Another thing you have to remember with the "feeling nothing towards the enemy" part is the fact that the Soviet Union invaded Finland. They invaded his homeland and he defended it, so in turn that most likely lessened his feelings towards the enemy, thinking of them as the enemy and as invades of his homeland, and less of humans or men

You're right about the peripheral vision aspect of Mr. Häyhä's technique, on almost every assignment, he was shooting without a spotter. The situational awareness was entirely dependent on his sight and hearing. In the phases it was for him a turkey shoot, he was far more distant from the enemy (brother ruski by now) than the mobile ski troops. But isn't a turkey shoot what every skilled sniper who lays his ambush right gets in the end of the day?

Thanks for reacting! And greetings from Finland🇫🇮 Thanks to many heroes, skillful people and God, Finland retained her independence in the two wars against Soviet Union in 1939-1944. That is a miracle. Look at the map! Soviet Union had multiple times more men and war machinery, it should have been an easy conquest. In the Winter War (Häyhä’s war) 32 tanks aganst 3000. 114 planes against 3800. Bravery and wit saved us.

@@jamesbrackett1302 that is precisely the so-called national attitude. We just want to exist and live in peace, minding our own business, enjoying our own nature and our land, farming, foraging, hunting, building - all of the wars we've been part of have been thrust upon us, by a larger, outnumbering power, from the times when Finnish farmer-peasant troops were levied by Sweden to our times under Russian rule, we didn't need them nor did we care, honestly. Not until 1939 and the Winter War, and then the Continuation War, where Finnish aggression only wanted to reclaim ceded Karelian territories and stop there. This is not only national, it's personal and civilian attitudes as well: Keep your cards close to your chest, don't make a scene in public (unless hammered), small talk is unnecessary, mind your business and we don't mind you, that's very Finnish. 😅 Loud, obnoxious people need not apply. Humility, duty and personal space are virtues.

oh, and also he preferred crouch instead of laying on his belly because he was better to aim on that position, and he was only a littlebit more than 5 feet long so he wasnt worried about being too tall in that position at least when making snow barrier/foxhole :) and yes, 505 confirmed kills on his rifle without scope + 200 confirmed kills on Suomi m-31 SMG :) the count started after he killed about 40 kills in few days. so there is AT LEAST 700 kills confirmed but it is more likely even more!

My grandfather had that kind of eyesight. Unbelievable how accurate he was with nothing but iron sights. He scorned scopes, which were useless in the forested wilderness where he hunted. I have heard stats quoted (couldn’t find the quote in a browser search) that say a soldier averages several thousand rounds per kills while a sniper averages 1.35.

I've been watching your nerdcore reactions for a long while now, I was surprised to see this one as a Finn myself! One tactic that the video didn't touch was that he poured water on the snow front of him, so it would freeze and wouldn't reveal his position when firing. There's a famous (almost certainly apocryphal) quote from Simo Häyhä when asked what he felt killing the soviets. His response was "the recoil".

Qxir, Oversimplified, Simple History and The History Guy - History that deserves to be remembered are all interesting channels I follow, The History Guy being the most formal in presentation and the only one of these showing his face, Qxir being a sarcastic Irishman just talking about whatever piques his interest, Simple History falling a bit closer to the formal presentation side but not quite as much, and Oversimplified being cartoon-conveyed series with plenty of jokes, no real presenter.

If I'm remembering right they also left some stuff out of this video. Like how he would pack the snow down in front of his rifle or wet it so it would freeze over that way every time he shot the snow wouldn't fly up into the air giving away his position. He also rarely laid on his stomach preferring to fire from a kneeling/sitting position because he felt it help increases accuracy (Edited to fix a spelling mistake)

Stone-cold, maybe. But a proper hunter does try to kill his prey fast so the animal doesn't have to suffer and is easier to retrieve. A good hit to the heart-lung area and even a big moose is down in very little time and doesn't manage to run very far. He did the same for his poor opponents in the war. A good hit to the chest and they won't have to suffer for long or run off very far.

They put the number of hits between 505-542, but he did not kill that many people. They attribute to him around 800 more victims with machine guns and grenades. If only half of them are his credit, he still killed nearly 1000 enemy soldiers in 3 months. However, there is no data on that that he would have fought in the second Finno-Soviet war, his wound probably prevented him

Thank you for this! 505 confirmed kills but most likely there are more. Plus the kills with Suomi Konepistooli - the Finnish SMG it is estimated that total kills were like over 800. Simo and 30 other Finnish soldiers held 4000 Russians back through the whole Winter War. He was not a "soldier" and he did not take part of the continuation war cause he wanted only to defend his country and not attack against Russia with Germans. His videos have lyrics on screen, images during solos, and full accurate descriptions of what the songs are about. I’d also recommend you check out some of their more sad songs; some are legitimately heart rending. Besides that, you’re one of the few react youtubers I enjoy. You approach things so genuinely, it doesn’t seem faked. Even things you don’t understand, you put forth the effort to try and decipher. And you’re very eloquent with your words/explanations.

Hey Dave, like your take on things, exc.on the white death perspective,I've grown up in a hunting culture, and REAL hunters aren't bloodthirsty unfeeling automatons,(never said you even thought of inferring that by the way)true hunters or sportsmen don't desire to cause pain or suffering to their targets anymore than any other natural predator. I won't go into the ethics of hunting, that's not the platform.sometimes though it comes from need.everyone can't afford the convenience of a local grocier.poor people gotta eat too. That being said. Our boy's reason for feeling nothing over 505 kills.....they threatened his home....his people ...his country ...his existence..... for nothing more than avarice ,greed, power ,dominion and if I may be so bold...evil. Rest in Peace is the only thing I have to say to Him. He set an example anyone could have been proud of.If you research a little more you'll find He followed a long life of peace afterwards.Killer NO...Defender.yes yes yes.l

this dosent talk about the 200 or so kills he got with a machinegun and because of him.being a hunter he saw the soviets as just hunting targets instead of human beings which is what might stop ptsd from developing

If you think that is crazy. you should lookup the statistics of the Finnish winter war. The Finns basically whopped the russians ass. altough outnumbered

Francis did have the most kills as a sniper. Until Simo got the chance to fight. However, Simo never did surpass Francis in kills with a rifle. Although he would have, the Winter War was not suited for snipers. The densely packed snow covered forest forced Simo to make 60% of his kills with his machine gun. And the war didn't last long enough to Simo to get more. Also, like Francis before him, Simo chose not to use scopes as the light reflecting off it could give away his position.

I'm sorry but you are mistaken. As ""Francis" most likely you are referring to Francis Pegahmagabow. He had 378 confirmed kills as sniper while Simo had 505. Those are ONLY the kills he had as sniper. It is estimated that he had another 250-500 using his submachinegun. As for the snow covered terrain you mention, you forget the huge number of Russians in the area. Francis was also awesome though. ,🤘

@@user-gp6dd1uj4r Well, snipers say they'd never be stupid enough to willing use their rifles for such short distance targets for more than a few kills. And especially not if there's more than 5 of them. and Historians say Simo had just over 500 kills total with most of then with a short ranged submachine gun. You claim pretty much contradicts them.
