Everyone will say do live and, as much as I do love ALL the live versions that are out there, on this album track everything is perfection. RP can have a bit of an off night on some of the live versions - same for Jimmy, even JPJ has been known to have a very rare lacklustre live NQ!! Thinking of Bonzo today RIP 😪

No Quarter makes me think of The Lord of the Rings when Frodo and Samwise, and Merry and Pippen were being stalked by the ring wraiths in the woods going to Bree to supposedly meet up with Gandalf, but crossed paths with Strider at the Prancing Pony instead and headed to Weather Top to camp for the night.

Vikings!!! (aka Norsemen) Winds of Thor (Viking god of thunder). Wearing steel.... They go where no others go, being masters of the sea... And they hold "No Quarter" they kill all they conquer... Brutal song..
@leonardsimonis2376
@leonardsimonis2376 2 жыл бұрын
I think this song tells the story of a viking sort of warrior. He closes the door and puts out the light and leaves his home, because his family won't be home tonight. It is winter, and he is leaving to fight some battle (maybe a fight for the honor of Thor). Maybe it's a faith war, in which they see themselves as the rightful side (wearing "true" steel, and trying to convert others), and they would kill to "bring the message" through - they have to do what their god says, they have to convice others to believe. And they kill everyone who stands in their way and refuses to obey. They show no quarter. They do the ugly work, the bloody work, they chose a path where no-one would go who has some sort of conscience. So literally, they're walking side-by-side with death. However, their holy war also takes sacrifices of them as well. All the killing and fighting doesn't bring them closer to their god, but rather makes them live in a living hell. They can't find peace and live their lives - that's why the devil mocks them. They're so close to hell that they even can hear the hell hounds howl already. And the winter and the hard conditions of traveling around searching for enemies to kill is taking a lot of strength - and all those who can't do it any longer physically or psychologially are left behind. And others simply die out of exhaustion (the snow drives back the foot that's slow). But they cling themselves to the hope that if they carry on delivering the truth (fighting for their god) they will be able to reach some sort of paradise. They believe in the end it'll be worth it. So they keep on doing what they do, without quarter. And they're getting even closer to hell, and there's no paradise that awaits them but the dogs of doom that are howling more... The dark lyrics are also surrounded by the dark sound of the instrumentals. They recorded the song in d minor and tuned it down after mixing it half a step so it would sound a little reverbed and darker. It all comes together so perfectly. Maybe this is my favourite Led Zeppelin song, but only until I hear Achilles Last Stand again...

Live TSRTS version > studio version… The slow, brooding middle section is incredible. JPJ and Bonham settle into an amazing groove… Jimmy’s solo starts as a smoldering ember before it grows and unfolds into a raging inferno 🔥 it might be my favorite JP solo… and the fact that it’s live is mind blowing.

Jones for this track used a Honer Electra Piano (live version Fender Rhodes), the trusty EMS VCS3 for the wobbly water ripple effect, and on his bass early versions of the amazing Mr Moog’s Taurus Bass pedal. Page used Vari-speed to lower the song a half tone and plugged his guitar directly into the console and turned the pre amp gain up to get the sound of a fuzz pedal (but not) 🎵🎶

I Like like the way that DJ just accepts, at this point, that his mind is going to get blown. Ha ha! I’m not so sure how healthy some of these reactions are for some people. I mean they are cramming a LOT into a short time frame what it took us years to organically absorb you know? Still, there are some reactors I would love to be the tour guide in the Rock & Roll time machine, to show them what it really was like. Of course to revisit some of these concerts and to laugh my ass off at them watching their brains melt live. Ahhh....good times man, good times.

Hey guys, I know showing up late to the party is bad form. However, I went back a bit and got caught up. With the exception of their first album, all of these albums broke while I was a teen. DJ, your reaction is no different than anyone else’s upon first listen. We were all stunned. Then we’d drop the needle and start over again. Did this with my son’s years ago, and it still brings back all it was meant too. It’s remarkable looking back now, at the “embarrassment of riches” these four men produced. Regards, from a new subscriber.

Dazed and Confused is Jimmy's showpiece and this one is Jonesy's. Played live, Jonesy would improvise all sorts of piano noodling, often drawing on his love of jazz; you'd feel like you were in a jazz club until they would finally come back out of it, often times with a bit of theremin played by Jimmy. I believe the lyrics are another relative to LOTR stylings. In LOTR the Nine must travel over the mountains where they are attacked by the efforts of Saruman and forced to go through Moria. The "winds of Thor are blowing cold", I don't believe refer to the Norse god of thunder but (like the real Misty Mountains in Wales) refer to a real mountain; Mount Thor located in Canada which has the highest vertical drop on the planet. Zep's version has a spacey vibe but with warmth, while, IMO Tool's version sounds spacey, cold, and bleak.
