Zhou Shen has the most beautiful voice, even my mum loves his voice. Watched the show because of him and though he didn't end up in the final six, he is a winner to those who loves his voice. Ayunga (one of the best in this show) wanted Zhou Shen for his team in this round but Wang Xi and Zhou Shen wanted so much to sing together explaining they have extactly the same range just octaves apart and wanted to explore this. By the way all the episodes have eng. subtitels and it explains a lot about the friendship all these guys have and their common goal - making bel canto opera more appreciated in China where they are mostly performing to half empty houses.

So, the reason Zhou Shen sounds like a member of those angelic cathedral boys choirs is because his vocal chords are essentially a boy soprano’s. His vocal chords didn’t break during adolescence so he considers himself counter-tenor-like rather than counter-tenor since that usually require techniques that, as I understand it, he doesn’t use. If you want to hear an accurate pronunciation of a Chinese name, go to google translate and copy-n-paste the actual Chinese characters. For Zhou Shen the characters are 周深. (Accurately ‘spelling’ a Chinese name using the latin alphabet is impossible, as many Chinese characters are sound-alikes.) Google Translate can pronounce his name for you...over and over if need be. And if you’re in the mood to do a deep dive, try googling his name in Chinese characters!

This song is often translated as Crescent Moon but as with so many translations from Chinese poetry to English, most things that’d get you an A from your literature professor cannot be gracefully translated. So, since it’s 中秋節 Mid-Autumn Festival today, it’s a perfect time to bring up why the crescent moon is in this song, as today’s a day to sit with family and admire the full moon 🌕, the opposite of a crescent moon. As a harvest celebration, the traditions of Mid-Autumn Festival can include eating rich round mooncakes and trying to round out family gatherings. The concept of ‘round’ conventionally is associated in the Chinese culture with the concept of ‘completeness’ and what a geometry teacher might call ‘QED’. A crescent moon is therefore a lovely visual, evoking the regrets that come with being incomplete.

I understand a small amount of Chinese but we both believe that music can be appreciated all around the world due to the talent of the individual artists. Music is universal. It's also one of the reasons why we work hard on finding translations to songs to help us understand the lyrics. A great artist, however, makes understanding the lyrics unnecessary at times by the way they express their emotions on stage and through their vocal talents. Music has even been the push and shove for people to learn a new language, to travel, to make friends through their shared love of their favorite musician. It brings people together. Why else would artists all around the world travel around and do world tours if they themselves didn't believe in the power of music and its universality? ~ Sabrina
