The song is not just a vehicle to highlight the background singers. It is a key part of their classic "Dark Side of the Moon" album. Clare Torry, not present on this tour, was the original single vocalist on this track. Highly recommend you check that version out at your earliest opportunity.
@phillee28143 жыл бұрын
Clare eventually (and very belatedly) rightfully recieved a co-wrting credit as she ad-libbed the whole thing. She actually did it in one take, although they insisted on a 2nd in case it could be improved. Then a third, which she knew was worse and stopped part way through. They tried cutting it into sections and mixing to give the best from each, but Clare was certain that the whole recorded version was actually from her first, original take.

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

Sam Brown had a solo hit with 'Stop'. She also stole the show at the tribute concert for George Harrison with 'Horse To The Water' (unfortunately there are only short clips on youtube). She's also recorded a few songs with Jon Lord from Deep Purple. Sadly, she lost her singing voice after an operation on her vocal cords. Durga McBroom was the lead singer of the band Blue Pearl and had a minor hit with 'Naked In The Rain'.

Oh man how tragic for a singer to lose her singing voice. Well this will live on forever and be appreciated but man
@jonhenke15043 жыл бұрын
The emotion of the song is basically dealing with the five stages of death "denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance" thus the first part of the song with the extreme vocalizing then the farther it gets into it it changes near the end when it's calming and quiets down which is the acceptance part. You should listen just once to the original Claire Torry version on Dark Side of the Moon the album itself. Talk about knocking something out of the park Clare Torry does, it's fairly phenomenal that she did that just off-the-cuff! She originally started off singing ooh baby ooh baby type singing and the Floyd didn't want that. So on her own she decided to make her voice like another instrument and if you hear that original version you'll probably agree it's like a unique instrument, her voice!!

The tall black lady her name is Durga McBroom. She is from Los Angeles The shorter of the two is Lorelei McBroom Yes they are sister's. On the delicate sound of thunder C. D. The live film from that tour you had Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom, Margaret Taylor. In Pompeii 2016 they added a male backup singer. He can sing almost as good as David. I have to give him credit because he's that good. He just don't look as good as the ladies. 😜🤔 Oh yes in the middle of the McBroom sisters is Gloria Fontaine. She's done it by herself on other track's. But all three together. My good gracious Lord my God thank you for Pink Floyd.

This one Pink Floyd song where a listen to the studio version is a Must. A little context; on the "Dark Side of The Moon" album this song follows "Time" where Time talks about life from childhood to death and how we waist so much of our time before it's too late... then "Great Gig in the Sky" is about dying and the stages grieving. In the studio version Clare Torry absolutely delivers in the emotion of the piece. These ladies did a fine job here but it doesn't compare to what Clare did. Do yourself a favor and go give it a listen, preferably after you hear Time, to get the full effect.

PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY". Sung by Clare Torry from the iconic Album: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. This song was was about all the emotions while she's getting closer too her dying. The pain, frustration, denial, depression...which leads up, attempting to hang on until she realizes her realization, and acceptance of her final moments as she is heard echoing, and quietly fading with the final piano chord... then complete silence.

One of the most incredibly touching tracks Floyd has ever produced and absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to replicate in concert. This kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHi7aIWuqLmBo9E is a show they did in 1990 with Claire Tori, the original woman who “sung” this incredible masterpiece in ONE take and a can of Heineken. It’s about life. Birth, growing up, adulthood, growing older and death. The only lyrics are those in the very beginning, the muffled background voice of a misleading-aged man stating, he wasn’t afraid of dying... there’s no reason for it. Great reaction kid!

Just a little trivia for you Key .... Clare Torry, the female vocalist in the original studio version, was brought in for this recording and without any prior exposure to the musical score and with no practice she laid that track down perfectly in one take. You can never get enough of Pink Floyd! Clare Torry did an astonishing performance on the studio album, but I like the dynamic that three different voices bring to the piece. The live version on David Gilmour’s 2016 ‘Live in Pompeii’ performance has two women and a man performing this track, and singing in harmony: another great variation of this classic.

If you listen to the studio version you will get an idea of what they are trying to reproduce on stage. Which is what all live shows are about...reproducing the studio version of a song. The original (and best in most people's opinion is the singular voice of Clare Tory - who has the vocal range to match ALL these singers here!!!) is by far the better version. If you decide to listen to the studio version search for and listen to the remastered version as it has a lot of background sounds and vocals that add to the ambience to the track. Try it and I dare you tell me that Clare's voice isn't better...I DARE you.
