I love this movie! They say a story is only as good as its antagonist and Dabney Coleman getting his comeuppance is a big part of why this movie is so satisfying!

This is the OG "Office Space".. both films capture a piece of their culture at the time.. And Dolly Parton is fantastic, hard to believe it was her first role. She just comes off so no nonsense.. Really looking forward to the three of them finally reuniting on "Frankie and Grace".

Here are some of my favorite films featuring these cast members: Lily Tomlin: "All Of Me" Jane Fonda: "On Golden Pond" Dolly Parton: "Steel Magnolias" Dabney Coleman: "Short Time"
@ollietsb17043 жыл бұрын
ALL OF ME is probably Tomlin's deservedly 'best' performance because she was matched up well against powerful Steve Martin in an unsympathizable character, and did a bang up job. Jane Fonda did very well in a favorite crime mystery THE MORNING AFTER. I liked Dolly's STRAIGHT TALK matched up against a genuinely unlikeable James Wood, but her work was enjoyable. She really hasn't done a lot of fiction (BEST LI'L WHOREHOUSE, RHINESTONE, a few others, none of which I cared for) but she's delivered her best, at least when matched up against powerhouse co-stars. Good stories, direction, etc and she does well. Smart is smart... good is good.

I have to add 1 more movie apiece to your amazing list: Lily Tomlin: “Big Business” Jane Fonda: “Barbarella” (not an award-winning movie by any means, just a kick in the pants) Dolly Parton: “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” Dabney Coleman: I couldn’t decide between “Cloak & Dagger” or “Tootsie”

The rat poison wasn't on the table she pulled it out of her shopping bag from her locker.... because the other woman threw the empty box of skinny and sweet out. Violet baught both skinny and sweet ( for the office) and rat poison for her home ( refer to the conversation she had with her son)

Dabney Coleman was in a million movies. Really good actor. He brings so much stress to The Man With One Red Shoe.

ONE RED has him at his frenetic best, too. That and SHORT TIME, even WAR GAMES... plus I liked his BUFFALO BILL TV series, him playing essentially the same unlikeable character so well.

What a great reaction! I love this movie. The first time I was it was on a family trip to the drive-in movies, when I was 12 or 13 years old. I laughed so hard when they discovered that the dead body in the trunk was not their boss. 😆😂🤣

I'm old enough to remember the "sweatshop" type of conditions in most offices that is shown at the start of the movie. And for most people in the audience, the conditions at the end were changes that were being talked about, but seemed more like an unattainable utopian workplace. However, over time, the changes have become much more common, which cuts into the satire for people whose memories that don't go back that far.

Since you did this movie and "Office Space" I think you should do "Horrible Bosses." It's not a 80s or 90s movie, but it's along the same line as 9 to 5 and Office Space.

I *love* that you watched this movie! It really is a fun one, and was very forward thinking, considering when it was made. All the leads, including Dabney Coleman, played all the way into their characters, making it a great watch. Glad you enjoyed it, and hope that you have a wonderful time seeing your family in December. Oh, almost forgot, Christmas recommendation: Jingle All The Way.

A multi-color cocaine fuelled feminist power fantasy. That doesn't mean it's bad or wrong, even relevant in today's world. In fact, 9 To 5 is very fun and the ear worm of a song (written by the very talented Dolly Parton) makes this a must watch classic. Fun Fact: This was Dolly Parton's theatrical film debut. In preparation for her role as Doralee Rhodes, she not only committed to memory her own part, but the parts of every other role in the film. Apparently, the two experienced starring actresses, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, burst out laughing when Parton let on that she believed that pictures were filmed in the chronological order of a film's script.

Hey, Kat! Has your tongue healed yet?! You had to bite it so many times in just the first 20 minutes of this movie, I figured "you needed a drink," too! Dabney Coleman surely is one for the "Most Hated Film Characters Ever" list.

Sterling Hayden (the white-suited chairman) is the same actor playing General Jack T. Ripper in DR. STRANGELOVE. Hayden's crime-drama film history is practically a bible in American film noir. He's the corrupt police captain in THE GODFATHER, shot at the cafe table forking a meatball with Sollozzo.

This is my favorite film of Dabney's, and certainly Dolly, Lily and Jane. Dabney turned in quite a lot of favorite films for me, usually playing the same 'Total Jerk Who Gets His' character. Alas, those films are now rarely available while once a staple of American TV, and have been collecting dust for at least 20 years. Dolly's film career took off after this, although she did only a few fiction films - MAGNOLIAS is the one standout. Lily Tomlin was a favorite but, again, was denied many better films. Her INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN is worth a watch but kind of a 30-minute idea beating to a dead-horse feature length film. Her ALL OF ME should be considered a highlight but she's really a secondary character and 9 TO 5 might be bigger, more-lines-of-dialog film for her.
@ollietsb17043 жыл бұрын
This may have my favorite sequence-joke... you state two items first, like Lily Tomlin is expressing her fears. "What'll happen to me? I'll go to the pen..." (friends are reassuring). "I'll be sent up for life..." (more reassurances). "I'll lose my job" (more reassurances) and finally Lily snaps back, "I'm no fool - I've just killed the boss! You don't think they'll fire me for that?!!"

Kat, this is one of these films that was funny and enjoyable, but for whatever reason, it didn't stick with me. In recollecting the good to great comedies of the 80's, it took me a while to remember it. It's not an indictment on it's quality, just that some movies are a little more memorable than others for various reasons. Just the same a very good movie and a very good reaction.

4:15 - You hate being told you can't do something because you're a woman. I'm a man in my sixties with almost 40 years experience in architecture. I have worked with many, many women, and in my whole career I only found FOUR women who were able to do a job as well as a man can. Sorry, but it has been my life's experience that in business men and women are NOT equal. Men and women don't think the same way, and men and women cannot perform certain jobs equally as well. Certainly not in architecture. Face it, men and women are NOT equals! That's just a biological fact of life.
@mastersnet182 жыл бұрын
There is a big difference between being bad at something and happening to be a woman, and being good at something and being told they won’t promote you simply because you are a woman. Big difference. And we are equal, just not the same. The sexes are supposed to complement each other.
@danielfortier26292 жыл бұрын
@@mastersnet18 Maybe they won't promote you because you CAN'T perform as well as a man! The bottom line is PERFORMANCE! If you can't do the job, then you shouldn't be in the job, man or woman! But as I said, in my life's experience, men have been able to better perform at their jobs than women. Period.
