The 3 Rs Reading, Ritin, Rithmatic u have heard that. The 3 Rs from people from Kentucky were Reading Ritin Route 23. Route 23 took poor people from Kentucky to factories in Cleveland and Detroit. But when 'hillbillies' got there people weren't very good to them. That's what that song is about

Dwight Yoakam has talked about Route 23 in some of his interviews. He was born in Kentucky but there simply were not many economic opportunities in the area so his parents had to move to Ohio. Route 23 was the highway he took for years to visit the rest of his family in Kentucky. Whenever he sings this song in Kentucky he always receives a huge applause because they understand the genuineness and real life implications of the lyrics.

It took them to the city and to a culture that was vastly different from what they’d left behind. They went from a culture of land, agrarianism and individual freedom to a culture of factory jobs, industrialization, collectivism and urban sprawl.

This was never a single, though I always thought the song was pretty good. You might want to check out some of his hits from this era like "Little Sister", "It Only Hurts When I Cry", or "Little Ways".
