bit of inspiration for him when he wrote the series. Or maybe it's just a coincidence, and I'm just reading too much into things. Hmm, maybe I am going insane in isolation...

Paula saying she wanted to come back to England and should be prepping right now made me sad and a bit homesick, although I’m here in England! Go figure! I recall being on holiday in the US on a bus driving to Sedona. To pass the time I was listening to my ye olde iPod on shuffle and ‘The King of Rome’ by The Unthanks came up - instantly madly homesick for England - I think it’s a song that would make you pine for England even if you didn’t come from here. LOL I'm here for Katrina's random facial expressions to camera. I'm also so down with Paula's view on Clara. She didn't earn any of the cockiness and despite the Doctor supposedly being really sceptical about who or what she is he has no trouble trusting her even with the Tardis. It was too forced for me and they tried to make her too Dcotory even though I know why they did it and what they were going for.

Never in any episode is The Doctor referred to as Dr Who only as the Doctor

Although the character did used to be occasionally credited as such, and for decades was referred to as such in media etc.

The problem with making the companion the focus of the big mystery plot is that she isn't really given much of a chance to expand beyond that. She particularly suffers this series because 1) Moffat can't really write women that well and 2) she wasn't originally meant to be modern Clara. It feels like they started with the mystery and worked backwards.

I know it's a common refrain over the years that I've heard about Moffat in fandom that 'he can't write women well' and maybe that's all just a difference of opinion, but I've just never gotten that impression, myself? Like, not at all. 🤷♀ I mean, maybe it's just me, but I always personally found Moffat's companions more relatable than RTD's when it comes to the 'new' series, for example. But again, YMMV, I guess?

moffat writes women extremely well. certainly better than the nagging mothers or constantly love obsessed doctor desperate rtd ones. even donna who isnt romantically interested in the doctor gets made out to be useless without him. the three best written women in doctor who come from moffat although we havent met one of them so far and clara does get better. clara gets plenty of good character scenes in this series though. this episode having one of them.

@@NicoleM_radiantbaby It's precisely a matter of opinion. To me, most of the 'Moffat Women' are much of a muchness, and often don't feel particularly real to me. River, Amy, Clara etc. (just talking Who) all just feel like different aspects of Moffat's fantasies more than anything a lot of the time. Of course, they get fleshed out, but they don't always feel very 'real' to me. There's also the whole problem with them always being a 'mystery' or a 'puzzle' or something to 'solve' which gets particularly exhausting. It isn't just in Who, and it isn't with reference to RTD either. He has his own problems. Although generally what I'd say is at least Rose (as much as I'm not a fan), Martha and Donna all feel like distinct people to me.

@@dutchman8887 Who are the three best women in Doctor Who in your opinion? I think it's interesting how much people's perceptions of it differ.
