Rick's self image relies on him being the most capable, the smartest and/or skilled person in the universe. We all need someone, it might not be much but 1 friend can go a long way in keeping you sane. If Rick ever admitted to himself that he needs someone else that would in a way fracture his view of himself, he wouldn't be the smartest man in the universe anymore in his own mind, because how could he be if he is so weak that he needs others? And if he accepted the fact that he needs others he would have to come to terms with the way he treated other people as lesser because they need help, like for example Jerry. He would have to face the fact that he is an absolute douche. A lot of things play into this last scene, where he can feel first hand how much of an asshole he is via being insulted by his own holograms, all that effort just to insult someone who wanted to be his friend, so much effort to figuratively shit on a dead man's grave. Facing all of that would be hard for anyone who has a lot of compassion, which Rick clearly has as evidenced by the fact that he made an entire simulated heaven just for all the people who annoyed him. He arguably shouldn't give a damn, as he knows there are infinite realities, some where he killed them and some where he didn't and still he doesn't kill them, doesn't even torture them in the fake reality he actually makes them happy, which he absolutely didn't have to do. I believe Rick puts so much effort into showing that he does not care about people, the universe and everything, not because he wants to convince others, as shown with his crappy disguises he sometimes uses (like in the miniverse episode in his car battery or the decoy family episode) which are lazy, no he does it to fool himself, because maybe if he just says "I don't give a fuck." enough times he might fool himself into believing it, one day.

@@pedrof6767 S4E1 was about Morty's Illusion of a happy future, the wafer cookies on the citatel about Rick(s)'s memories of Beth's childhood and this now is used/liked by Jerry. All three are somehow about escaping the present/reality. And the respective episodes are about problems introduced by the maincharacters. So the simulations Rick spots are used by outsiders/enemies. Yet Rick is generally open to drug experiences or the Roy simulation game.

These sprinkled heavy moments in the show are honestly what keep the show interesting for me. I feel like if it was nothing but just Rick being an ass it wouldn't be as good and almost definitely not rewatchable. Like in real life usually the people who act like douchebags and who pretend like nothing around them matters are the most emotionally wrecked individuals. I mean Bird person once said that Rick's catch phrase meant help me please I'm in great pain.
