Don't feel guilty. This is a Polish Comedy Show from the late 90's, and we were laughing at this. For context: the sister character of the guy pretending to be Hitler is preparing for her High school certificate exam and this is how he and his fellow policemen are helping her.

Poles are like that. We tend to make fun of difficult or sad situtations. And we do it all the time. Our Ntional Football Team sucks? We get angry, but minutes after that we make fun of it ;)

There was a moment when Hitler said that he was a "Malarz pokojowy" 3:33 That is, "house painter" in English, and the translation in the subtitle in the film is "peacfull painter". "POKÓJ" in Polish has several meanings depending on the context. It can be "ROOM" or "PEACE" 😁✌. There was a play on words and it was not explained for non-Polish speakers.

Dont worry, its just a dark humor, 20% of polish citizen died in ww2, and its big loss, but all we have now to copium with all bad things is comedy, same with all bad things, we dont like it, but at least we have humor to get over it, ww2, other big wars, comunist time in PL slavery in USA and world etc, we as people still have bad things happening, humor is good thing to overthrow it

Thank you so much for respecting our country and our history so much. Thats really heartwarming and touching for me. Thats one of my biggest dreams to see us, Poles, respect our history that much. Unfortunally we were trained for generations to see our country and our history as something shameful which is so sad!!!! Again - Thank you ❤

How were we trained to see our country as something shameful? 😮 There is a bit of inferiority complex because of all the time when we were occupied and others were looking down on us, and the country was also very poor after the communism. But it's not the same as being ashamed of the country or history itself.

6:37 Noo, there's no reason anyone should NOT laugh at it and you shouldn't feel guilty about it. To be honest, laughing at our enemies and oppressors, making fun of them is a part of Polish culture. It was some way to make miserable life under adversary's boot a little bit better? lighter? more tolerable? Laughing at those delicate themes was meant to give our people more hope and strength. And also it was some kind of fighting with the enemy. For example, Polish caricatures from the times of the Partitions or WWII (that were representing our oppressors in comical way) are considered quite important part of our art and history in general. And that's exactly what the scene above is, a caricature. It doesn't mean we don't have any respect for the tragedies of those times, but it should be known that laughing at it has much more depth for Polish people and it isn't just simple joking.

3:33 this joke needs an explenation In polish language "room" and "peace" is literaly the same word. So When he said " I'm a peacefull painter!" In polish it was more like "I'm a room(indoor) painter!" with wordplay.
