Just as it is also nice to a time when Doctor Who respected it's own canon by including a 2nd Doctor villain: the Great Intelligence and referencing a 2nd Doctor encounter with the G.I. by the reference to the London Underground system and the Saint John's Ambulance badge that goes back to the First Doctor's TARDIS but wasn't on the TARDIS of several incarnations between Hartnell and Smith.

Eleven runs into the Great Intelligence for the first time in Victorian London, then the Second Doctor runs into the Great Intelligence twice - first in Tibet in the 1930's and then in London in the 1960 - where it was trying to take over the London Underground (wonder where it got that idea from?) - then Eleven runs into it again here in 2010's London.

Yep. I DO like it when competent writers do a good job of linking back to previous Doctor Who adventures. (especially to Classic Who) What can I say? I am a fan of Canon & Continuity. In Snowman, the Doctor planted the seed that steered the GI into the London Underground. And here GI even refers to the fact that UNIT is "very old friends" of the Doctor. A few people have touched on the subject, but the book Clara was reading was written by Amelia Williams, aka Amy Pond's married name. Turns out she didn't just right the detective story we saw in Angels in Manhattan, but went on to have a prolific writing career. It would also explain why chapter eleven was the best chapter in the book, as a little nod, subconscious or otherwise, to her departed friend.

The reason this didn't feel strange transitioning between Amy and Rory disappearing is because months passed with no Doctor Who and the return of Matt with Clara in the Snowmen and another break from there to this episode. So it was natural and a good period of time for people to heal and start up again. It's why people need to take some time between seasons ending and middle two part seasons. As Season 7A and 7B both are technically separate sections having completely different designs for the Doctors outfit, Tardis, intro etc. So that's why binge watching sucks at times with shows.

While I don't particularly like the second half of series 7, this episode is a pretty strong start for this run of stories. It's a pretty fast paced action-packed story, sort of similar to the companion introduction stories we got during the RTD era, where the story is very simple and takes a back seat to the introduction of the new Doctor-companion dynamic. Modern day Clara gets probably the weakest introduction of the three versions of her that we get, but she's established as a pretty fun character, with a fairly well-sketched domestic background and realistic motivations for joining the Doctor. Jenna Coleman likewise establishes a fairly decent rapport with Matt Smith, with a lot of quippy back and forth dialogue that is very typical for a Moffat script at this point. And credit where it's due, the story itself isn't that bad. There's some rather nice and creepy moments involving the "Spoonheads", and Celia Imrie gives a fairly strong performance as the episode's Big Bad, especially in the final scene which is a surprisingly downbeat way to end this episode. And the action setpieces are all very fun, with the episode's direction keeping things moving at a quick pace and keeping the audience entertained throughout. It's not exactly the most ambitious or original episode (it is for all intents and purposes a better version of "The Idiot's Lantern" from series 2), but it's a highly entertaining introduction for Clara, and a fun way to kick off the back half of this series

This series wasn’t the best but you made a massive mistake giving up, season 8 and 9 are a lot better. I never get how people can watch a show for this long and then abandon it

@@Arakhor I recommend going back and watching Capaldi's era, especially series 9. He was phenomenal

Is Clara like 80? Even the least computer-literate people I know can connect to wifi lmao. As a computer person, there are moments in this that make me cringe, but otherwise it's a pretty fun episode and a decent introduction to Clara.

You have to remember this was 8 years ago... computer-literacy has increased greatly in the intervening years.

@@johna5635 I don't buy that, sorry. People in 2013 knew how to use wifi lmao.

If you are in a large apartment complex, it still takes some skill to know which wi-fi to connect to, so you aren't leeching off of random strangers. And considering how many people can't set up a wi-fi network with adequate security, I think you are over-estimating computer-literacy.

There are younger people who are not particularly computer literate. I didn’t find Clara’s issues at all hard to believe.

You would be shocked actually.

Eh. A Clara episode. This was around the time I noticed the quality lacking. And the writers tried to make Clara seem oh-so-clever. Naw. I'll take Amy and Rory. Or Donna. Or Martha. Or Rose. Any other companion. And don't get me started on the not-so-Great Intelligence.

yeah bro they made clara seem oh so clever so they made her not know how to use computers or know what twitter is. how dare a woman try to stand her ground and try to be competent. gosh why do the writers try to make the doctor seem oh so clever? you cant notice a lack of quality if there isnt one.
