Don’t be too hard on yourself for not knowing about her, the truth is she’s not interested in fame/fortune & has turned down all the major record companies instead she says she hopes to use her voice to bring comfort to those experiencing difficult times. She is a cancer survivor & says that her voice is a gift from god. She is a mix of all the best bits of Whitney, feline & Mariah & you I’m sure will be recommended her renditions of a couple of Whitney songs in particular, firstly her performance of ‘I have nothing’ at the DMC festival & her rendition of ‘I will always love you’ from the ‘begin again Korea’ series ( filmed in front of small audiences during the pandemic. If you get past ‘if I’ before the chills set in then you are doing better than I did & as a Sohyang fan for 5 yrs or so you would think I’d be used to her ‘amazingness’ by now. I actually found it funny watching your reaction because I forget that some people are seeing Sohyang for the first time & your reaction was very similar to my own & many others because like you, ‘bridge over troubled water’ was my first experience of Sohyang. Don’t worry about not been able to express in words what you think because I have seen many experienced vocal coaches/musicians/other vocalists be utterly gobsmacked by her vocals. She speaks pretty good English so she doesn’t have an obvious Asian accent when she sings in English. Although technically she is top of the pile,where she really excels is with her ability to emote & tell a story through a song, like no other & i would suggest that if you continue with your discovery of this beautiful human being you should maybe prepare yourself by having a handkerchief nearby, just in case!!!! Also, never be put off a performance in her native korean because although it would be good if you could get eng subs (Vimeo usually provide eng subs for Sohyang performances) it will only enhance your enjoyment of the performance, it will not however spoil your enjoyment if you don’t because somehow, this angel has a way of still making you ‘feel’ & understand what the song is about, even when you have no idea what the lyrics are. Anyhow, in my experience, even when subs are provided, I have been so mesmerised by her voice that I haven’t even looked at the subs. I am sure you’ve ill have lots of new subscribers now because of Sohyang but beware, this lady, or rather the quality of her performances, is very addictive & why wouldn’t it be when the quality of one performance after another is of the same high quality, or higher even, than the one you have just watched. She can literally sing any genre & this is backed up with performances, all live (apart from her rendition of ‘never enough’, which is a rare music video for her, the video itself been a masterpiece). You’ll hear her sing rock,pop, the big ballads, blues/jazz & she can even rap (a song called ‘day day’) but her heart is in gospel. She does the arrangements to all her performances & more often than not, when doing a cover song, it will be quite different from the original & in my opinion, always better but she very definitely makes the song her own. Finally, for now, I think to sum this angel up in one sentence, I always say that Sohyang is as beautiful on the inside as her voice is on the outside.! Sohyang became a Christian at 18 and at 19 planned to be an artist but was helping out the band POS since they had no lead singer. She met the drummer who she married only a year later and continued singing. Because of her upcoming marriage she went for a checkup where they discovered she had early stage uterine or ovarian cancer (unsure which) She went into surgery to remove the left side but they found it on the right side too and they removed both leaving her unable to have children. :/ She contracted hepatitis through the blood transfusion and this left her for many years with recurring bouts of pneumonia. Due to her faith and her health you will never find her on a large label. Even though she has been free from pneumonia for a few years now she gets tired you can see in some of her clips. I try and avoid clips where she looks tied or ill. She was healthy all through Immortal Songs 2 except for 'You Raise Me Up' but that is a special performance not to be missed even though the doctor advised her not to sing. She actually had thoughts of quitting and thought that was her last performance-we are so glad that she didn't quit. This lady has been through the wringer but is so sweet and generous, singing to spread God's love and to heal and comfort others, not for money or fame.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a survivor of uterine cancer from the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in South Korea or Japan. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbCfWylm82Iqpo She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on KZbin. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZbin and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. These include 'Raise Me Up', 'Lean On Me', 'I Have Nothing', and 'Arirang Alone'. However, I would also check out her appearances on 'King of Masked Singer', which is where I first was exposed to her. She does not do any social media and rarely appears outside of Korea. I'll leave it to others to share her impressive backstory. But, I will highly recommend at some point checking out her appearances last year on a show called 'Begin Again'. It features a group of popular singers and musicians performing acoustic, "busking"-style , pop-up concerts to comfort the Korean people during the pandemic. So Hyang, her husband, and some assistants, arrange all of the music for her live performances. In my opinion, this is the BEST version of this classic song. Believe it or not, this song showcases ONLY a small fraction of the flexibility in her voice. So Hyang's vocal range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE. So Hyang is a 43 year old gospel singer and devout Christian from South Korea. She was 37 years old at the time of this performance. In 2021, her technique is still ROCK SOLID. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. No one _ever_ expects the absolute rocket ride they get the first time they hear So Hyang sing--especially this song. She is like going from 0 mph to 1000 mph in an instant. She is just so far above all the other female singers in the world that it is almost impossible to make a comparison to her. You can't imagine the incredible pleasure we get from seeing someone new discover So Hyang sing this version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water"! The look on people's faces is simply one of the great things about life! Glad you enjoyed it, if that is a sufficient description! I put a biography of So Hyang just below here that will give you some idea of what an absolutely extraordinary woman she is! 👌😉💖😎🎶 PS So Hyang is pronounced So, as in "so what", and hYong, as in Yong pronounced like song with just a slight "h" sound before it. This can be be quite hard for us English speakers to say correctly because "Hy" pronounced as two consecutive consonants doesn't exist in English. We would say it like we do hypodermic because English requires a vowel between consonants but in Korean it doesn't. I hope that helps you get a bit of a grip on it but if it doesn't just call her So Young exactly as that would be spoken in English, and no one will blame you for it! Ha, ha! And in addition to what is in her biography I placed just below this, So Hyang also reads Chinese and Greek. I don't know what her IQ is but it must be on the massive side! 💪

Congratulations on making your acquaintance with Sohyang, my favorite singer with a gifted voice and impeccable techniques. Her technical prowess amazes the most meticulous vocal professionals and the emotional context she delivers in her voice is just such a sublime treasure that captivates our soul. It's almost too unfair to be introduced to her via this iconic cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water. I know because this is how I got to know her, and it changes completely my expectation of singing. Sohyang is an artist with a golden voice, and even a more admirable soul that emits compassion, comfort and empathy. You haven’t heard anything yet. If you want to skip to her masterpiece check out Everyone. The Vimeo version has English subtitles which you will want. It’s the only performance of that song so far as she says it was very hard to perform and she may not do it again. Arirang alone is superb as well. He pitch is flawless. Her range is stunning. She is beautiful. She has record labels from all over the world trying to get her to sign with them but she just wants to support her church and sing for God. I watched your reaction video with great interest and I was so much! I am a Korean. Sohyang is also Korean, and she was born in Korea in 1978. She is a uterine cancer survivor. I have gained much from hearing and seeing your reaction. I too asked where I've been to have missed out on a generational, maybe the best female vocalist in my lifetime who communicates so deeply. Hearing more of her background helps make sense of this relative obscurity, but I'm blessed to hear her moving songs. I questioned if I was in overreacting when I first heard her, but why then still blown away after hearing the same songs many times?

The H and Y are blended together. If you say "So-Young" you won't be too far off. Your title is missing the letter Y, you may want to add that. Sohyang is a South Korean gospel singer, author, cancer survivor and an absolute inspiration. She is stunning in every way you can imagine. :) This show is Immortal Songs 2, its a contest between well known Korean artists. Each show has a theme, this one being 'English pop songs' each artist reinterprets the song they have picked. Sohyang won this episode with this song. Do be careful of Korean broadcasters and blocks and copy write strikes. Many people find they have to cover the video with some kind of filter. I would suggest "Arirang Alone" from Immortal Songs 2 (IS2) next on her playlist.

Always such a joy to see people watching this beautiful soul Sohyang for the first time. Her back story is moving. I’m sure you’ll enjoy her big stage performances that are often suggested/reacted to and they are incredible, but if you want to hear something recent and quite acoustic I recommend either „Stay“ or „Love poem“ from a show called „Begin Again“ or her cover of „I will always love you“ (also „Begin Again“) - watch out for the saxophone part 😉

Shane Felan of Westlife (who is in the audience) acknowledged this fantastic gospel inspired rendition as the best version of this song ....including Westlife's! However, in my opinion her finest performance on KZbin is 'Everyone', sung in a mix of her native Korean and English. There's a reason SoHyang sounds angelic or other worldly. I watched an interview she was on and she said the Lord told her not to practice so much. ( She is a perfectionist and a devout Christian) She asked Jesus why she shouldn't practice so much and He said " When you practice so much: you don't leave room for Me and I want to sing through you." There are other singers who also have such a high note like her, and they can 'surprise' me. However she can make me 'teary'. She always touch my heart with her sincerity and takes all audiences to her own place with full emotion and perfect technique. Let's go to her "You raise me up" and "Lean on me " from the same TV show. You will be speechless again!

She has never wanted fame or money. This is why not many know of her and this includes those in her country. She sings for Gods gory and to help those in a bad way, feel better. I saw someone trying to spell how to pronounce her name, but he is wrong. I have her her pronounce her own name. I will link a video where she sang the US national anthem at an NBA game, and in the beginning, the announcer nails how her name is pronounced. I am guess he asked her personally so he would get it right since she was in the states singing, but lived in S. Korea. Actually, So Hyang admitted in an interview from 2019 that she secretly did want the fame and success. But she now believes that it was making her arrogant and difficult for other people to even be around her, so she thinks God put a complete stop to her career until she got over that desire. Now she has completely turned away from the path to worldwide fame and riches, and only puts out her music on a local label in South Korea and through her live performances being posted on KZbin. But she is basically a national treasure in South Korea and has no end of concerts, TV appearances and church engagements to keep up with and she must be doing extremely well in every department now.

Read up on a guy named Balaam in the Old Testament. But some people actually are followers of Jesus Christ and truly do believe in spreading the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and housing the homeless. "You shall know them by their fruits," as Jesus said 2000 years ago. Real Christians want to live for eternity as spirit beings in God's kingdom where righteousness dwells, with the New Heavens and the New Earth in the New Jerusalem. Sounds kind of simple but it is true. No more of any of the ailments of being a human, which are many.

I noticed that during the "Begin Again Korea" series, whenever So Hyang started to sing the younger K-Pop stars all stopped what they were doing and paid rapt attention to So Hyang's voice. It was like they were stunned and hypnotized by how pristine and utterly pure it was. I think they were _all_ in awe of her and couldn't help but show it. _The_ master vocalist was in their presence and their dropped jaws proved it! 🤷‍♂️👍

There are and will be better technically better and beautiful voice singers than Sohyang but I find Sohyang's voice is honest sincere beautiful unlike them simply beautiful.
