I think its because of the way they portray updates as in universe things, so saying "we added new animals" would sound weird. Like for farming they said it like "nook miles now offers cooking lessons" and leif just sells crops now. So it's not like those are additions to the universe, they are just things we have never done before as the devs portray it

hey there I’m a queer woman and a lot of my twitch community is lgbtqia+ and we were all excited you could have villagers live together bc a lot players ship them together and there are a lot of head canons about villagers being gay, trans, ace, etc. so having a way to play with that in animal crossing now is exciting! there’s also a running lgbt+ community joke about saying you’re roommates is code for being gay, which is what I was referencing.
