The story (briefly) is: his parents died when he was 12-13. His father always said: the world has no borders. So he said: then I want to be at the Eurovision Song Contest one day. After the death of his parents, he started searching for the meaning of life (and relief of his pain) by traveling, but never actually found it there. He gave people money (psychologists?) to help him, but it didn't work. Until he realized that he still had time and therefore still had options to realize his dreams. After all, the world has no borders right? And so he did. The burning house represents losing but also moving on, in a positive way. Burning your bridges: no longer controlled by pain and sadness, but focused on your dreams. Without limitations.

Something even most of my fellow Dutch aren't aware of is the wrapping sadness in happiness, and switching between fun and serious, is a very Dutch thing. As far I can see it started in the early 70s with comedy duo Neerlands Hoop and when Freek de Jonge went solo in the 80s he developed it further (a bit over the top at times). In music by that time Madness (a ska band from England for those who don't know) did that in music (their hit Embarrasment, a happy sounding song) is about a sister of a band member being initially rejected by her family for having a child with a black man. Turkish-German comedian Serdar Somuncu has Dutch family and part of his training was at the music academy in Maastricht, The Netherlands. That might be how he picked up bits of the Dutch style, with is different from the stand-up all jokes all the time style. He's also very opiniated and doesn't hold back, another thing Dutch are known for.
