The Who's performance at Tanglewood took place on July 7, 1970. Tanglewood is an outdoor music venue located in Lenox, Massachusetts, primarily known for hosting classical music performances. In 1970, Tanglewood hosted a number of rock and pop acts, including Chicago and Jethro Tull.
The Who performed in support of their rock opera album "Tommy." At this point, "Tommy" had become a landmark album, and the band was gaining international recognition.
The concert attracted a record-breaking crowd of around 15,000 people.

Moon’s drumming is so unique. Where any other drummer would be syncing his downbeats with Townshend’s chords, Keith is doing these premature fills that adds so much excitement and tension to the music. The craziest combination of musicians.

I really like the TOMMY album, but I agree that from that 1969-70 period, they absolutely went to another level - and then some - on-stage. Around that period they were untouchable as a live group.

The creative chord structure stuff that Townshend is playing is not easy to write nor is it easy to play live and play perfectly...he doesn't make many mistakes...and his time is near perfect....excellent guitar player...I don't care about shredding...

My favorite old clip is a Quick One from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. Watching and listening to Keith Moon makes you realize what an integral part he played with the band. Sad fate for him, but a terrific musician.

That's a great one, actually the first time I heard A Quick One was watching the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, back when it was released in the '90s. So for me that's the standard. Haven't found a better performance of A Quick One yet!

I liked Tommy, but Quadrophenia (and the tune, Naked Eye) is what turned me into a Who fan. In '75, I turned 18 years old, graduated HS, and could buy beer. I saw Jaws and the Frampton "Comes Alive" tour in the summer, but the highlight of the year was seeing The Who with Mooney in November. Great year! I saw the Tommy tour twice in '89 and saw them once again in the early 2000s, before John passed. The best live concert I've seen.

I am a huge Who fan! I have seen them for the first time on their first USA tour back in 1967. Have seen them probably about 10 times since. Always a great show.

An utterly epic performance of a song so beautifully suited to their talents, especially on stage. I don't think these guys EVER got tired of playing Amazing Journey/Sparks.

I was in high school in Ames Iowa and saw The Who back in about 1981 on their first Last World Tour - I had nose bleed seats inside an enclosed coliseum. I was up so close to the rafters, if I stood up, I could touch the rafter with my head. They were notoriously loud, and so the music up their got turned into noise for me. So I saw them, didn't exactly hear them. I only recognized one song - Baba O'Reilly. Still though, I don't regret going. And of course, my ears were ringing for days afterwards.

1970 was a great summer for these concerts. Besides Chicago’s set also check out Santana’s Soul Sacrifice. Awesome when your not messed up on acid. Worth the trip.😅

The live Who were so much better than on the recordings. The last time I saw this part of the concert, I was there. I was there in 1969 too and met Roger who couldn't have been nicer to our little group who bugged him with questions for ten minutes.

Tanglewood all around was a good show for the band. This in particular is killer..like usual. In my opinion the best live version of this is at the London coliseum in 1969. The visual part of the recording isn't as good but how they play this... Holy crap. Long live The Who!!!!

He wore that because he could easily hide the knee pads he used to wear. Live at leads by far the best live album they did and one of if not the best of all time considering when they did it and just one guitarist, bass. Drummer and singer. Rock and roll circus, A quick one, one of their best.

Not to be cruel or break any comment rules but.... this performance makes Zeppelin look a bit like kids at a battle of the bands competition rehearsing to back the school production of the Hobbit

Thanks for the suggestion, Terri! We view this channel as celebrating the careers of these bands, and we like to find performances that maybe aren’t already covered by other channels. Also they tend to bring suggestions, like yours, which helps us find true gems - and possibly cover those in the future. Appreciate it - G
