Whenever someone dies tragically on Star Trek... I always remember Q's line: "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid." The same thing applies to relationships and exploring them... sometimes you get burned.

I think the scene as Data is left alone after the "breakup" is interesting in how it feels to watch. Data is supposed to be emotionally unaffected by the course of events... so why does watching his being alone in the room and picking up his cat feel sad?

The ending scene with Spot and Data seems more interesting to me in hindsight than it was when I originally saw it. Spot seems perfectly fine with Data's companionship. Spot doesn't seem upset or dissatisfied that Data can't give him affection. Data feeds him, pets him, talks to him - Data does what Spot needs him to do. That makes me wonder: given enough time, could Data have learned what behaviors Jenna needed from him to be a fulfilling partner for her despite his lack of emotions? Obviously, cats are easier to please than people, but the premise is the same.

Nah, completely different emotions, Attachment issues and reactions are just a part of a romantic relationship that aren’t present in a friendship. A very good friend to Data wouldn’t require him to access emotions in the same way they did, but if that friend tried to be in a romantic relationship with him, they would find those differences more hurtful. It would be natural to feel so.

Gene Roddenberry was never a big fan of pure relationship stories. He didn't like overly comedic elements either. I know writers (even in the TOS era) pushed back against that, but they did try to honor his vision too. The B plot might have been included for that reason. They might have also thought they didn't have enough content for an A plot only or that the pacing was too slow with just the relationship piece. For me, the problem with the solution they chose is that the tone of the plots did not seem to go together. A different B plot could very well have worked better. Another option would have been for the B plot to have turned out to connect back to the A plot in some way.

Perhaps controversially, I actually prefer the b-plot of this episode. Don’t get me wrong, I love Data as much as the next person. It just feels very interesting following the slowly-building mystery of what’s causing things to fall over and move around on the ship. It’s horrific when Van Mayter ends-up falling through the deck and then rematerialising inside it. But it’s also really cool seeing Picard lead the Enterprise out of the nebula. It’s such a great visual of the tiny shuttlepod leading the massive ship out like that.😀👏

Gene Roddenberry hated TNG 'Family', and I believe his quote was "this isn't Star Trek." I am guessing that mindset also caused this episode's forced "SPACE!!" B-plot.
@thefuppits3 жыл бұрын
This is also why he didn't want anything to do with Deep Sh*t 9, he knew they would infuse it with exactly the kind of soapy internal conflict he tried so hard to avoid in his creation. He was wrong with "Family" though. That episode, was so Star Trek in it's context, it killed. It's really part of a 3 part episode, where in that light, it really brought the seriousness of searching for new worlds and civilizations, home, literally. "Family" was perhaps one of STs most significant episodes in making Star Trek "real".

@@patsk8872 We're full of hate? Lol! Not all, fanboy. We're full of good taste, and recognize a fugazzi when we see it. You, on the other hand, can't tell the difference between haters, and those who won't suck up the slop because, it's slop. Slop, by any other name, Patsy, is still slop. And no, *most* classic Trek fans are not necessarily fans of DS9, as an overall series. Fwiw, there are some *fantastically classic* DS9 episodes, just not enough to make it overcome Deep Sh*t 9 disease. What's Deep Sh*t 9 disease? It's the disease Deep Sh*t 9 suffered from in the form of the writing staff who couldn't wait for Gene to be totally out of picture, so they could bring their Star Wars and Babylon 5 slop into Star Trek. This is similar to the CBS writers bringing in Game of Thrones in Space into CBS Trek. Only with CBS Trek, it's about writers with flat out disdain for classic Trek, spinning up the slop machine. So, like many fanboys, you simply cannot stand when someone calls out your clown-faced acceptance of diseased slop. And, calls out fanboy insistence on ingesting that slop. Then takes issue with fanboys for not being able to admit CBS Trek, along with a lot of Deep Sh*t 9, is patently not, Star Trek in any way shape or form, other than in names and pilfered, denatured lore. But, hate? There appears to be hate alright, but it's all you Patsy! Cheers!

Data seems unfazed at the end. But is he? It is exactly what he longs for most, to be more human. Is this the first time Data has failed at something? Then he is just a bit more human for having failed. Defectum semper est optio. But for Data? The episode should have been more like "Data'a Day" and focused more on him.

As much as I like Data I think the writers play him for comedy too much. With his ability to absorb and process information he could easily become an expert on human interactions instead of pretending to be angry and saying, "You're not my mother!" which is absurd. I hope you're going to watch the DS9 series, I think it's the ultimate spin-off Trek series. It has characters I genuinely care about, they have depth and they don't all get along. Much more realistic than TNG. And the plots tend to go into areas this show avoids such as religion and war. Plus they're mostly stationary near a planet so there's more range of adventures.
