So... 1984 release. This is why Metallica are so revered... this was utterly unique at the time. It still holds up today. This cd is in rotation in my car right now :)

I have got all the CD:s still. But nowadays they are in my father's basement gym. Together with Sabbath, Nazareth etc. I found a use for my old albums, not just to collect dust in my shelf. My father loves this music, and I love working out. We all win. (He trains with me though he has arthritis and kidney failure and is 64 years old). P.S. (although no-one is interested) My father used to be a weight lifter (70's/80's) and did 200 bench (440 lbs).

I jam out to Metallica everyday, still to today, I'm turning 65 nxt month, & I'm still headbanging to them, & I mean hair whipping everywhere, 😆 🤣 Always been a Metallica headbanger since I heard of them, & that's in the 1980's, When I was a dancer, I use to dance to Metallica with my leather & spikes & my black thigh high heeled boots!!! I had all the guys headbanging with me, Drinking double shots of Jack Danials, Oh & I did alot of high round house kicks & gymnastics in my routine, This song made me really get into my choreography, Helped my performance & earned myself some nice tips, & Had a great time too as well, Metallica fans are the best to party with!!! The best memories ever, I got the chance to see Metallica in the early 90's, They're live shows rule, They were 🔥!!!

Ride the lightning is a fucking BANGER! I remember standing in my backyard, during a electrical storm, holding the metal clothesline, blasting this song, screaming the lyrics to the sky. Daring the storm to strike me. All I got was the sniffles for a full day afterwards 🤣

Ride the Lightning is about a man getting sent to his death by electric chair. The guitar solo is when he gets electrocuted...

That "distance" you hear on Ride The Lighting is unique among Metallica's music. I'm not sure how the recording process differed on this album, but compared to all their other albums it sounds almost cold. It makes it epic though. Master of Puppets sounds warm compared to Ride The Lighting. It's hard to describe but side by side it's very noticeable.

23:24 The grumble you heard was the legend Cliff and his fat bass tone, the dude was a genius. In fact The Outlaw Torn is believed to be about James' process of grief for the loss of Cliff And yes Metal, Jazz and blues have similarities, especially in Metallica since James is a great fan of both blues and Jazz

I’ve seen them about half a dozen times since 1986. They don’t change up their songs much honestly but I will tell you they sound even better live! You need to check out a show- you will live on that high emotion for weeks! I actually just listened to an entire concert from 2018 when I saw them last.

I absolutely love metallicas first 5 albums and some other songs off other albums but THAT at 19:19, that Crisp, Cold, Crunchy Tone is why Ride The Lightning is my favorite album. It is SO awesome and it fits the ALBUM THEME VERY WELL. Cliff Burton, the bands former bassist, who unfortunately died in a bus accident in 1986, is one of the best bassists of all time, he was highly educated in not only metal but classical. Listen to fight fire with fire. Cliff is often credited for the awesome intro, in which he was inspired by classical music. If you react to For Whom the Bell Tolls, I’d react to Live at Day on the Green, 1985. (before or after listening to the studio version, you choose) It’s actually pretty close to the studio version (song wise) and you can see Cliff’s Epic Bass solo at the beginning, and shows him playing the intro pretty well too.

I have seen them 4 times but the one that stands out the most was back in 98. With the drums in particular but with the whole band there seemed to be a lot more improv as far as their playing went. The drum were much different though because Lars only had one bass drum and I could totally tell when he had to change it up from having a true double bass. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend you go see them because every show is better than the last.

Alot of the uniqueness of the ride the lighting riff particularly is because the song was cowritten by Dave Mustaine before he was kicked out and formed megadeth. His influence is all over the first 2 metallica albums, and many of the solos kirk plays are near note for note adaptations of daves original solos. Ride the lighting and the four horsemen are the two best examples where it's clearly daves technique and songwriting being beautifully adapted by kirk. I personally like dave more but in the mid 80s Kirk's guitar tone and live performance was untouchable and I love how Metallica fuses these separate identities and gives you such a full and complete musical experience.
