That solo is one of if not the best in guitar history. Alex is extremely talented at putting so much emotion into it. That guitar is alive and singing with its own voice.

Saw Rush in concert a dozen times or more. My wife was closer to 15 times. The Time Machine tour was the first tour I took my kids to. The opening on La Villa Strangiato was a tie in back to the opening video they used for each evenings show on this tour. Nothing like a 3 hour concert put on by 3 guys that absolutely love what they're doing and want to share their talent with as many people as possible. I cry nearly every time I see a new fan discover their music because they'll never get to experience their talents on a live stage.

I saw Rush here in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1984. The best concert I've ever seen, tied with G3 at Massey Hall (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson) (any of which you should look up as well! Hit me up for song reccos). Later, when I was in my 20's, I transcribed La Villa Strangiato for piano. Had to be selective as to what I took from the song (hell, I can't play three instruments at once!), but it turned out great, using the main guitar and bass lines as the basis. I actually had a recording of it... lost to the mists of time now. I did a number of Rush songs at the time: Red Barchetta, Spirit of Radio, and The Camera Eye I remember. I could recreate them, I guess, but it wouldn't be the same. Thanks for the reminder of that transcription. I've been watching Rush reactions for a while now, and subscribed because of your reactions. I watch channels for the content; I subscribe because of the personalities. Cheers.

The Clockwork Angels tour in 2012 was steampunk. That album got them into the Hall of Fame. I saw that tour. My ears quit ringing by lunch the next day. I saw Styx in 78 and my ears rang the whole next day. Rush is made to be played LOUD! You can't hear the subtle sounds at less volume!

I was a latecomer to Rush and jumped on the Bandwagon just before the Presto Tour in the late 80's. I have since seen Rush live 26 times. Discovering this Band and their unmatched talent literally changed my life. I would humbly like to recommend another band that technically is Canadian/American called Big Wreck. IMO, the front-man of this band is in the same realm as Geddy, Alex and Neil as a master songwriter, vocalist and guitar player. A good starting point on youtube would be "Big Wreck - Ghosts (LIVE at the Suhr Factory Party 2015)" . This band still tours and it would not be too late to catch a show if you fall in love with Ian's singing and playing.

You know, I love your guys take on Rush. I really do. Guess that's obvious because I return to add more. lol Amidst their amazing portrayal of riffs, highs, lows, the darker side, the uptick in momentum, to simply just rising in spirit by pumping out some ridiculously hard creations that mesmerize... Many often overlook the fact their so captivating (but you can't dance to most their music.) In my eyes not a flaw at all but as much as myself and all my friends used to rip it up on a dance floor... Most didn't care. But at the time top-40 bands in bars were very popular so there was a lot more partying and dancing going on. Critics were already merciless toward Rush. Harsh because they were bringing a 'package' that didn't fit their form on the radio. It didn't help that what they delivered at times wasn't captured well in recordings live on stage. Many of these songs on early albums (in my opinion) were deliberate reactions of Rush shoving it back in critics faces showing just how good they really were. There were no answers from critics. Fans and many other musicians themselves were their sanctity. Alex's play in this piece was amazingly brilliant yet it fell on deaf ears. They knew they were knocking it out of the park. They goof around albeit teasing the critics. Off-beat tempo's, silly riffs, in my heart all a muse mocking the critics. It spoke volumes and people loved it.

Pay attention and hear the difference. Geddy has a bass and a 6 string guitar on his. He primarily plays the bass but you will notice him strumming the 6 string occasionally. Mainly in this song and Xanadu. Cheers to all Rush fans.

I had always heard musicians say they wanted to jam and kinda wondered exactly what they meant. Watch Rush to get a definition of jamming - they mesh flawlessly together and each have their own little added bits into the main composition - it's just amazing to watch these three gentlemen play something as intricate and complex as this and they are all just having a blast and smiling the whole thing through. JAMMING RIP Professor 🙏

Hi Kayla and Eddie - Thanks for this. I think you can see/hear two important things regarding the general thoughts on Rush. First, compositions like this don't make for good radio play. Too long and complicated and too subtle in many spots where you just need to be engaged to experience it properly. Second is the live performance and sound. I know this is no longer possible, but it's true for any great live music performance. Rush live simply makes you a fan for life. There are lots of live recordings like this one that are great and you two rightly let Alex's guitar lead take you away. That being said, the difference in sound and experience from this recording and what it sounds like live is just night and day. I got to see three Rush concerts and the third one, my two nephews (age 13-16) went with me and two new Rush fans were born.

This entire album, "Hemispheres," and the album before it, "A Farewell to Kings" are both very similar, and completely amazing. Hemispheres really feel like a completion to A Farewell to Kings, and in fact, there's a song on AFtK titled "Cygnus X1" which is a 2 part song, where the second song is the title track of Hemispheres. While I love all Rush albums, my 3 favorite Rush albums are Hemispheres, AFtK, and "Caress of Steel," an album that doesn't get anywhere near enough respect. Their rock concerts were EPIC, and the crowd always felt they got their moneys worth!

I'm a month late, but the first guitar solo is one of the great solos in rock music ever. When they first recorded this song they wanted to record the whole thing in one take, but they couldn't do it at the time. I think the official video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3yUmaB6pcZrmNE) is them doing it the whole thing "live" in a theater but with no audience. It almost seemed like they were saying "ok, we can do that now". They definitely could because I think they did it for the encore (sometime in the set) when I saw them way way back on the Hemispheres tour, when this song would've been new.

I would highly recommend their magnum opus, 2112. I'd recommend the official video version so you can get the whole story. It's presented comic book style and has background notes to tie each section together.

Neil is playing some of these transitions by going UP....who does that? Neil that is who. and makes it work. All of this is based off of Alex's nightmares. Once of their greater songs they have ever done. great job guys. keep it up. welcome to the rabbit hole.
