Until 1999, it was mandatory for each country to participate in its official language (with some exceptions in some years, mainly in the 60s and 70s). Greece in 1999 and 2000 didn't have the right to participate in the contest due to the 20th place we had ranked in 1998. (At that time, there were no semi-finals and qualifying for the final was done with different rules). So in 2001, when we had the right to return to the contest, we made use of the right to send a song in English for the first time. And since it went well with Antique, we tried it again in the following years.

Helena, Anna and Sakis didnt compete. They were directly selection of the National Broadcaster and the audience picked the song via televoting

In 2004, they organized a competition called Eurostar, where the winner would represent Greece with a song written by Nikos Terzis (the composer of Die for You). However, when Sakis expressed interest in representing Greece, ERT decided to change its plans. They canceled the final of the show (which already had a winner called Apostolis Psichramis), and Sakis ultimately went with a song written by the composer (Shake It). In 2005, 2006, and 2009 (Helena, Anna, and Sakis), the artist was directly selected, and the songs were chosen. In 2017, the composer (Dimitris Kontopoulos who wrote This Our Night) was directly selected, and he chose the singer (Demy), while again, only the songs were selected afterward.

At 5:28, you feature Sofia Vosou, and as someone from Greece, I have to say this was one of the strongest performances our country has ever delivered. The song, titled "Anoixi," which means "Spring," is such a timeless piece. I would absolutely love to see you do a full review of her Eurovision 1991 entry-an incredible song from a time when the competition truly had a touch of quality. Eurovision is a song contest, it is the song that is competing. There's been years where a country has a song and they form a group just for the competition. In 2024 Azerbaijan had the winner and the front runner sing together.
