Thank you very much to several folks who have pointed out that the jerky film effect was not achieved through frame removal. It was actually filmed slow, and then the film was sped up to achieve this effect - reverse slow motion, essentially. This is one film trick I haven't come across before, and it's very cool - not to mention absolutely perfect for this video.

Thank you for another great reaction! If you want to hear Geoff’s lowest note, in a video, I recommend VoicePlay’s version of the Halo theme. Layne (the beatboxer) did that arrangement and he often makes Geoff go lower than his comfort range. Geoff and Layne usually take turns in making the arrangements for VoicePlay. In Halo Geoff sings a B0 (layered with a B1 so some people miss it) which is quite extreme. I’ve heard other people sing subharmonics that low, but Geoff’s smoothness in his voice feels like velvet to my ears. I simply can’t get enough of his voice. And to see reactors be blown away by his extreme talent makes me happy.

"How big is this man's range?"... Welcome to Geoff. He recently passed the mark of 5 full octaves, and he prefers to say he is a baritone. Since the holiday season is coming up, I believe he has a few of his spoken word readings for Christmas, to hear his day to day voice.

I really enjoyed your reaction. Geoff has a 5 octave range and not only the low notes but also the high notes sound very nice. I think he sings the most beautifully in the song Shenandoah, the tenor line is insane. If you would like to see a performance of his where he does not use subharmonics at all, I recommend Sixteen Tons. In this, he goes amazingly deep with a clear chest voice. I also recommend that you watch the video "How to sing really low". In it, he presents his techniques. He also performs the poem The Raven really beautifully.

Geoff had to film this one twice. Originally, the makeup was scarier on the monsters, and they started seated on the ground instead of stools. Absolutely fantastic analysis! I honestly hope you'll continue; there are only a handful of other reactors out there who break down the music with such detail, and it's invaluable. I've listened to this song quite a lot since it came out a year ago, as well as listening to any analysis, breakdown or reaction to it that I can find. Today, you pointed out something I've never heard before- that Fur Elise swing piano during Dracula's bit. Fantastic! By the way, I know it's been mentioned that Geoff utilized the Picardy Third in God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen- but you have to hear *how* he does it. Somehow the man managed to take a repetitive old carol and turn it into something with drive, that is simultaneously darker and more joyful than the original take. It's astounding. One thing I noticed you picking up on in this that you'll find universal in Geoff's arrangements is that he never repeats himself. Verse to verse, chorus to chorus, he's constantly switching up the delivery, the tempo, the harmonies- it's never static, and it keeps the listener engaged throughout. I still haven't managed the trick of telling Geoff's arrangements from Layne's in VoicePlay's music (they split the work approximately 50/50), but with your ear and knowledge of theory, it won't surprise me if you suss it out. If you do, can you explain what their 'tells' are? Both of them are geniuses in their own right, and performing together for so long and being such a cohesive rhythm unit for the group, their arrangements definitely have similarities. But no matter if it's Layne or Geoff, you can always tell a VoicePlay arrangement. No one else sounds like they do.

Yeah, Geoff was my favorite to begin with, and still is, but once you have done a few VoicePlay videos, you will discover just what phenomenally talented singers all of the members are. Eli has an insane range also, plus great ability to sing both astounding legato runs and switch to a rock tenor rasp in the flick of an eyelash. Layne is an insanely inventive beatboxer, but also possesses a beautiful baritone that is a joy to listen to. Cesar, their newest member, also posesses a hefty range and is capable of insane theatrical accentuations. Oogie Boogie's Song was a VoicePlay video. Geoff is very much the center spotlight in that one, and it ends with him doing lines that go from a very high note down to an E1 that is achieved by subharmonics, and it left so many reviewers just sitting their with their mouths open, and then running to their keyboards to figure out exactly what note it was, and many additionally commenting: That is the lowest sound I have ever heard come out of a human being. I have heard about Nightmare Before Christmas, but I've never watched it. If you want do to Oogie Boogie, the clip from the original movie is available online on youtube, and you can watch that before hand if you want to see not only the main vocal being switched from low baritone to bass but how ingenious Layne's arrangement was when you watch VP's version. If you want, let me know if you need the link to the movie version of the song if you can't find it yourself. I stumbled upon VoicePlay about 9 months ago when I was looking for different versions of Eleanor Rigby. I had no experience listening to modern Accapella music, and thought Voice Play was referring to a technique, not to an actual group. I was immediately struck by their brilliance and especially intrigued by Geoff's voice and kept looking at more and more videos and within a week, was a Patron for Geoff, VoicePlay and PattyCake Productions (the last run by VoicePlay beat-boxer Layne Stein and former VoicePlay member Tony Wakim, the set for Monster Mash is one of the standing sets at PattyCake Productions.) I had never before been even tempted to join anyone's Patreon, but this group of guys are insanely talented and deserve all the support they can get. Particularly because they do everything-arranging, directing, camerawork, lighting, building sets and props, etc. I always love coming across new reactors who have some music and/or theatrical experience who can confirm that there is something extraordinary about them, even if I myself can't articulate in musical terms what it is that makes them so stupendous for me. The Big Three in Accapella are generally considered Home Free, Pentatonix and VoicePlay. Maybe it's just because I discovered them first, but VP remains my favorite, due in no small part not only to their amazing vocal prowess, but also to their inventiveness, humor, and theatricality. A lot of their members started their careers performing at the themeparks (Disney World, Universal, etc) that surround them (they all live in the Orlando, Florida area in the US). (He was briefly one of the "Dapper Dans", the Disneyworld barber shop group, and you definitely will hear barbershop harmonizations crop up in his arrrangements). It still astounds me that some people either dislike or outright hate VoicePlay's tendency towards theatricality and humor, but to each his own, I guess. (But, don't worry, you will definitely run across some videos that are performed very simply and movingly.)
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Totally understood on all counts. I think as I get into them, I'll discover them all in turn. Spoiler: my next video is more focused on Eli's voice. I've had a lot of recommendations for Oogie Boogie, so may well look at that very soon. Love all the other info you've provided here - thank you. And are you saying Geoff was a Dapper Dan? The hole that is Geoff Castellucci and Voiceplay should be considered a black hole. Once you get in, it's almost impossible to come out. Not that you'd want to. If you want his biggest range, look at Voiceplay's Oogie Boogie (as mentioned by others) and the Little Mermaid Medley. For Geoff by himself, look at Headless Horseman (great Halloween themed video with high production, it's all him including the heads), Blackbird (yes the Beatles song), Take Me Home Country Roads and Way Down (also mentioned earlier). Geoff is so good that he doesn't use all his range in every song. He loves to push himself to not use his sub harmonics to blow you away every time. Sometimes he just wants to sing a song arranged in a way he finds interesting. I've seen vocal coaches reactions for a few years now and I don't think anyone has definitively said what his range is, although it's pretty well documented it's 5+ octaves. The thing that blows everyone away is how clear he is on the low and the high. The other thing I'm really getting to appreciate more is how well his bass tones work with Voiceplay's beatboxer (and fellow arranger) Laine Stein. The Voiceplay vids that don't feature Geoff down low, still show his and Laine's incredible work to provide the "foundation" for all the other singers and guests in the Voiceplay songs. Have fun David.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Definitely don't want to - I'm loving it in this particular black hole! ;-) I absolutely adore that Geoff limits himself - I have so much respect for him for that, as I've heard other musicians that use their gimmick so much that it stops being interesting. He's definitely adding a special tone to his voice for this song. The voice is a bit Thurl inspired, I think. A bass Geoff really looks up to. He didnt remove frames, what he did was record it at 75% speed, and then play it at 100% speed in the video.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
That completely make sense - Ravenscroft is a very logical and understandable inspiration. And thank you - I didn't appreciate that would be the upshot of recording that way. (I feel like there's a lot of info out there about recording fast and playing slow, but not so much the other way round, as far as I'm aware.)
@huldradraco2 жыл бұрын
@@davidkreacts they also record the other way around, sped up filming and then slowed down for slow motion effect (used in their version of "we don't talk about Bruno" for instance). but yeah, here he did it at slow speed to get the jerky effect (they've done it with VP in "grim grinning ghosts" as well), and he jokingly has said that's why it looked like he was somewhat decent at dancing, because it's going so slowly 😄😄 they are very skilled video producers, all learned by trial and error and watching online tutorials over the years, and do most of it themselves. since they can't be behind a steadycam while also being in front of the camera performing, they have a cameraman for that, and they have a makeup artist if they need advanced makeup, but everything else is done by the members of VoicePlay. and everything involving the music, except for the final audio mixing, is also done by them. which makes their work genuinely theirs from top to bottom, from start to finish. a true work of art both in both audio and video. and that makes them stand apart from many other a cappella groups, they have no labels to answer to and are anything but mainstream. they take risks few others would dare take, and their personality and creativity really shines in their work ❤❤

He also used Bach's Toccatta & Fugue in D Minor albeit taken apart & mixed up at the start. From memory Geoff has around a 5 octave range, hmm a couple of his solo song vids that help showcase it are Blackbird and The Headless Horseman, one of his Voiceplay vids for that would be the Oogie Boogie Song.

At this point, I think he has a full 5 octave range and he can sing smoothly over all of it. To steal a quote from one of George R. R. Martin's books; "His voice was like honey poured over thunder."

It’s so cool you noticed the Thurl Ravenscroftiness (?) here. I’ve read that Geoff mentioned him as one of his influences, and on some of his Halloween videos you can really hear it. Peter Barber uses the term “overdarkening.” What’s fun is that there’s a whole new crew of young basses coming up, and when you see them talk about THEIR inspirations, Geoff’s name always comes up (Along with Avi Kaplan-you do need to check him out-start with Change on the Rise). Just wait until you see the characters in Way Down. 😁

I remember a comment on another reactor who asked about range, the comment was simply "Infinity." If you want to hear more about vocal theory regarding Geoff, check out the Charismatic Voice, a professional opera singer who does a ton of Geoff and VoicePlay reactions, as well as an interview with Geoff. But then again, VoicePlay and Geoff is a go to for reactors who are also professional singers and vocal coaches. I love the subtle character tics in the chorography, such as Wolfman Geoff scratching his neck. In the solo videos I have seen, this is Geoff's most elaborate dancing chorography. But check out VoicePlay's Queen in 5 minutes video for some nice group chorography. Or their recent Hall of the Mountain King video. Having a keyboard nearby for future reactions might come in for future reactions. Geoff has a few instructional videos on his channel. I believe the characters, from left to right are Dr. Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein's Monster. Really enjoy your reaction, and will look forward to more reactions.

Keep them coming! You really cant go wrong with Geoff or Voiceplay. They always bring their best to the table. Oogie Boogie shows off his range. Hoist the Colours, My Mother Told Me, Dragonborn Come, Way Down, Far Over the Misty Mountains and Halo all showcase his depth. Carry On My Wayward Son and Dream On makes him on of the great bass guitars ever. Enjoy!

Lovely reaction. Geoff and VoicePlay are very keen on Halloween, and do something every year. Yes, Geoff does almost everything.. He blows me away, and I'm sure you feel the same. He gives credit to make up and "beard wrangling" and plugins he uses. And his range is enormous, around 5 octaves. His lowest note to date is the low low C1. He said at that time that he can do D1 quite wel, even C#1, but C1 had him trying 80 tiimes to make it sound smooth. That was achieved in his Way Down. You will be amazed. LOL His speaking voice is low. You can hear him on videos he's made on how to sing low, or very low. Geoff has said “Did you pick up on the "la la la" section? It's Bach's toccata and fugue in d minor, just shuffled and swung”. At the end, as you say, there is a hint of Fur Elise. He does little dances in a few things. and another patron has made a video of some of them. With all of his videos it's fair to say that they need to be watched a number of times to catch everything going on. I agree, enunciation is very important to me and he never fails. And his arrnagements are never less than outstanding. Incidentally he loves five part harmonies. so in VoicePlay arrnagemts they bring in a fifth member as guest as they are down to four currently. I love his harmonies. And also Laine's - they do most of Voiecplay's arrangements between them.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all the info! I definitely agree that these are more than one-listen analyses - I considered going into even more detail, but then I could make my videos 90 minutes long trying to catch every detail and that’s excessive! ;-) I did wonder about doing a “here’s things I missed” video at some point…

@barbarabishop93622 жыл бұрын
In addition to watching the video at least to the Patreon credits, I'd suggest you turn on the Closed Caption. Not so much so you can follow the lyrics (their diction is always so good you don't really need the help) but because they sometimes imbed humor in the CC lines. They aren't computer-generated, some human is in full command of them. So... I adore VoicePlay in almost every single thing in their catalog I've listened to (and it's LOTS), but you might also want to check out some Pentatonix, and Home Free. These three groups are at the top of most people's lists of a capella groups. I'm not as much of a country fan so I don't take in quite as much Home Free, but all three groups are 100% talent, every single member. If you get into PTX (Pentatonix) be aware that in their more than 10 years together (their "Sing-Off" performances are from 2011) they've only had a single membership change, when Avi, their bass, left and helped them find Matt to carry on. Some reactors get a little bewildered because two of the members, Mitch and Kirstie (one of the very few a capella female singers outside of choir groups like Voctave), change their looks constantly. Mitch is ... something special. He has one of those "once in a generation" voices. VoicePlay ... you're going to love them. A great many of their more recent pieces are full costume and character acting, but not all. And much of their older stuff (but not all) is just singing (but WHAT SINGING!) How you roll is up to you, but I assure you that you're going to enjoy exploring.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the comments. I've been loving my explorations so far, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Wicked and Monster Mash are your introductions to Voice Play and Geoff, huh? Poor guy. LOL. I say that with a ( pardon the pun ) wicked sense of humor attached as there IS no way to softball someone into either Voice Play or Geoff's music. However, you have absolutely started with the right and proper group for your first toe dipping into the world of acapella reacting, given your background in musical theater. Welcome to the "Theater Kids" of acapella! Don't look at me, *I* didn't coin the phrase, THEY did. But, of the trifecta of "big names" in acapella, each of which have their own niche carved out within the overall fandom, you could not possibly have started in a better place. When I first saw your video my first thought was " I'm not about to sit through a half hour reaction. There's no way. " Then I started watching. I had so much fun witnessing my own amazement reflected back at me from my own first time hearing VP that I couldn't click away! My Gods this was so much fun to watch. So, if you're wondering if you should continue on with reactions, the answer, if one were to ask me, is: Yes, please!

I'm looking forward to those, but finishing up a very long audiobook first - otherwise I'll never get back to it! ;-) I caught one of Kathy's twitches, but seeing more now I watch it back.

Love this reaction. Geoff and his wife worked at Disney so theatrics has become a necessary component. Also to gain greater entertainment/information, be sure to TURN ON CLOSED CAPTION! Geoff also reads poems and stories (The Raven, Tell Tale Heart, etc.). He has interviewed with Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice to hear his 'regular' voice.

Thanks for the info. I've had a few tips about CC, but unfortunately not until I'd recorded a few more videos - I will be doing that going forwards, but it won't be seen on the channel for a couple of weeks.

The ballistic quality of the Geoffettes is done by filming slower then speeding up. :)
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
A technique I had not thought of - it's hard to avoid filming fast and going into slow motion, but it hadn't occurred to me what the reverse would look like.

For his full range I recommend Blackbird. High and Dry. Ain't No Sunshine. Ghost Riders In The Sky. Saddle Up.

Thank you - I will get to those for sure.

Notice that the choreography of the dance moves the 3 Geoffs do during the chorus keep getting more complicated. They are representing 4 of the most famous movie monsters - Frankenstein's monster (arms outstretched), Wolfman (hands clawing and slashing), Dracula (holding his cape and bowing) and the Mummy (wrapped in bandages). Geoff took every opportunity to practice the dance in preparation for the video, and there are apparently some pretty humorous videos of him doing it at odd places and times in the run-up to the filming. To hear Geoff's range, I would recommend Blackbird on Geoff's channel, or Oogie Boogie's Song from VoicePlay.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Ooh - I must look those videos up! I can imagine that being very humourous. :-D Thanks for the recommendations - Oogie Boogie is already in the production line, and gradually working my way through the huge portfolio here!

@@davidkreacts Patrons at a fairly low level tier are treated to MP3s, karaoke tracks, and often a behind-the-scenes video. There is a funny clip of him grilling their dinner and practicing the dance moves at the same time with a spatula in his hand.

Late to the party but mentioning things other reactors miss, yes I think this channel has potential. Good luck. Be sure to check out some of Layne's arrangements, like Carry on Waywrd Son or their most recent Halloween song Hide and Seek. (Or True Colors, where he doesn't beatbox, or Greatest Showman, where as ringmaster he makes everbody else beatbox, or... sorry, I'll stop.)

Thank you so much! I appreciate it. Also, no need to stop - but I will say that my to-do list is VERY long now! (There is an Oogie Boogie reaction dropping next week though, which is a Layne arrangement if I recall correctly.)

@@davidkreacts Too bad, EVERY reactor has an episode on Oogie Boogie - you did well by starting with Wicked.

I think the best choreography VoicePlay does, is probably in Boy Bands in 5 Minutes. Way Down has Elvis moves (and is very worth watching, but mostly for other reasons). Dream On has some chreo as well. Enemy features good choreo, but it's mostly the featured guest artist. Queen in 5 Minutes has limited choreo, and there's Zombies vs Hillbillies, I guess, and the Chicken Song... Phantom has... not so much choreo as blocking. Does the stuff they do in Rich Man count as choreo? On the whole, choreo isn't usually VoicePlay's thing, though they _can_ do it, when it seems appropriate or whatever. Geoff's known range runs from A0 (C1 singing lyrics) up to A5. To my knowledge, the only video (other than third-party "vocal range" compilations) that spans this entire range, is one of his instructional how-to-sing-low-notes videos; however, Blackbird will give you a pretty decent sample of it.
@davidkreacts2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I shall be interested to see what else they do - but I also definitely agree with going heavy on the choreo only when it's appropriate. I haven't seen the Boy Bands video yet, but that's extremely logical as their peak choreo moment. I will get to Blackbird at some point - just trying to figure out how to prioritise a very, very long list! Trying to imagine what a vocalised A0 even sounds like... I'll have to watch that, for sure.
