Not the first time in Who history that that's happened. Back in the 5th Doctor's era Peter Davison shot his second story before his first. And you can easily tell when watching them back to back because his hair is longer in the first one than the second one.

Karl Morton IV I haven’t seen a reaction but I have seen videos where they stitched River’s story together in her chronological order. I’ve watched her episodes in her order before... spoiler... A bit difficult to choose when she shows up more than once though. Given how convoluted her story gets. If Amy were really there, she’d be on the beach in three places at once. But Amy was already at Demons Run by then. So there were really just two in that scene... But she’s also a little girl in that episode and the next one. And that beach scene takes place different ways in different episodes so you have that mess to sort out too. I think River’s life is the most completely documented life on the entire show. From conception to death. Strange how that worked out.

The sequence of Amy watching the Angel emerging from the screen is one of the most effective moments of horror ever written in Doctor Who. As frightening as the direct encounters are, the tape image coming to life is very much the "don't think of an elephant" equivalent, with very dire consequences.

I really enjoy this episode. Matt Smith was brilliant, the tension and atmosphere was great. Fun fact, this was actually the first story of series 5 that was filmed because Alex Kingston was only available for a limited number of dates. It's amazing to see how quickly Matt settled into the role, he just seems so comfortable. I would argue no other actor settled into the role of the Doctor quicker than Matt. And I say that despite the fact that I prefer Tennant, Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi (I can't wait until you get to him) in the role. Looking forward to the next reaction!
@malvaashdown4 жыл бұрын
I think the same thing. To me, Matt Smith nailed the part right from the start. Tennant needed a few episodes, Whittaker too, and Capaldi was top notch in his second series. It's more difficult to say about Eccleston because he only had one series and it was a reboot after many years, but I think he was the Doctor from the start too. I love them all and enjoy this rewatch!
@Mrazmatmahmood4 жыл бұрын
@@malvaashdown I think Tennant suffered a bit because his Doctor wasn't actually present for a lot of his first two episodes. He was fast asleep for the 40 minutes of "The Christmas Invasion" and then he was possessed by Cassandra for much of "New Earth". "Tooth and Claw" was the first time Tennant was given the opportunity to shine for an entire episode and he did just that. Interestingly, I actually far prefer Capaldi in his first series. I think they watered down his Doctor and made him much too silly in his second series. Thankfully they found a healthy balance in his third series. Whittaker still hasn't nailed it for me unfortunately, but she's improved a lot from her early days.

@@Mrazmatmahmood That's part of what is so awesome with a tv show like DW : there is always something new, something different and a bit for everyone to love. @Thomas Meehan Is that why he remains the most popular Doctor ever to this day? Is that why the show was at its most popular during his tenure? I don't mean to shit on anyone's opinion, but you seem to be ready to pounce on anyone that praises Tennant for some strange reason.
@Mrazmatmahmood4 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Meehan That's your opinion, so good for you. I would argue that nine and Rose were also in love (people seem to ignore that) and it makes complete sense for that to happen considering she was his first companion after the time war and how she helped him to recover from that. I'd also say that the love story between the Doctor and Rose was only there to emphasise the Doctor's an alien and that he can never live a normal human life. It's a pretty similar case with Martha and the story with her shows the impact losing Rose had on the Doctor. He becomes more distant and colder, failing to notice Martha's feeling for him. He also grows a little selfish because all he wants is companionship to fill the void of loneliness left by Rose's absence. His failure to acknowledge Martha's feelings is another indicator that he's an alien that doesn't completely grasp human emotion. He may have fell for Rose, but that was under very special circumstances. This story also allows Martha to grow as a person and by the end she becomes more independent. She recognises her own self worth and she realises that she doesn't need validation from the Doctor and simply walks away. This experience also allows the Doctor to see how badly, albeit inadvertently, he had treated Martha. He realised that he had to move on from Rose and set proper boundaries between he and his companions, which we saw happen in "Partners in Crime" with Donna. The Martha arc did what any good story ideally should, it gave room for both characters to develop and grow better.

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes! It's one of those rare ones which actually makes adults like me scared. I literally had chills going through me even watching this reaction. They just keep dialling-up the scares. A bit of trivia, both Matt Smith yanking that handhold out of the shuttle cabin and then later biting Amy were improvised by him. Karen Gillan legitimately did not expect him to do that for real, hence the scream from her. Finally, I seem to recall the location shooting for this episode was the very first stuff Matt and Karen filmed for Doctor Who. I remember behind-the-scenes photos of them from around that time.

You are not alone, but I have never understood this criticism. The angels in “Blink” were a small group of four, existing by scavenging among those who wouldn’t be missed much. The angels in this one are basically a whole regiment with a plan that they are trying to execute. I guess we’re assuming that these angels are more advanced than the ones in “Blink” but their time might not run in the same direction as ours, but that’s by the way. The angels in “Blink” didn’t need to interact with humans beyond zapping them back in time, unlike these who need to goad the Doctor on. The two stories take place in completely different circumstances so it makes sense to me that they’d be behaving differently, And then in “The Angels take *SPOILERS*” they’re up to something completely different again. Moff found a lot more things to do with the Weeping Angels than anyone expected. 🙂

My ONLY complaint with Moffat really is this season demonstrated how well he can copy RTD's style of making the whole season tie into the finale and I know technically S6 does the same, but nowhere near as well. You've a time traveler, it's alright to write a whole season as one overarching story and doing it *well* .

Moffat had planned on having Tennant for this season, so just as the girl in the fireplace being written for nine but played by ten, so this idea was for ten but played by 11. Don’t be so sure that Ten didn’t have an adventure with River after the library. Because we didn’t see it doesn’t mean he didn’t meet her. She didn’t act like that was the first time she’d seen ten in the library. But in the library she did ask him if they’d done the crash of the Byzantium yet (so at least in Moffat’ head it was a Ten episode which he reworked for 11)

You genuinely can't tell that this was the first episode that Matt Smith filmed, he feels completely at ease in the role, especially given everything this story throws at him. This is a phenomenal first part for this story, tense, frightening, funny and action packed, with a fantastic cliffhanger to boot. River's mystery is built on excellently and Alex Kingston plays the part perfectly, showing great chemistry with Smith. The Angels are used excellently too. I think there was a worry at the time that this would strip away the mystery and threat they posed in Blink, but I feel the new abilities they introduced feel like a natural progression from their appearance in the previous story, and they still come across as a real threat. This story is essentially an Aliens-type sequel to Blink, so Paula's little comment about space marines was an appropriate comparison. Now for part 2...
