The "wow that guy is rich" part of that video is almost always overlooked, and I feel it is a disservice, because it really happened, and is devilishly clever from wurtz and one of the most hilarious parts of history. The king of Mali, at that time, really decided to visit other lands. He visited other lands with so much gold in his coffers that we have multiple accounts of multiple scholars of multiple countries (who some had no idea where Mali even was) basically saying he bankrupted their countries by offering gold bars for a horse, or things like that. He created economical hyperinflation in at least three separate countries just by himself and his retinue. That's awesome.

I watched a small doc on the king of Mali not long ago. It's amazing. Dude literally unintentionally collapsed multiple economies just trying to show off his swag

Great reaction! A lot of reactors don't say much during this video, because it is so fast paced, but you managed to get your two cents in. You may want to check out the Oversimplified channel next. I think they have 22 videos now. Each is more focused on one event or person, so you don't get the "Drinking from a firehose" effect of this video, but Oversimplified has about the same combination of informativeness and comedy. Their videos, like this one, gets a lot of "I wish they had this when I was in school" responses.

Loving the beatbox reactions but I’m glad you’re spreading out your variety, you’re a proper reaction channel, instead of just watching you put in your input, make it funny, and you’re honest. Btw love the faces!

16:51 Is that why they speak Portuguese in Brazil but Spanish in the rest of South America? No matter how many times you watch this video, there's still new details to catch.
@musical_lolu4811
@musical_lolu4811 4 жыл бұрын
The Portuguese were the first to sail out after the Ottoman blockade further than anybody had previously done. When guys like Henrique the Navigator, Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama set sail to try to circle Africa they went wide into the Atlantic, hitting Brazil in the process, before taking a huge arc to the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa (Henrique didn't reach the tip though). They also hit some islands off the African coast as well as Angola. Vasco da Gama then finally hit Mozambique on his way to India. These countries all speak Portuguese. Brazil had already existed before the Tordesillas deal to let Spain take the Western half of the world. So Spain basically took the rest of South America and Mesoamerica.

I think that the rapid-fire story-telling style is less designed as a teaching tool (although he taught us all a lot), and more designed to pique your interest. "We mentioned the fall of the Bronze Age in passing, so that the Phoenicians can get down to business... Now, go learn about the Bronze Age in more detail, now that you know it exists." I know that once upon a time I learned about the Goturks. "Good job, Goturks." Who on earth were they? I don't know, but it's worth looking them up and finding out. Just like everything that got a brief mention, it was mentioned briefly, so now you know what to ask questions about. Now, go and learn! (At least, that's how I see it.)

I think another reason is the clear moral contrast. I've heard it said that no matter how pacifist you are, if you believe that there is even hypothetically such a thing as a war worth fighting, World War 2 was it. Hitler had to be stopped, at any cost.

Dirt Rules books do not have the reaction in people’s minds as video. Books are by definition stationary. And I do not say this on my own merits, but as one passing on the opinion of a good friend of mine who is a qualified history teacher as well as being a WWI and II military enthusiast. So. Rather than a quick quip that ultimately means nothing but pure sophistry along with one as hominem logical fallacy, how about trying to actually contribute to the discussion?
@theyonlycomeoutwhenitsquiet
@theyonlycomeoutwhenitsquiet 4 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Kraenzlein but why don’t we think of other equally awful tyrants the same way? Distance, and a lack of a visual. Never mind the bias that tends to only look over at Europe. As for Hitler needing to be stopped at all costs, that has more to do with our retrospective lens. We know what wasn’t really known that well during the war, and with the benefit of hindsight and the fact that the allies won we get to say what needed to happen. I don’t say it’s not true. I say that sentiment was not known in all its moral clarity at the time. Most people saying hitler needed to be stopped at all costs then were probably more worried about political things than moral things. As ultimately most wartime decisions are. For instance, the fact that one of the world wars, if I recall correctly, could have been won much sooner for England if they hadn’t also been trying to ensure that Russia would be under too much pressure to immediately take over Afghanistan instead of England. They needed to prolong the war to maintain their stalemate there. That’s not morals. That’s politics and greed, and those drive more decisions than morals. Morals sounds great, but they don’t tend to make a country prosperous. They win elections, not contracts

I wasn't talking about what motivated people at the time, I was talking about why we remember more about WW2 today. Yes, the people of the time didn't fully understand how evil Hitler was. When some rumors of the Holocaust got out at the time, people were reasonably suspicious that these stories might be allied propaganda, at least exaggerated. Of course, we now know that the worst of the stories were fully true, so today we view the sacrifices of WW2 in that light. I'm not suggesting that this is the only reason today's history lessons pay so much more attention to WW2. Reality is generally more complicated than single-reason explanations. I'm just saying that the clear-in-hindsight moral clarity is a big part of the reason.

late to the party but wanted to comment. the story of vlad and the ottoman empire is both horrifying and incredible. vlad was captured and raised in the empire with his brother. while the brother flourished vlad did not.it's believed he was horribly abused and developed a burning hatred for them. it is rumored that when ottoman envoys were at his palace and wouldn't remove their turbans he had them nailed to their heads permanently. he also executed all of the ottoman soldiers he had captured by ,of course, impaling them as to intimidate the sultan when he invaded Wallachia. there many more fascinating stories about his legendary battle tactics

Ghengis didn't take over Africa, but unless you are descended directly from a purely African ancestry on both sides of your family it's at least possible that at least one of your ancestors is related to him. It's something like 1 in 200 people are related to him. Or at least that was what they said in 2010. Oh, also you should watch his history of japan video. It's like this one, but it's all about japan. It's rather good as well.

I agree that school should just show this as a crash course every school year (fitted to age etc.) because I don't remember anything. I mean I "recognize" the places and names but wouldn't be able to connect it to the correct places or persons. I remember "Mesopotamia" my senior year because of a test I kept failing. It's ridiculous. Also, the religion aspect rings true to me because of how no one really knows and 99% of all religions believe the same thing but explain it differently be it Buddhism, Catholic, Christian, Hindu, etc... it's all really the same thing, basically. And power over power and corruption over corruption. Only MAN can kill MAN. And then we are recycled through the space dust back to earth. IMO it is a vicious cycle.

Yeah we all mostly learned history that involved other countries than the one we live in from about WWI. If people learned more history they’d know that there have always been empires and those empires all used slaves from the countries they conquered. A lot of people seem to miss where it accurately states the west African nations were selling African slaves to many places in the world before the transatlantic slave route started. I’m kind of annoyed he didn’t include the slave trade of captured peoples from Europe, especially the Slavic countries. After all that’s where the English word for slave comes from. The British empire traded in slaves too until people started to question the morality of it,during the enlightenment, despite the bible endorsing it. And then began the ending of slavery, with middle eastern countries the last, under pressure, to stop doing it (although Libya is doing it again now). I hope everyone gets a chance to watch 5js video and get some comfort from the fact that despite some bad shit still happening in the world, the world is a much more peaceful place than its ever been and I hope our species finds way to do even better.

That's precisely why it doesn't need explicit mention in a video attempting a broad-but-comprehensive summary of world history: their fingerprints are on most anything in the modern era. Once Columbus's expedition let the European powers figure out "Hey, there's stuff over here," England/GB was as involved as the rest. They're explicitly shown in the video: - Trying to find a way through North America by going through the more northern regions - Caribbean Sugar trade - Transatlantic Slave Trade - War with France over the Ohio River Valley region - Seven Years War - More war with France, which leads to the American colonies revolting and establishment of the U.S.A., which then helps lead to Australia - Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution - Trains - Conquer India - Opium Wars, which leads to Hong Kong - The "Great Game" with Russia over Afghanistan - Indian Revolution -> British Raj - Part of the technological boom of the mid-to-late 19th-century - The "Scramble for Africa" (they never got Ethiopia) - Southeast Asian colonies (they never got Thailand) - Oil in the Middle East (it makes cars go) - Republic of China - World War I - Arab Revolt -> Sykes-Picot Agreement - World War II - Korean War - Ghandi bit - Decolonization -> Neo-colonialism in Africa and SE Asia Not sure what more you could want other than a banner and confetti.
