If you know nothing of Kate Bush but enjoyed this then you should probably check out some of her other work. She is a very diverse and unique artist. Try with something more mainstream like "this woman's work" and her wonder colab' with Peter Gabriel "Don't give up" and then you might appreciate her more artistic and experimental work.

Very nice reaction... Here's a a quick background summary of Kate Bush, Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. By her mid-teens she had written more than a hundred songs (some reports say nearer two hundred), the family made demo recordings of about fifty, in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour guitarist for pink Floyd, he was interested and ultimately paid for time at studio with session musicians to make professional recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talents - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old. EMI paid Kate a retainer which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie dance). Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the professional recordings that Davie Gilmour had paid for - one of those songs was written when she was 13. Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK and album charts. When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the album chart. Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director. Kate was also heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 concert residency "Before The Dawn". Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and pioneer. Kate was a co-producer on her third album "Never For Ever" and was the sole producer on her fourth album "The Dreaming" and every subsequent studio album after. If you're interested in listening to more Kate Bush songs I and many other Kate Bush fans will be happy to provide suggestions. At this point you can listen to more of Kate's music from this era (1985) and follow up with the other single releases from her iconic "Hounds Of Love" studio album, the singles being Cloudbusting, "Hounds Of Love" and "The Big Sky". The album is unusual in that it has too distinct sides to it, the "A side" contains the more commercial tracks like "Running Up That Hil", etc. The "B side" is a concept piece of a suite of songs starting with "And Dream Of Sheep" which is collectively titled "The Ninth Wave". In her "Before The Dawn" concert Kate performed the entire "Ninth Wave" - only "And Dream Of Sheep" wasn't live on stage, instead the audience was treated to a video of Kate performing the song live projected onto a massive screen. The video of Kate's live performance does show precisely what the concept is.. Another Kate Bush song around this time was the 1986 duet she had with Peter Gabriel on his song "Don't Give Up" the concept for the official music video is so simple, but it fits the song perfectly. I do know that some people who have been newly introduced to Kate Bush, have decided to dive into her extensive catalogue of music, by listening to singles or entire albums in release order, this enables the listener to qain an understanding of how Kate evolved as an artist over the years. Since you liked the timeless and classic "Running Up That Hill", I hope that you will ultimately decide to dive deeper in mto Kate's music, becsuse there'sso much great high qualitymaterial to listen to... All the best... .

I think you could have made that a little more concise but very informative. I would only add that a very good way to become aquainted with her music and it's inventiveness and diversity would be to merely sit and listen to The Ninth Wave in its entirety. It would certainly be a small sampling but potent and exemplary.

Kate was a trained dancer. She got signed up at 17 as her brother knew Dave Gilmore of Pink Floyd, who championed her to the record labels. Very quirky style and ahead of her time in the late 70's.

If you are up for another Kate Bush song it would be interesting to see you react to ‘Wuthering Heights’. This is an unconventional song that you would not react to with indifference. It launched her career in 1978 at age 19 and went to No. 1 in the UK charts, staying there for four weeks. To help you understand the song and the performance, if you choose to do it, she is singing in character as a ghost come back to haunt her lover.

Yes, that is Kate Bush in the video. She is a singer, musician, dancer, choreographer, an all-round performer, artist. If you like this and start delving into her music, you'll be blown away. She is a phenomenally talented human being. One of the members of Pink Floyd heard some her stuff and helped get her a record made at 18, made entirely of her owns song, which she had written at 15, 16, 17. None of her songs, at any point in her career have ever fit into any genre or followed the trends at the time. She is a true one-of-a-kind, like David Bowie, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne, David Sylvian etc...

Nice reaction. As a Brit the same age as Kate, and a fan of hers since the start of her career back in 1978 when she was 19, I am often saddened when reminded that she never made it big in the States, despite having a very loyal small cult following there. America stood out alone as a significant music market that didn’t embrace her. She was huge globally and the list of artists coming after her who cite her as an influence is immense. Many regard her as the greatest living female artist. I have heard a number of reasons for why she didn’t make it big in the States that seem valid to me. To begin with, she never toured there and generally has only done the bare minimum to promote her work with few interviews. She only toured once, a 6-week tour of the UK and Europe in 1979. The tour was considered groundbreaking, incorporating a strong visual element including dance, mime, magic and poetry, and first use of a prototype radio mic that allowed Kate to sing and dance at the same time. But the tour took a lot out of her and being a shy, softly spoken and very humble person she didn’t feel comfortable with the public exposure. She never did live stage concerts again until 2014 when she surprised everyone by returning to the stage for a 6-week residency in London. Another problem with breaking into the American market was that she was ahead of her time and her pioneering arty and progressive music, songwriting and singing style didn’t align well with American mainstream tastes at that time. She didn’t really fit neatly into any of the established music genres (art pop/art rock/prog rock are the ones most often mentioned) which made it difficult to fit her into America’s format driven radio network. It was really only college radio that exposed her to young Americans. It also didn’t help that the American release of her early albums were delayed by 2-3 years. This was because she refused a support slot on Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours tour (feeling that a 20-minute slot wouldn’t allow the visual presentation of her work that she felt was so important) leading to the record company/American distributor feeling there wasn’t enough promotion for the albums to succeed. I don’t think Kate was at all bothered by this. As first and foremost a songwriter, who then learned to sing and dance, and then to produce, she never wanted fame and fortune. As she herself said, she just wanted to make albums that she hoped people would like. After doing the required promotion for a new release she would usually disappear for 2-3 years to work on her next album, earning her the mistaken reputation of being a recluse.

A lot of Kate's music and lyrics were born of love of nature and an appreciation of celtic/folk music. Some people liken Tori Amos to her.... I'm not sure about that but I'm sure you would love either "This Woman's Work" or "Coud Busting"....also "Hounds of Love" is a classic.

Great reaction, funny haha. You've dipped your toe into a deep deep well here. If you want to try something unlike anything anyone else did back then, now too actually, you could try either Houdini or Get out of my House. Sadly she went under the radar in America BUT is hugely influential, reminiscent of Rush, not in style but in the depth and number of people she influenced. Luckily I saw her live and she blew me away.

Hounds of Love is a superb album. Her first three albums were very special, too. That's not to say others weren't, but those are the ones I've played most, and do still to this day. Aged 19, she topped the UK charts for four weeks, with Wuthering Heights; and became the first female songwriter/composer to get to number 1. It's not, in my opinion, her greatest song, but the innovation does hint at how special she is.

Bush said the lyrics address the inability of men and women to understand each other. She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding. The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries. The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)". The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu. The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance." The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.".
